17" and 18" IROC wheels, painted like stock

A lot of people have been wanting larger IROC wheels, but painted to give the most stock-like appearance possible.

I worked with Oasis Wheels, and got them to agree to paint them up the way we want if we do 10 or more sets.

Due to the amount of labor associated with masking the wheels, the price was a fair amount higher than I had hoped, but at least they're willing to do it.

Prices are as follows:
17" Polished IROCs, painted like stock are $300 per wheel plus shipping.
18" Polished IROCs, painted like stock are $345 per wheel plus shipping.

He also gave me a good price on the polished (unpainted) IROCs for those who may want those instead. We'll need 5 or more guys for those:

17" Polished IROCs for $190 per wheel plus shipping.
18" Polished IROCs for $230 per wheel plus shipping.

Weight for the 17" wheels is 28lbs per wheel.
Weight for the 18" wheels is 33lbs per wheel.

Shipping will be $40 per wheel.

I'd like to cap this at 2 weeks so that we can get the orders in while this whole deal is still fresh in the minds of the Oasis guys.

Hi Jim, I'm impressed with how fast you were able to get the ball rolling with these wheels. Unfortunately, I will not be able to order the wheels within the next (2) weeks. Will Oasis still be able to sell me a painted set of 17s at some later point?...do you have a contact number for them so that i could communicate with them directly later on?

Their number is on their website (I don't have it handy at the moment), but if you buy direct it will cost a lot more than through me. If you want them painted later on, I'm sure we'll still be able to do it, but it may cost a bit more. When you're ready, just let me know and I'll see what we can do with the pricing.

Extremely interested in painted 17's, however would like first to see a pic of the finished product before I hand over the money. I really like Mr. IROC-Z's wheels. Color is perfect. Great work Jim! If you could get a pic from Oasis it would be much appreciated.

No mention of the width, 8"? I am interested in 2 each, unpainted, 17"x9" with 5" back spacing and 17"x11" with 6" back spacing.

I can't get a picture because this isn't a product that they currently offer. I had to convince them that I'd buy 10 sets before I could even get a price quote, which is why I'm doing this as a group purchase.

The color will be correct, because I will supply the GM paint code to them with the order. The only possible issue that could arise is how well these are masked, and considering how hard they're stroking me on the cost, they damned well better be masked perfectly. In fact, if I get all 10 of these orders, I intend to send a stock IROC wheel to them so there will be absolutely no question what the stock paint is like.

17" wheels are 8" wide, 18" wheels are 8.5" wide. These are the only widths available.

Wow... I know the price is higher than expected, but I still thought there would be way more interest than this. Is the price a deterrant or are the legions of people who emailed me, PM'd me, and posted on the forums just not seeing this GP?

There is, but width is the key to the rocs and for simply just painting them, that just wont cut it, especially when 4th gen wheels are an option. Painted Rocs...Pricey!

The width was known long before people started asking about painted versions, but plenty of people still had an interest.

I do agree that the paint turned out to be a lot more expensive than I had anticipated, but people still have the option of buying the polished IROCs and taking them to a local body shop to have them painted.

Chrome is an entirely different process. I can sell the chrome wheels for less than these painted ones too. The cost comes from the labor involved with masking and painting the wheels. For chrome, you dip them in a couple tanks and let them dry... much less labor involved.

I've got my chrome prices at home. I can't remember off the top of my head. I'll mention right now though that they're more than the chinese-made chrome IROCs that are always on Ebay. These are made in the US and are a very high quality wheel.

The GP doesn't have enough interest to ever get the 5 guys necessary, but PM me and we can work out a price for one set.

Thanks

No. Oasis doesn't have any pics of their polished stuff, because they sell mostly chrome. The polished ones are a special order.

IROC RIMS.

Here is my problem, I really want to get a set of polished or painted, but the pirce is way more than chrome!!!! There is also a lot of prep and process for them to chrome the wheels as well. I think it really stinks that Americas Tire Co here in northern cali can quote me 200.00 a wheel for the chrome in 18" and the polished/ painted are more. You go look at wheels and chrome ones are always more than polished.

These wheels are more chromed than polished too. The added cost for the painted ones is due to the amount of time it takes to mask and paint the wheels. I don't personally feel that the price is necessarily all that appropriate either, but that's the price they quoted me, and I'm sure not going to sell them below cost!

If you buy the polished wheels and bring them to a local body shop to paint them, you may find that you can save a little bit of money, or it may wind up costing you just as much. It all depends on how good the body shop is, and how much they charge.

