How much for a 86 z28 w/406 SBC

Allright guys tell me what you think i could get for my car, im looking into getting a 97-02 Ws6 or SS.

Engine: 400 block bored .30 over, Keith black .30cc dish pistons, federal mogul moly rings, 69 350 heads 64 cc w/ 1.94 intake valves and 1.50 exhaust valve, comp cams extreme energy 268 grind (.477//480 lift, hedman headers, hedman y pipe, flowmaster american thunder 3 inch exhaust, Eagle racing SIR 5.7 rods, 1.5 steel rocker arms, comp cams valve springs, accell ignition

Transmission: Rebuilt TH-350 with B&M shift kit, B&M Holeshot 2500 stall converter

Car: 86 z28 originally a 5 speed still has all pedals in it and i have all parts to change back over to a 5 speed, it has 92 rims, 92 high rise spoiler, and 92 front ground effect and grill, White face gauges, Autometer 5 inch phantom tach with shift light, phantom oil press guage and water temp. All new switches inside, GM keyless entry system. I also have a 2000 WS6 rear end with disk brakes that goes with the car.. not installed.

How much do you think i can get out of her..... the motor and transmission only have 500 miles on them right now, i just finished the car sunday afternoon.

Re: How much for a 86 z28 w/406 SBC

What's it's worth, and what you'll get are two different things really...
You live in Ohio the same as I do, so I don't see anyone offering you more than $3,000 if I'm being honest. This is regardless of the money spent in the motor.
People will see it's not original...a lot of people shy away from modified vehicles. When body panels aren't original, people automatically assume it's been in an accident. Also, your car is 17 years old like mine. Third it's a Z28, which doesn't really command a higher price. Lastly, the car market isn't doing well....people are losing jobs or are slow on work, and wan't to hang onto their money for now.
I don't want you get the feeling I'm knocking your car...I'm not. I appreciate it myself, just the same as you do- but not everyone understand cars like you and I. You have nothing to lose by putting it for sale and seeing what people will offer though.

Hey did you go to Norwalk High school? I use to be in Norwalk all the time through the summers over the last couple years. I made some friends too.....do you remember Melissa Lang? She was a Truckerette and all that stuff. She'd be a grade older than you I think....

Well it looks like i will be hanging on to her for awhile then im just getting sick of all the stupid maintnance tht has to be done to these cars... header gaskets, collector gaskets, vaccume lines falling off, breaking t5s, breaking pushrods in the old motor, and and on.. i just really want something i can drive and not worry about at all.

I understand where you coming from man. I bought my '86 IROC-Z as a project for $700. Straight body no rust, near mint interior, terrible paint, fenders & hood were replaced with bad peices due to minor collision, & lastly the car would not run right.
I've been driving the car for over a year and a half fixing what I could afford as time has come and gone. $6,000 later, it's now near completion of a factory restoration....I'll be getting it back in hopefully 2 more weeks from the body shop. If I were to sell my car right now, I'd be lucky to get $4,000 for it.

Norwalk raceway sounds cool....I just don't know when the next time I'll be up there, since my parents are selling their place in Port Clinton. I went to the Church of Christ in Norwalk (Rt. 250), which is how I met a lot of people.....so that's usually when I was in Norwalk. Let's see...I've been to Subby's, That video store across from Bob Evans, Shoney's, and the Factory outlet strip mall there. Norwalk if pretty nice actually. In fact, I've been in the parking lot of the Chevy dealership there in Norwalk (which is probably the one you work at, right?). Anyhow, small work eh?

Here's a picture of my first *mint* 1986 IROC-Z...had it three weeks and totaled it back in 1999. Anyhow, my current IROC-Z will look identicle to this when I get it back....

Geez, I guess what else would I expect from a 16 year old kid with a car like that. I am half way surprised it took you 3 weeks to wreck it, most kids would have trashed it in a week.

(And the number one reason kids should not own nice/rare/realitivly powerful thirdgens/cars is.... )

I actually take care of my things...this car was obviously on top of my list, being that I hardly drove it the three weeks I had it.
The car had some brake work done to it by the dealer before I bought it, due to a colapse of the passenger side brake line...all was done in good faith before the keys were handed to me.
Anyhow, September 9th 1999 I took 2 of my friends to go see a drive in movie- we never got that far. At a two-way intersection the brake pedal went "soft"...like it had once before while stopping two weeks prior...This time, the car didn't stop though. I felt the car slow only a little. It happened to fast to think about hitting the e-brake or steer the car off the road. I was going 45-50 MPH in a 50 MPH zone.
A lot of "what-if's". What if I was in that same situation now? Would the outcome have been different, because of more experiance?...
I don't know, but I still feel terrible regardless of a mechanical failure out of my control. No one was hurt in my car, because I make everyone wear their seatbelts while riding with me. But an innocent person in the other car was badly hurt in that accident, and it's a heavy burden to carry....especially had being only 16 years old. A terrible feeling I wouldn't even wish on an enemy. Time goes on, but it doesn't heal anything....It's going on 4 years since the accident, & I want to write the other people involved a letter. I'm not sure if I'm overstepping my boundaries or not....though I did write them a letter 2 days after the wreck.
I usually don't talk about any of this, because I don't like to talk about it...but I felt the need to clear-up any pre-conceived thoughts about myself being irresponsible at any age. I didn't wreck the car out of carelessness.

I'm pretty sure Dorr is the one I'm talking about...I thought that was RT. 250 though. This dealership wasn't in the middle of town, it was between Milan and Norwalk....off towards that carpet store that always had those boats inside. Kinda looks like a rural area through there- about 5-10 min. outside Norwalk. There was a guy that owned a pretty bad-*** looking Camaro that lived near the Milan watertower (beside this factory) on the same stretch of road that the Chevy dealership is on. I wish I could be a little more specific, but I wasn't up there hardly at all last year.

People rag on me about being 17 with such a 'fast' car too... i haven't wrecked mine and take good care of it. Hell, i don't even take mine up to the redline. I've never been within 200 rpms of redline. Yea, I let 'er rip every now and then, but I don't drive it like i stole it.

General rule of thumb i've heard a few times is to take the total value of the car (money in the car, engine, maintanence, etc) and expect to be offered somewere around 1/2 to 2/3 of that cost.

ie. You put 10,000 into the car, expect about 5,000 to 6,500 for offers.

Hey, take it easy on the teenager comments! My state (NJ) is known for that. Thats why they raised the age to 18 to get your license... thank *** i got mine before the rule chagne (got it at 17), which is still late. Lots of people have had their car since they were 15. Ive had my car since i was 3, but havent driven it till i got my permit at 16.
