What would you pay for this TTA?
I currently have my 1989 IROC Convertible, but my friend's father has an '89 TTA with 30k miles on it - he wants to sell it. Knowing the guy, it's immaculate, perfect, and very well cared for. He's not sure of what he wants for it, but he's gonna let me know tomorrow.
I'll have to sell the convertible to get it (my vert has 68k miles on it, is in excellent shape, but has TBI), so the questions are:
1) Would you sell the IROC Convertible for it?
2) What would you pay for the TTA?

Being that he's someone you know personally, I would see if I could get it for just under 5 figures. I'm talking $8000 - $9995 range. If he's the original owner, then there's no doubt he will be lamenting the $31,000 or whatever he paid for it originally, so hopefully he's not the original owner. Sounds like you'd be losing your daily driver in exchange for this car though. If you plan on making the TTA a daily driver, I recommend passing it up out of respect for a rare car and letting it go to a someone who can store it away longer.

Hopefully all this will work out - he'll be easy on me and I'll be easy on him. I'd love to play with my new TTA!

I can tell you, if you get it for that little, it'd be a steal. Look around and see what they are going for. Beaters go for that price range.
Unless he's going to be extremely generous, expect to pay a little more than that.

Heck,
I'd say more than just alittle! Probally about 12G's at least!
I would ask to see what else he has related to the car! The more he has, the higher the price! Owner's Kit alone sells from $450 to $650! Extra emblems go for about a grand! Whatever you do, at least go look at it! Maybe even get a drive!
Good luck and let us know what you do!

I believe he is smarter than you think, and would not sell it for under 10 grand, these posts are correct, it is hard to find a beater less than that. Yes, they are rare but don't let that sway your decision, I would drive it every day, not tuck it away like a picasso, my car is a lot more rare than a TTA and I drive it 150-200 miles per week. Low milage is good but look at a 1969 Z28 now with an owner who has no idea how many miles on it, but who has done a restoration (maybe up to $30K!). Just drive the car, have fun and some years down the line you can always restore it, they will always be worth good money.

OK sounds like this will be a once-in-a-blue-moon cruiser which is perfect for a TTA, so I say go for it, two thumbs up! Try to play the price down, regardless of what it is! Even if he says "aw heck, I'll let it go for $5000", don't start whizzing your pants and handing over cash Play dumb and try for even less I totally agree with mr.turbota on the papers/documentation/memorabilia issue! The more items he can dig up to go with this car the more it will be worth.

i guess I'm in the minority... Keep the vert.
TTA's are their own beast, but the convertibles are hard to beat. Granted the performance isn't comparable, but in my opinion, there will always be TTA's for sale, its just a matter of money. 30 years from now if someone wants one, all they'll have to do is take out a large loan. Finding a thirdgen convertible with all the options you want would be more difficult.

I'd say only buy the TTa if you can afford a beater for foul weather. if you pay any less than $12 000 you will have the cops after you for robbery. - even $15 000 isnt unreasonable for a good one, double that for one with a three figure milage.
the collectors are after them now, all realy nice thirdgens are appreciating in value.
Example, i bought my 86 305 s/c for £2000 GBP. about six months ago, the dealer i bought the car from offerd me £2500 GBP back.
I payed £2000 off the forecourt. he buys back for £2500, makes his proffit, i guess (and i know the guy, so i know his mark up) the car would go back on the lot for about £3200 thats about $4700. not bad for a car that has got a year older, and gained 17 000 miles
'cept i aint selling.

I would venture to say that you are correct considering your location. The states have these fbodies crawling around a dime a dozen. I don't see my firebirds appreciating in value any time soon. I think that some of the upper class fbodies, ie...TTA, Firehawk, GTA, and IROCs would be more saught after but the lowly sc's, and firebirds wont. Especially my 4 cyl. bird.

I just payed $12,500 for one w/ 50K in very good condition. All orginal & no mods. Interier & exterior in excellent condition. I have been tracking asking prices of TTA according to price & milage for about a year. The average that I came up w/ is a car in very good condition w/ 47,612 mile goes for $16,683. Now remember these are asking prices not actually sale amounts. So say we knock off 10% of the price & thats 48k miles for $15,000.
So a car w/ 30k miles is worth over $15k? Its just a guess!

Depending on their condition they can go for more. I think that you can make it mine and either enjoy it or make your money back. If I had a chance to trade my car for one I would do it in a second. No question you should do this. Play it cool though. Not getting to excited and handing over the cash so quickly is a good suggestion. Play it cool, get it for less.

I would at least look at it, I live my bird but if I had to choose between the 2 the TTA would win, hands down.

I went and looked at it; it's an awesome machine. A few cobwebs here and there from sitting in the garage for so long.
He bought the car in 1989 and drove it around town awhile racing fools who'd taunt him on the tollway. He put in a chip and a new thermostat as the only mods. Then he had a minor stroke and never moved the car for a few years. Once he'd recuperated, he took it to Pontiac and had them change all fluids and clean it up. Then it went back to the garage.
It's been there ever since - should run great, but the battery is dead. He's getting a new one. It's in excellent shape - all original - perfect body, perfect paint, no wrecks, no door dings, perfect interior. The Gatorbacks are gone (dryrot), and the rear wing has two cracks in it.
Unfortunately for me, he went to NADA guides before I showed up and now he's convinced it's worth $22k b/c of it's perfect condition. I told him that's overblown and he said he'd sell it for less than that, but he wasn't sure how much less. I think he'd sell for $17-18.
Since my IROC convertible is free and clear, and his TTA would require me getting a short-term loan on a third car, I'm letting it pass. Paying in the high teens for a toy right now isn't a good idea - I'll buy one later though - they seem to be plentiful. Gotta love the power of those TTAs!
If anyone's interested in buying it, let me know - I told him I'd help him sell it - he's near 60yrs and doesn't want people coming to his house. bsschneider@sbcglobal.net

Sounds like a nice car. For some reason the TTAs have not been selling too well lately. The same cars appear on ebay and the trader sites over and over. I shopped for a while before I bought mine with 1110 miles for $20k a little less than a year ago. I would think $17k for one with 30k miles would be paying a bit too much given the current market. There is one in my local trader magazine this week with 12k original miles for $17,500 (I think it is in Vermont). So if you really want one you can find one in your price range with low miles it will just require some patience and research. Good luck and keep us posted if you buy one or come across any good deals you want to pass along.

Cracked wing is worth $500 off asking price There will be more fixes too, all the vacuum lines, misc. rubber parts etc $15k is a fair price for one in that shape. All depends how bad you want it.

What the car is really worth is what a seller is willing to sell it for & a buyer is willing to pay for it. If the seller wants 20K, its worth 20k. If the buyer wants it for 15k is worth 15K.
It think you passing on this car is good. You love your car & thats whats important. Just keep your eyes open & if an affortable TTA comes along & you still want it, buy it. Otherwise enjoy your car.

I paid $15 grand for mine with 21,000 original miles. Based on exceptional condition I thought THAT was a fair price. Even then I was treated like I was getting a bargain ??? I originally heard the guy wanted 15,000...but then when I got there and checked it out...the wife was demanding 17,500! I told them that 15,000 was what I originally herd the car was offered and I told them that if they couldn't sell for asking price...TO GIVE ME A CALL and I would "unload" it off their hands for 15 even. Funny, the guy then told me that he would sell it to me right then and there!!! vetoing his wife's earlier appraisal.

This may sound dumb... but whats in a TTA? is is a turbo V6 or turbo V8? I know the '80 (?) TTA was a 301, but not sure about the 3rd gen TTAs...
