Re: Everything I know about 9-Bolt Rearends!
Australian market Nissan 240SX might use them as they are built locally in Australia where there used to be rules about cars having a certain proportion of locally made components
UK built Nissans do not use the 9 bolt axle they are built here in the UK to japanese specification and we have no rules about local content
where are US nissans built??
probably US or Japan and probably to japanese specification
I Suggest you go for full spool
I suggest you try ROMAC distributors in the US
You want to ask for a full spool for a Borg warner M78 as used in Holden Commadore with 3.45 gears and 28 spline axles.
The ROMAC distibutor will have to order it from Australia hence i have used an Australian car in the description
I have since found out that a mini spool mentioned in earlier posts will only work if you have an open differential i.e they will not fit the POSI you have.
if you have no luck with US suppliers
use the same description with Street and Strip gears (G&J differentials)
6-8 weeks to get to you by boat, 7-10 days by air mail
standard POSI centre weighs 7 kg without gears i'd suggest the spool is probably 2KG
Australian post will allow this package to be sent via a normal Mail office rather than TNT DHL or UPS it is not to heavy and it is not too big.

A spool isn't normally recommended if you do a lot of street driving as it will scrub the tires slightly and chirp going around tight corners.

Re: Everything I know about 9-Bolt Rearends!
I dont under stand the bottomout till they wear down??? why it need to be resurfaced??? you just can shim the spring inside for a stiffer posi no???

Re: Everything I know about 9-Bolt Rearends!
cones eventually hit the ends of the case
so instead of friction between cone and side of case the friction is just the end of the cone on the axle end of the case
in this situation they don't work
however if you pull a cone out you will find the face is flat but the section for the splines is counter sunk by .5-1mm
so you can take that much off the flat face with a lathe, 1 mm off the face of the cone without detriment to the spline width acting on the axle.
you then add shim between cone and side gear until you can not seat the cross properly
then you take out enough shim to allow it to seat.
once happy with one side build the other side the same checking how much shim you use
then build up the normal way....ring gear side on axle shaft sat in vice
cone, shim, side gear, check cross fits, spring pack side gear shim cone (align) the top half and put the lid on
put other axle in to check alignment of cone and gear
loktite the bolts
do up in cross pattern to take up the spring
do up to torque....
remeber the old 25 spline versions of these came new with only 1 mm of space at the end of the cone and they were good for 50-60K miles of normal drving
9 bolt ones are redesigned with a different spring pack and a bit more cone space.
And
i doubt you will ever got it to lock totally
check out the how to rebuild PDF linked on this site in the technical section

Re: Everything I know about 9-Bolt Rearends!
My 9 bolt is finally apart... the cones are worn bad..and the case too.
i am curious if its possible to use any other minispool or lock right or anything else made for a GM, ford, chrysler with 28 splines...
28 splines is 28 splines???
the complete assembly is 3 1/2 wide inside the carrier
the cross shaft is .660''
4 1/2''long
if not i will probabely end welding the spiders and the cones...
cant find anything in us and www.9bolts.com dont answer e mails
dave i would like to chat online with you...please add me on facebook

You could try calling Six States, in Salt Lake City...and for "Conan". I was able to get 9 bolt parts from him when I was living there. Place is an awesome resource.

i called six states...harrop, kaaz, 9 bolts, and the only option left is full spool in ebay.au... or weld this diff.

Re: Everything I know about 9-Bolt Rearends!
harrop do this
http://www.harrop.com.au/drive_detai...99-TTRC9837-00
it will fit all 9 bolts that had a 3.45:1 or 3.89:1
it will not fit series 2 gears
you will need series 3 gears
all 9 bolt axle cases are the same
it is a truetrac centre
that utilises the interior parts from eaton trutrac for the Pontiac GTO/monaro
in a cutom built forged case made by harrop to fit the camaro firebird and VL-VS holden commadore 9 bolt. which is the same axle as the Gen III camaro IrocZ and Firebird TA but with different spring mounts
if you want a KAAZ clutchpack centre
the part is DAG-3820 they do limited runs of this centre.
you will have to order it through you loacl KAAZ dealer
its called a 2 way because it more or less locks up on accelration and deceleration
it is specifically made for the series2 series 3 9 bolt housing
it needs series 3 gears will not work with US GM 2.77:1 or 3.08:1 will work with Australian 2.92:1 and 3.23:1 and all 3.45:1 3.5:1 3.89:1 3.9:1 4.11:1 gearsets
Holden commodore VN-VZ with v6 engine
Holden commodore VN-VS with v8 engine
both used a BTR sourced M78 which is what you chaps in the US and Canada call a 9 bolt diff

Re: Everything I know about 9-Bolt Rearends!
28 splines is 28 splines
SAE dictate shape root and all other dimensions
28 splines for 9 bolt = same as 28 spline for ford 9 inch
no...the axles probably won't fit the housing but the splines from both axles fit into the centre.
you can modify a ford 9 inch with 28 spline centre and fit your 9 bolt axles
but you will need a 9 inch that is long enough to cut down and you will need to weld the ends of your 9 bolt axle tubes on

I've got a rearend out of an 88 GTA Trans Am with brand new cones and an aluminum support cover and a 3:27 gear that was in my 82 TA that worked great when I pulled it to put to the Moser in I have now. If you are in or anyone is within driving distance of Gulfport, Mississippi is interested I would take any reasonable offers for it.

