Rally Sport Camaro Name Origin?
The word 'rally' has many different meanings. Does the name Rally Sport have anything to do with Performance Rally? Some 1st generation Camaros where rallied way back then.
I assume that RS on later models = Rally Sport.

Your right, 'RS' does still mean 'Rally Sport'
Dunno what 'Rally' means though. I always thought it was just an appearance package.

Well, yes it is an appearance package, but I think he wants to know where it derived from. Like the IROC is from the "International Race of Champions".

I think the RS name came from GM's Sales Dept for a cheap low cost car with some style & looks and not a performance model.
Just check the options available, more for looks then Go.

All it takes is a look at an online dictionary, like www.m-w.com
rally, also rallye [French rallye, from English rally] : an automobile competition using public roads and ordinary traffic rules with the object of maintaining a specified average speed between checkpoints over a route unknown to the participants until the start of the event

That's one definition. That is usaully refered to as a Road Rally.
Performance Rally is a high spped event usaully on CLOSED public roads, also usually unpaved surfaces. Cars are fully prepped for racing.
You also have 'gatherings' called rallies such as political and biker rallies.

Yes, those are definitions of the name and they may have been the the reason GM Sales jumped on it. Nice name for the Low Ball price Camaro. Anyways the question was not about the definition of the name but the reason for it. One word "SALES".
