Which Recaro T/A '83 or '84 would you choose?

I've pondered this question for quite sometime. Since I have vested interested in this question (because I have a 15th Anniversary T/A) I was wondering what other fellow 3rd Gen enthusiasts thought.

Here we go...... I've had a love for the '83 and '84 Recaro Trans Ams (ala '83 Daytona 50 Pace Car, '84 15th Anniversary Trans Am and the special Recaro Edition Trans Am from '84) since '83+ hence, me buying an '84 15th T/A. Anyway, Why is it that when you see a '83 Daytona 500 up for sale and a '84 15th (you rarely see any Special Edition '84 Recaro T/As) there is a significant difference in price. In all reality, the cars are nearly identical on the interior, The motors are both 305 cu. in. (I know the '83 had a CFI and the '84 HO carb.) and the build quantities are only seperated by 1,000 units (1,000 more of the '83s 1,500 compared to 2,500). I can't remeber a time where the '83 Pace Car exceeded $8K in asking price.

Anyway, I enjoy them both but I am partial to my '84 15th. I wanted to hear from you guys/owners and get your thoughts. I too have been considering offing the '84 for say a '70- '71 T/A. I'm not deserting you 3rd Gen guys because I have my 5,800 mile TTA tucked in the garage next to my 15th.

Lets hear it from you guys. Oh for the ones curious about my 15th..... best price over 12k it's yours with all the goodies I have with it!

1984 15th Anniversay Trans Am, who cares about the 83 For me it's the classic white w/blue (THE classic Trans Am color scheme) and the air induction hood, also classic Trans Am. I regret selling mine just a couple weeks ago but it was either that or sell either my Firehawk or my GTA...

Hopefully when I am back in the market you will still have your. $12K sounds very reasonable for your car.

I say go for the 70! Awesome cars, make sure you get a Ram Air IV Personally I'd sell your 89 for a 69 I myself very much want a 69 Trans Am but I could never take that over my 2 3rd gens...

Well,
Let's see. The '84 15th Anniversary Trans Am was the first F-body to come with the 16 inch wheels and the Corvette Gaterback tires, so maybe that has something to do with it. Also, it being the 15th Anniversary for the Trans Am.
The '83 Daytona Trans Am was the 25th Anniversary of Daytona, which the Trans Am didn't always pace.
I myself love both cars for what they are. I didn't like the third gens until the aero package came out! Then, they looked low and sleek! And mean. I always thought that they looked meaner than the Camaros (I'm not trying to offend the Camaro owners).
I love the decal package you could put onto the Daytona (door decals and rear quarter decals) Trans Am, but the thought of gaterback tires with 16 inch rims would have put me over the top, to want the 15th Trans Am the most!
Now, if you were talking about rating the whole line of Recaro Trans Ams for the '83-'84 years, they would really only be the ones that weren't the Daytona or 15th Trans Ams. Those two were really not know as Recaro Trans Ams.
However, since you stated which cars you meant, I answered above.
As for the true Recaro Trans Ams of '82-'83, I would go again for the '84 Recaro Trans Am, only as that car had the aero package. Again, my reason above.
Now, as for your maybe getting rid of one car to get a 1970 Trans Am, I would say go for it!! Why? Well, for one thing, they are by far the highest in horsepower and torque. Low production numbers, true muscle cars in every sense! Besides going up in value, they have a design that will always stand out! A major part in the history of Pontiac and the pony wars! I don't ever think a 15th Anniversary Trans Am will pull as much money as a 1970 Trans Am in the same or close condition. Heck, even the GTO guys droul over the 1970 Trans Ams! Those engines were in the GTOs also!
You've got a nice collection right now, but do what you decide to do. Just try to be happy with your decision! You will always regret selling a car, even if you get another. I know, I've been there!

Nice topic,

George

Car: 1982 Recaro T/A
Engine: LU5 CFI 305 V8
Transmission: TH-200C
Axle/Gears: 3.23 F-body Fanatic: Yes
After seeing your 84 15th Anniv at the T/A Nationals, I can safely say it's the cleanest most original one I've ever seen! If you ever do sell it, make sure it gets into adult hands that know the rarity and have a respect for it, because they're darn rare, unique, and awesome and yours is a really stunning specimen!

I agree with what George said and I wanted to add this just to show the different Recaro Trans Am's in the thirdgen. There were seven variants of seats all different from the rest except the 85-86 were the same I believe. They are:

82 Recaro Edition, Y84: about 2000 made
83 Recaro Edition, Y84: about 2000 made (not sure)
83 Daytona 500 Pace Car, Y82: 2500 made
84 Recaro Edition, Y84: about 1321 made (not sure)
84 15th Anniversary Edition, Y82: 1500 made (pretty sure)
85 T/A with Recaro seats, AS5: no idea how many; I'm guessing 500
86 T/A with Recaro seats, AS5: no idea how many; I'm guessing 400

I hope you hang on to your 84 forever or till you find the right responsible next owner A 70 TA would be pretty tempting though. I've never owned a 2nd gen and that would be probably one of the top ones to drool over

Thanks KIZZ for the kind words. I REALLY love my 15th Anniversary and the same goes for my 20th T/A; however, I get this itch every 2 years for a new 'toy' Well my garage can't accomodate another 'toy' so that means one must go if I want to aquire a another ride. I also figure that parting with the 15th is the lesser of 2 evils if I ever do so. The 20th will always be worth more and more respected.

I still haven't haven't made up my mind if I'm going to activly sell it but if someone offers me the 12k or I stumble on deal for a '70 - '71 and then and only then I may make the move. In any case, I will ALWAYS have a soft spot for the '83 and '84 Recaro Interiored (is that a word??)T/As.
Dammit! I wish these cars got more respect! For their time they were one bad a$$ car. just $0.02

Its a toss up for me. I like the 15th Anniversary better because of the bigger wheels, solid color, and better motor. But when it comes to the black/gold Recaro models, I think I might prefer the clean, "ground effect-less" lines of the 83 over the 84.