The other fact of life is that if you want a good quality american made product, you've got to accept the fact that it's going to cost significantly more than a chinese made knock-off.

Jim85IROC, would you please reply with the paint code for the silver IROC wheels. I'm planning to purchase a set of the 18" wheels from Oasis. They'll 'polish for paint' apparently, and I'm going to be painting the wheels myself. Thanks, Larry.

off topic but none the less.. Any ideas if anyone makes the later double stripe IROC wheels.. It would be sick to find them in 18" and resemble the stock color coding.

None. Everybody bailed out when they found out they were going to cost money.
1200 to 1600 bucks for a set of custom rims isn't bad.. idk maybe its just me.

Then again, if i eventually do rims it will be because of an impending massive rotor/caliper brake swap.

I take it nothing ever happened with this thread huh?

Shame. Had I seen it earlier, I would definitely have ponied up the cash for a set of painted 18's.

Jim85IROC, do you have any attentions on attempting another one of these group purchase's in the near future?

Let me know.

Theres alot more LABOR in chroming a rim then painting one. You have to have a flawless polished rim before you chrome plate it. the ONLY less labor is not taping them off. You have about an Hour in the nickel tank, and 1minute in the chrome tank. and your done.

This is crazy also... If they Chrome a **** load of rims. Ask them for a picture before the send them off for chrome. You would think they keep both polished and chrome in stock.

$110/115 Is ballpark..

I charge $50-100 per rim for powder coating them. and its gonna be the same labor in taping them off as painting them.

Good Luck selling Jim, I get hammered with E-mail and PM's wanting composit work and billet cnc parts but a hand full outs 10 people actually buy/get stuff done. If I was in the market for IROC's id jump on a set.

I was going to say i might be interested, but they don't offer a 17" diameter, only 18 and above...18 is a little too big for my taste, but i like the 10.5 inch width...I'm suprised they don't offer 16 and 17 inch

Re: 17" and 18" IROC wheels, painted like stock

I'll be happy to offer a group purchase price for painted, chrome, or polished wheels, but somebody would need to come to me with 5 or more guaranteed buyers before I'm going to do it. I've done a few group purchases on other boards, and every time it's turned into a major headache and resulted in not meeting the minimum number of buyers every single time.

Re: 17" and 18" IROC wheels, painted like stock

Which size chrome IROC rim looks best in terms of not being "bigger" than the car, the 17" or 18" rims? When I say bigger than the car, I mean, the rims look like a custom pimped out larger than anything else style. I want a bigger than 16" stock rim, but still look like a factory fitted rim.

By the way these are going on an 89 IROC.

Thanks

That's entirely subjective, and every person will have a different answer. I think the 18s look great, but anything bigger is too big. Your milage may vary.

Re: 17" and 18" IROC wheels, painted like stock

As soon as I finish-up some drivetrain work on my car I'd be up for the 17's. I'll need them to clear the new brakes!

Re: 17" and 18" IROC wheels, painted like stock

This is still something I'd be interested in if we could get enough people who are also interested and willing to spend the money.

It's either 18" Iroc's or 17" ZR1 wheels that I'm looking to go with but I'm currently leaning more towards the Iroc's since they retain the "stock" look, which, in my opinion, suits these cars best...

By the way, I just found out that these wheels are actually 8.5" wide rather than the 8" they're advertised at. Not a huge difference, but worth mentioning. So whats happening with this thread? Is this idea dead in the water or are we willing to give it another go?

I email'd Oasis wheels not too long ago about painting these wheels to mimic the factory look and here was the response they sent me:

We sell these wheels with 0mm offset all-around and they fit - no problem.
However, if you'd like we can custom machine two of the wheels with 20mm
offset for an additional charge. We can paint them like the original wheels
for $100 more than the chrome price. The price for chrome in 18" is $310 and
the wheels are 18"x8.5"

I'd definitely buy some polished 17" or 18" iroc's if they were 9" or 9.5" wide.

Hey JIM85IROC, any chance that you could try to get a group purchase together again for these wheels? (either 17 or 18 inch) I know you tried before and then some people backed out (I did as well)...but i think the key would be to plan the purchase FAR in advance so we have more than ample time to gather all necessary information and for people to commit themselves (and make sure they have the money to do so!)...

Re: 17" and 18" IROC wheels, painted like stock

I put a lot of effort into the GP last time, and spent a lot of time communicating with Oasis, only to come back with a price and have absolutely nobody buy a set. I wasted my time, and Oasis' time. I'll offer another GP, but I'm not going to go to Oasis to work out the details until I have at least 5 people commit with a deposit. I should be able to secure the same prices I mentioned in the first post as long as I have 5-10 committed buyers.

