Trans Am Barn find, whats it worth?
THis will be kinda long but here goes.I just went to look at an 86 T/A that the owner just died.It is being stored with a tractor and a pick up and was covered with dust so bad that i couldnt even see the windows.Well the car is black with gold ground effects and gold 16 in T/A wheels. The interior is perfect and it has power RECARO seats that are perfect. Also has pwr windows, locks, mirrors, antenna, and a self dimming rear view mirror.ALso t-tops.It has a 305 Tuned port and automatic. It runs good but obviously needs a tune up,paint is gone,A/c is shot but the body is perfect, not one ding on it and it runs and drives good.I can get it for $1700 is that a pretty good price? Are the recaros rare on an 86 model?ALso,its a G92,J65 car. Thanks

to the best of my knowledge no thirdgen ever came with power Recaro seats, so make sure you're not getting ripped off. Look for AS5 (85-86 code) on the SPID sheet, otherwise it's some homemade deal. Recaro seats on an 86 are very rare. and I think it's the last year. Nobody knows how many were made in 86 that way, but the number is very small. Like I said though they should be manually adjustable. They're the same L-Series seats used from 1981 - 1986 and they are manually adjustable by design. I doubt there's even room for power rails unless you want to feel like you're sitting up on a bar stool w/ your head going through the t-tops. $1700 sounds like a great deal to me even if it was a regular T/A. If you get it I recommend keeping it all stock including the paint, decals, driveline, etc because it's already worth a lot more than $1700 and it'll be worth more in the future. If you get any pics I'd love to see it!
Maybe Don B can chime in on this.. he has a legit 85 Recaro.

Well it definitely looked factory. It had the power switches on the side of the drivers sear and said recaro just like the other ones on the board it didnt appear to be home made and they dont even know what recaros are. They just want to sell it because it reminds tham of their dad that just died.I will go back over there and check the Spid and take some pics.I am going to sell my miata and probably buy this car in a few weeks.

The factory recaros didnt come with power, couldnt order them that way. Sounds like a swap IMO. Take a look at 85 WS6's post about seat cloth just a few posts down, he has pics of his seat and the ones in the 86 should look EXACTLY like those, except for maybe the color. Gold wheels black car, interior is more than likely beige as well though.
In any case, $1700 sounds good if the car is in decent shape and runs ok. Might leak a bit if its been sitting a long time.

The seats look just like the ones in the post a few down by WS6.I tried out the buttons on the seats and they work.THe fronts match the backs(cloth wise but the backs dont say recaro).ARe you sure there were none made? These sure do look like factory ones to me especially since they match and are in perfect condition.THese are the first set of Recaros i have ever seen.ALso,the car has a big hood bird. Was this car anything special at all?

Interesting find
85 and 86 were the 2 years that that RPO AS5 was in effect.
This option was not available with RPO AC3 Power Seat. If this is wrong please let us know with some more info!!
It was available with B20, Luxury or Custom Trim Group.
This group included custom seat belts, deluxe split rear folding seat, custom front bucket seats, deluxe door trim, dash mounted map pocket, carpeted door kick pads, adjustable headrest, door map pockets (with power windows)
With all those map pockets you can see the T/A was made to travel heheh.
The 82 Recaro T/A was the only true Limited Edition Recaro (a pre-determined build qty), the 83 and 84's were made to order.
Somebody correct me on this if I'm wrong.
Please see kizz's website, its the only one on the WWW dedicated to the Recaro Firebirds !! Awesome I think he keeps his car in his living room
85 and 86 saw the Recaro seat only as an option. The seats are identical for those 2 years.
Good luck with this car, takes some pics for crying out loud !! I would love to see them !
This 86 is a fine specimen, its at $6500 now on Epay

350TPI: That 1986 on ebay is what the barn find should look like, as far as exterior colors of body & wheels. Here's the link for anyone interested: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=1847220146
The gold looks like a "third degree" gold to me.. sometime in midyear 84 I believe they changed to a more dull gold and then sometime between 85 - 87 it got even more washed out and I think this is the 3rd variety shown here. it's not even a TPI and doesn't mention WS6 (although it probably has WS6) and it's getting a bid at $6500.. for all intents & purposes this is a "regular" 86 T/A and they made 49,000 of 'em. My guess is they made probably about 500 - 600 like the one in the barn, judging by how often they show up. just goes to show you what it could be worth since they made so few.
The hood bird was optional in 85-87 and it's code is DX1 (is that right Don?)
We're all dying to see the SPID sheet and pics. Feed our hunger.

nosaint, I MUST be missing something big here. I and all of these other guys have never heard of factory power Recaro's and all of a sudden you post saying that they are real and that they were a $1,000 option. I went over your site with a fine tooth comb and found NO option code what so ever for them even though you seem to list most of the other RPO's. You don't even list AS5.
What gives? What's the RPO code for these $1,000 power Recaro's?

Whoa there big boy!
Didnt really want to get into a war of the APO's. So here is the deal. Back in '86 (yeah 1986) I was looking at buying a new black and gold Trans am and I really wanted it to have Recaro's.
It was a special order and I had it all set up to be power and the cost was 1295 or something. The delivery date was so terrible that I went with a Corvette instead and got the power leather sport seats not to mention a 350 TPI
Now, twenty years later, when I got the chance to get my black and gold I snagged it. I still wanted the recaro's but my *** really loves vette seats so I went that route instead.
350tpi, take some pics and lets get this figured out!

