140 mph speedo
I was looking at this one T/A site and it said "With optional V-8s, a 140 mph speedometer was included. " Now that was posted under the 1986 catagory is this true? If so what was the optional V-8? and where can i get one? The speedo that is.

Aren't those really 145 speedo's. The highest number printed on them is 140 but there is another mark for 145, right? Just wondering.

Nope, the 140 speedo for T/A's, & Formula's were only good to 140 MPH, no xtra notch.

The Camaro's had 145 m.p.h. speedo's though right? Not sure but I thought the Camaro one was different than that.

Most 1986 Z 28's come with the 85 mph speedometer. I am convinced that I might have one of the very first in the production 1986 Z 28's to receive the 145 mph speedometer. My VIN is after 171,000. My engine is the LB9.

But I just noticed, my speedo says 140 with the extra notch like yours, except mine doesnt say 145 beside it, is mine the earliest version?

Momar,
Whoever put the dash in was so excited about it being the first 145 mph dash put in, that its crooked. The shame of it. In 1986 the car was a Z 28 first and then the B4Z IROC-Z performance package was added for 659.00 and its even 8th down the option list. Tinted glass and front and rear carpet mats are higher up on the option list. GM's priories were crooked too.
I wanted a Z 28 first and at that time period it just so happened that it was the luck of the carrier pulling in on the dealer lot that it turned out to be an IROC-Z too. Go read the thread on one of the lowest Z 28 IROC-Z and it explains it much better.
Bralgar,
I am going to have to start paying attention when I see any 1986 Z 28's and what dash they do have and I would bet that if your dash (140 mph version) was here, it would be crooked too.
All 85 mph dash's have the straight version because the assembly line people had it down pat on putting them in.

Uh, werent the other dashes practically the same just with a lower amount of numbers on the speedo? What would that have to do with it being mounted straight? I am not quite sure if you are trying to say it would be an 86 thing or what, but my friend has an 87 and an 89 with the 145 speedo and they are not like that.

Momar,
I have not been there but I truly believe that when your going at or near the 140--145 mph that dash looks really straight.
I believe it to be on error on GM assembly process for this dash being crooked.
I would almost be willing to bet that your friends dash is crooked too. Quality back then was not quite considered the norm yet.

It might be an error, but an error made individually, not necisarilly on all of them. I know that his 87s was straight, but I have not seen his 89 enough yet to know being as he just got it and doesnt have it insured yet.

not sure on this, but from what I have seen, the last 6 didgets indicate the part in the series for the year when they were made.
Unfortunately most firebirds are 2xx,xxx, and camaros seem to be 1xx.xxx
so a car with the serial number of 171,000 would be a camaro # 71,000 for the year. a Firebird would be 271,000.
BUT the same number is also in the front of the VIN, Chevrolet being 1, and Pontiac being 2 (the second VIN didget).
with this being said, there are probably several cars in front of both of you with the 145 speedo.
I am just guessing here, does anyone know for sure and have something better than internet info for it?

Upon closer inspection of my dash and speedo, I have come to the conclusion that your instrument cluster is not crooked, your pic is. The dash pad on my car and yours as well as everyone elses has an arc to it. And if you put a straight level line under that arc a wedge shape gap is left between the two. So, no, your dash is not crooked, mine has the same gapping but sitting in the driver's seat the dash looks straight, because it is. Who ever took the pic of your dash held the camera at a slight angle and aligned with the pad, thusly (I like using that word), your cluster looks crooked. And by the way my speedo does say 145, why I thought it didn't I'll never know.

Another crooked thing to notice about our cars is the on door panels. Did you ever notice how on camaros and early firebirds with the rectangle plastic trim piece that the lock, remote cable mirror, and door handle all attach to looks crooked? Well, its actually straight to the bottom of the door. The top of the door gets higher as it goes toward the back of the car...

When looking at my instrument cluster, it looks straight while in the car, but I decided to look at my picture and it looks crooked like raptors.