I do apologize for myself and others who did not commit, if you were able to get at least 5 people to commit, would they have the choice of either 17" or 18"?, the width for each size was 8" correct?

Re: 17" and 18" IROC wheels, painted like stock

A little off topic but, I've been involved in more than my fare share of group purchases' throughout the years on this and many other forums. Many of them, I started myself. Some went through, others didn't. I know it can be a lot of work to get these group purchases' going and I know how annoying/frustrating it can be to find out there aren't enough people actually willing to pony up the cash when the deadline finally arrives. All those phone calls and emails you made to various companies all ends up being for nothing...

The reason the original GP didn't go through was mainly due to the deadline being as short as it was. A mere two weeks to find 10+ members with a spare $1500 laying around to buy new wheels is going will be pretty hard. Hell, we're all third gen owners after all. If everyone had that kind of cash just laying around at any given moment, odds are, we wouldn't be driving third gens

In my experience, in order to have a successful G.P. (especially one's where the product being considered costs in excess of $1000 or more) it's best to give people ample time to come up with the money BEFORE you set an official deadline. Once you have enough people ready and willing to pay the money and are committed, THEN set a deadline. That way, even if nobody else joins in after that, the G.P will still go though because you already have enough people anyway.

That's just been my experience of coarse, just thought I'd share. Not trying to tell anybody how to run these things but just something you may want to think about if you want to give this GP another go.

I'm still interested in getting these wheels (18 x 8.5 painted) but I'd need until the end of the month to come up with the money. I've got a million and one other bills I have to pay this month before I can run out and put myself further in debt with a new set of shiny wheels for my ride

Count me in if your willing to give us enough time to come up with the dough. I'm positive there are plenty of members here who would love a set of 17 or 18" iroc wheels painted like the factory wheels but people need enough time to come up with the money.

If you could start another thread and keep it alive over the next month or so, making sure that everyone sees it, I'm confident we can come up with enough people...

Re: 17" and 18" IROC wheels, painted like stock

You're right... 2 weeks was quick. I did that because right away I had a bunch of guys tell me that they had cash in hand and were ready to buy. The group purchase I did prior to that was for carpet on a popular truck forum, and it languished for a couple months. I had 25 guys say "definately" so I set the price that I offered for 20-30 buyers. I wound up with 8 people. Generally, I'm not a big fan of group buys. Part of it is my fault though. I do such small volume that it's not worth it for me to get set up to accept credit cards, so I do paypal and check/money order only. If I accepted credit cards, I could just hold the orders until I got the number I needed, then charge them all at once. That's not really possible with paypal and checks.

Crusin,
The 17" wheels are 8" wide, and the 18" wheels are 8.5" wide.

Re: 17" and 18" IROC wheels, painted like stock

Thanks Jim for that info, I also agree with LT1FUN regarding the strategy for arranging the purchase. However, the phrase "Ample Time" is subjective and could mean one month to LT1FUN, or it could mean 6 months or more to me...I am defintley interested in these wheels (i am going ot buy them) but I would hope that if you did a group purchase that it could take place a while from now (however long that is) so that we could get more people...I'll admit that I would personally (as it would be to my benefit) like to see this done early next year (spring 2008) as that would be ideal for me, but i cannot honestly try to convice you (Jim) to set it up that far in advance because it suites me better...in fact, if you didn't wan't to get involved again i would perfectly understand that, although i hope you would give it a second chance. I recently used microsoft paint to edit the chrome wheels to get an idea of what they would look like if they were 'blacked out' (in part), a look that i really like from using the program, just another idea, let me know ehat you think

Re: 17" and 18" IROC wheels, painted like stock

well since you talked them into a gp u think u can talk them into making them wider than 8 inches like 9 or 9.5 because I would buy a set in a heart beat Ive always wanted a set of painted ones but 8" wide just aint wide enough

Re: 17" and 18" IROC wheels, painted like stock

The originals were painted entirely, then machined( taking the paint of and final shaping, then clearcoated. Were they not? Why can't these nguys do just that. No masking. I prefer the machined/satin style look anyway. I've got a set of original BMW 540 wheels that the damned paint came off... Clearcoat all the way!

By the way, what is the widest wheel to fit in the 3rd gen rear well?

Thanks

Art Oh and it's great to be back to 3rd gen
