INFLATABLE RESTRAINT (air bag)

It's supposed to blink for 5 seconds or so when you first turn it on so you knwo the air bag system is working okay.

In other words, no problem here....

Yep. Self-check. You only need to be concerned if it either doesn't blink or stays on steady.

I am not sure about the Camaro, but If I remember right it should Blink 7 times... It is going through a systems/Diagnositic Check.

In some cars IF the bulb burns out, broken, or removed then THere is another light that comes on, not sure if tis the seatbelt light or the SES light...

Check your Owners Manual, usually there is a wealth of info in there about it.

the light should come with the ignition on just for a bulb check than go out. If it is flashing it is sending a code for the air bag system.

That's not correct - at least for my 91 Bird. Owners manual says it should blink, and if it doesn't - or stays on blinking - that's when you have a problem. Please check your info, mrbestwrench, and for the applicable years....

wow. you're smart!

heres what you do... take that yeller wire hangin under da dash, lean over the wheel and touch it to power on the fuse box... be sure you're leaning far over the steering wheel when ya do dat... it helps if you just set your face on the center.

My steering wheel appears to have the center portion misaligned because I can see some yellowy plastic poking out from the black leather center portion of the wheel. Lately my INFL REST light has been coming on at random and staying on for a few minutes at a time and then going back off so I have a few questions:

1. Should I attempt to remove the center black portion of the wheel to re-align the portion with the yellowy plastic underneath? Will the airbag deploy if I attempt to do so?

2. What could cause that INFL REST light to just come on at random when the wheel has been misaligned for a long time now? Any ideas?

Thanks for your help!

The recommended procedure for removing the Airbag is to disconnect the battery for 20 Min or so, before doing your work. This gives everything a chance to discharge so you don't have an accidental spark etc.

I recommend Reading the service manual for your car FIRST and use a certified mechanic for the process if you have any doubts.

Re: What Does INFL REST mean?

Okay so theres all this talk about flashing and turning off. But how about if it flashes and then stays on for the time that i drive it? Is there an error code that will tell me why its on? I dont want an airbag to the face for stopping at a red light.

I just watched it this morning and it flashes 7 times. but after the 7th it flashes on and stays on for aslong as the key is in the ignition.

Re: What Does INFL REST mean?

I have a 91 Z28 and it had the 'infl rest' light that stayed on, but it was only a missing 10a fuse for 'SIR'. I put in a 10a fuse and it now blinks and goes off as it should. Just a reminder to try checking the fuse first.

Re: What Does INFL REST mean?

If the air bag light is on that just means the system is deactivated due to a malfunction. The air bag will not deploy in the event of an accident if the light is on.

Airbags, schmairbags, who needs 'em? Remember back in the day, the 1950s, dashboards had chrome bullets for radio ***** and metal trim rings on the steering wheels, if you got in an accident they would hose the blood off and sell the car to the next unsuspecting victim.

In reality we drove safer in those days too, knowing that in the event of an accident we were less likely to survive.

Re: What Does INFL REST mean?

When I bought my 90 iroc someone had already removed the airbag wheel and installed a grant wheel, but it was missing the horn components, so I picked up a late 80's style wheel and I just pulled out the bulb for the airbag light.

I have owned my Bird for a little while now and this is the first time the light has come on. I have an aftermarket steering wheel installed prior to me and the light bugs the hell out of me.

what better fix is there? you no longer have an air bag. Only other option I could see is maby a chip that removes the air bag monitoring system? idk, not sure how the air bag system actually works.

But i do know that since the parts to make it function arent there you can clear the code all you want but it will keep coming back because the problem still exists

So, if the light flashes, and then stays illuminated (and will occasionally flash a few times while driving, then back to illuminated) is there a danger of it going of randomly?

Re: What Does INFL REST mean?

Those of us who have experienced an airbag want to never repeat the experience. But in my state the law has serious penalties for driving with a disabled or malfunctioning air bag system. It's a big part of the annual safety inspection. The solution is to only drive cars built before 1990. Our "genius" lawmakers are mostly chauffered, and when the few do drive, they drive so slow that they have no idea how bad airbags are. If you would always use a properly functioning 3-point seatbelt, then no airbag could ever contribute anything. No more broken noses. There's one other option. Move out of the crooked-government US of A, to a country with more intelligent laws.

Re: What Does INFL REST mean?

OK.. I'll try to make this simple. If there are no Mods to to car, and the light comes on, there's a problem. If you have replaced you wheel, deleted the Ecm, or rigged the wiring. Your AB is probably inactive. Just pull the dash, and remove the bulb. Don't drive like an *** and you will be fine.

Translation:
I just changed my ignition switch and I finally turned it on. It was running good, then I went on a test drive and it drove good until the INFL REST light showed up. The car turned off, I don't know what to do it was sitting there for a while because the ignitiion cylinder was messed up but I changed it and now it is doing that.

In all honesty it sounds again like the ignition switch or something along those lines. I think the INFL REST light might be one of the lights that will come on when the car is on but no longer running, or if there was a blip in the power.

It sounds electrical, and probably a pain to find.
