82 T/A Crossfire 305
Hello everyone. I am new here and wanted to share my new project. I just picked up an 82 T/A with the crossfire injected 305. Anyone have any production numbers, and any other info would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Andrew

hi,
The total number of Crossfire Trans Am's made is pretty low. Not to mention that everyone likes to rip them out in favor of something newer. it's really sad. There are very few originals left. They made about 22,000 total. That includes special editions within those 2 years, so as far as "normal" ones, it's closer to 18,000. I hope you decide to keep it original. Contrary to popular belief, it's a very reliable setup and has plenty of power. people always take out their aggression by swapping motors, when in reality it's the transmission that's the bottleneck, being a 3-speed with no overdrive.
82-83 Trans Am production numbers, excluding base Firebird and Firebird S/E:
1982
13037 165HP LU5 automatic 3-speed
00000 165HP LU5 4-speed
32892 145HP LG4 automatic 3-speed
07033 145HP LG4 4-speed
52962 total
1983
00000 190HP L69 automatic 4-speed
00662 190HP L69 5-speed
09206 175HP LU5 automatic 4-speed
00000 175HP LU5 5-speed
16855 150HP LG4 automatic 4-speed
05207 150HP LG4 5-speed
31930 total
1982 was the only 3rd gen year without overdrive. So I would keep it all intact for the sake of rarity / uniqueness. Do you have any pics? We'd love to see it. I hope this helps,
Take care, GT

Kazz,
I am really surprised at you tellingm e that the 82 cars had 3 speeds. What kind of trans is it? Good ol TH350?
I got this car from the original owner. The trans is shot, but the engine runs. The interior is mint except for the drivers seat. I will post pics as soon as I get some.

TH200? I am not very familiar with that trans, except that I know it has a pretty bad reputation of being a piece of junk. Anyone know right if another kind of trans is a bolt in ? How does a 700r4 or a th350 compare in terms of overall length and crossmember mounting?
I know it would be better to keep this car original, but I have a feeling that an LT1/t56 swap is in my future. Maybe a LT1/4L60 swap. I can't keep anything stock...LOL...
Did you guys check out my GTO? Not too many stock peices left there...

Well if you are into modding that Crossfire has to go. And the 700R4 Trans is fairly reliable and can be built to handle high horsepower if you want to add the parts necessary to do it.
What's up with the drivers seats? I have seen plenty of mint interiors with screwed up drivers side seats. Mines not mint but my drivers seat fabric is ripped to hell. I will ask this seperately on the body and interior board. This is starting to bug me.

BTW i have a 82 Z28 with a th350, i am thinking of swapping to a th200-4r, so i can have overdrive and better ratios then a th700-4r.

th350
Thanks to all for the help. Sounds like the easiest and cheapest way to go at the moment is to just swap in a TH350 and off I go. Anyone have any ideas for some cheap power?LOL

That GTO is hot!
As far as the 82 T/A. If it were mine I would not mod it too heavily. I would keep the early t/a as stock as I could for rarity and historical purposes. If I was going to LT1 swap I would pick out a "run of the mill" bird and mod it. That is just my opinion but if you ever mod the T/A as well as your GTO it will be one bad momma!

I was actually wondering if I can use this car to compete in the F.A.S.T. shootout. Thats Factory Appearing Stock Tire class. I have to check out their website to see if late model cars are allowed. Those cars are just awesome. They run high 11s on little skinny bias ply tires. Something to think about.