I hope this isn't turning into one of those "Viscount buckets in 1983???" or "L98 in 1985???" or "LT1 in 1992???" debates fueled by misinformation and no proof to back it up.. Basically here's the deal: there's no verifiable proof of a 1986 f-body or any 1982-1992 f-body with power recaro seats. Period, end of story. The proof we need is a picture of a SPID sheet showing both AC3 and AS5.
In my opinion the car is a keeper regardless, and still dying to see it.. don't forget that 350TPI

man some people on this site wont acknowlege anything good out there, who cares if he found one, its great, believe him, it dont hurt you guys any. Whats a picture gonna go, if you that skeptical are you gonna call photoshop onhim, I could easily add ws6 to RPO card and you'd all believe it.
Im not starting a flame here, but it appears he doesnt know much about it, he didnt even know power recarros were rare, why would he immediately be lying about it. Its not that hard to believe. Especailly if another member verified that it in fact was available to order.

Like I said though, even if it was an 86 recaro in that condition for that price with manual seats, it would still be a keeper so I'm not dissing anyone or anything. Just need to see proof of AC3/AS5.

If it has a tag and if you see the AS5 on it then you have double confirmation of the Recaro seats.
Obviously it appears to be a rare car, the question remains......is it a legitimate factory option that broke the AC3 / AS5 rule or is it a dealer installed special like the one nosiant was offered!!
Stay tuned !

350TPI, I figured I would jump in, I have been watching this thread. It is very interesting and I look forward to seeing the pics and getting the whole story.
Good luck buying the car, it sounds like a nice one with or without the odd recaro option combo.

those are corvette seats as far as I can tell on the suntour.. having power on those wouldn't strike me as unusual since any vette can have that too. I thought this 86 barn T/A had the L-series type which is the one with the big square open headrest with a double net inside the headrest. used from 1981 until 1986 on fbodys. *that* type of seat with power option is something i've never seen and i doubt we'll ever see it, unless 350 TPI's find is the first one.. still highly skeptical but we'll see. could be an anti-climactic false alarm or a whole new can of worms. the suspense is killing me

Hi all!
Pontiac never released any car with powered Recaro seats. The cost would have been too much!
Alot of Recaro seats look the same, unless you know what to look for!
You could have bought regular Recaro seats for around $300 per seat. Powered started around $900 up to $2500 each!! All this was without brackets or headrests!
I have full-powered Recaro seats in my 1981 highly modified Turbo Trans Am. Being the top of the line Recaro seat at the time (mine is cloth, not the leather), it came with tons of goodies! These were know as the Recaro "Ideal C" seats.
Powered Recaros tend to have more round *****. The bottom has 2 (one on each side) of them-for adjusting the side leg boosters in or out, depending on the "width" of the driver or passenger. The middle of the upright has 2 of them (again, one on each side) for adjusting the side boosters in or out (as stated above, but for road racing, you make them fit you tight, so you don't move around). Then, at almost the very top, one **** (located by the door side) to let the top seat panel move out, giving the person seating in the seat, a better support for his/her back (in other words, the seat is kinda rounded to fit you, not like a straight seat back).
These seats have the power controls mounted towards the center console. They also have a toggle switch for an air compresser to fill up three air bags for the person to bring the bottom of the seat out to fit him better. Three blue buttons would release the air out of the bags, one per button. Then, there was a toggle switch for the seat to recline/go foward with a power motor. And, a swich (again, toggle style) for a seat heater (so cool to use, while driving with the T-Tops off during winter-you don't even need the heater on!). It heated the lower back area, and the butt!!!! (Ha! I said butt!!!!!)
You also had a choice of net headrest, a full headrest, or (like mine), a full headreast with stereo speakers.
There was also a step down model of these seats, which also had power.
Recaro seats could be ordered with any material, so you could match your car's interior as well.
Chances are the owner (whether the original owner or the latest owner) had them put in. Are both front seats powered?
When do we get to see pictures?????
Hope this helps,
George

MR. Turbo TA,no only the drivers side is powered and the seats look just like all of the other recaros on this site.It has three power switches on the side of the seat just like the factory NON recaros and the front and rear seats match perfectly as the photos will soon show.It has the Sqare headrest with the net in it.*** i wish i had a feakin scanner this is so frustrating. Can i go to like office depot and have them put them on for me?I hate waiting and i have so many people doubting this even exists.I hope to have the car at home no later than tuesday. After i get it i will post many pics especially after i get it all cleaned up.The thing i am still confused about is do the RPOs show power recaros or not?The RPO decoder never said anything about them being recaros.

Wow!
Then it sounds like the owner had a professional installation done! Probally had a old seat that he converted to the matching Recaro. Recaro seats had different power switches on top of the center console side of the leg booster.
I suggest that you get an owner's history from your state, and try to contact them in order to find out more information.
I would love to see some photos! I don't know about where to get them scanned, but send some pictures (copies) to Dom (85 T/A WS6)! I'm sure he can scan them for you!
Good luck,
George

$1700 for that car? Damn, talk about the deal of a lifetime!! Maybe just for kicks you should play hardball and try to talk them down some..!? hehe. with a bit of cleanup I'd say it's reasonably around the $5000 range, give or take.
That power seat module looks like no other I've seen in a 3rd gen. I'm still highly skeptical & doubtful about its originality. Even with a SPID shot I'd still be skeptical but whenever you get a clear SPID shot, post it here if you can.

clearly that driver's seat is a LOT higher than the passenger's side seat and remember my "through the t-tops" quote? heh well that headrest is almost touching the freakin glass on top.. to me it's for sure a post-factory job. no way it should be that high.
it's probably clear I have a dual-opinion of the car.. 1) it looks very suspicious and is probably a post-factory job in my mind, but 2) even at twice that price, it's hands down a keeper.
Chris don't let the RPO decoder bother you.. it's really a piece of junk for unusual codes: AS5 : SEAT, FRT BKT, DELUXE. That's just vague and useless. Your seats are legit, it's just the power rail that seems like an add-on.
More pics and closeups whenever possible, OK?