OK standard diff oil
with mopar sure grip additive works fine, this style of cone diff was invented by Borg warner for Mopar
pop into your local chrysler place get the additive for 8 3/4 sure grip clutch centre...yes thats a clutch application but its all the same additive
and use it with 90 weight gear oil..
or just use the stuff they use in catapillar plant diffs
its a ready-mixed and it works great....
shims
you may have to find shims from some other application
buy a pile of them
take them to a machine shop who can clamp the pile into a cylinder and hone out the middle...
various US suppliers will do shim
infact the first few posts of this thread make suggestions

I used Mobile synthetic 75-90 with the GM additive. I highly recommend the GM additive. After I rebuilt/shimmed my 9-bolt posi it popped and creeked until a used the additive. If you look in the "Product review" section I listed the GM part number. I was amazed how effective it that little bottle of fluid worked. I don't think the brand/type of oil is as important as the GM additive. As long as the oil used is quality stuff.

Re: Everything I know about 9-Bolt Rearends!
excellent news
sorry i don't come here very often being more interested in removing 9 bolt axles from GM products and putting them in Mopars
but i am glad you got it all sorted.
once you pull one to bits there is not a lot in there is there?.
i will upate on the true trac front
i have a sneaking suspicion that this will also fit a series 3 equipped car
http://www.quaife.co.uk/shop/products/qdh3m
Morgan make old-looking, new sports cars in the UK and have done for a very long time, they cost a lot and look rubbish in my opinion but to some they are obviously the "Bee's Knees" any excuse to put on the leather string backed driving gloves
Anyway they used a BTR M75 beam axle in open and posi style
and an M76 in IRS style centre in a few of the 90s cars
an M75 is just an M78 9 bolt axle with a ring gear that is 7.5 inch outside dimeter not 7.8 inch outside diameter
(an M76 is a 9 bolt IRS centre with an M75 ring gear but don't let that confuse things)
everything else is the same.
its just a lighter weight ring gear
same inner diameter same PCD for the ring gear bolts same centres for the bearings same flange as the series 3
so if this quiafe product fits the Morgan axle
it will fit a 9 bolt axle
have spoken to Quaife and they suggested that i vist with axle half shafts and cones and gears and a spare 9 bolt centre for comparison, which i have not yet done as i don't have £660 to spend and its a bit of a long way.
however here is the blue print
so you can make up your own mind
http://www.quaife.co.uk/sites/defaul...ings/QDH3M.PDF
looks like less $$$ than either the Harrop or Kaaz option with all the benfit of the Harrop/Eaton true-trac solution.
hey for a mopar guy i'm ok oui? non?....

Re: Everything I know about 9-Bolt Rearends!
My 9 bolt was total rebuilt last year. I get a light humming on decel. I'm going to change the gear oil soon. I was thinking of using amsoil synthetic with the additive. I got an email from 9 bolt.com a while back and they said the additive wasn't needed but wouldn't hurt eighter.
you will microweld (friction weld and then break free in many microscopic places) the cones to the carrier 1000s of times per "slip"
this just errodes both away.
additive is necessary unless you use "LSD" "POSI" "SureGrip" ready mixed diff oil like the stuff they make for catapillar plant diffs and ford tractors
Mopar "Sure Grip" additive works and so do many others GM do one as well
the borg warner cone centre was designed for mopar 8 1/4 inch diff hence my preocupation with sure grip additive.

So, to the aussies out there:
If I buy a VN-VP commodore 9 bolt LSD rear end, can I transfer everything into the firebird housing?
are the axles the same length or do i need firebird axles?
Can i transfer the whole centre into mine and just use the current axles?

Re: Everything I know about 9-Bolt Rearends!
the VL to first half of model year VS commodore used 9 bolt rear ends with a series 2 or series 3 centre. check you can ID which is shich before purechase
with a 7.5 inch (0750 stamped) or a 7.8 (0780) inch ring gear external diameter depending on 6 or 8 cylinder
the internal diameter of the ring gear and the centre is the same
all will swap in to your axle
the axle half shafts are a different length to the firebird and camaro as far as i know
the spline is the same SAE sized 28 spline, spline as used on the 28 spline ford 9 inch and the firebird and camaro 9 bolts
i'm a pom not an aussie
try contacting motospecs
http://www.motospecs.com.au/

with a 7.5 inch (0750 stamped) or a 7.8 (0780) inch ring gear external diameter depending on 6 or 8 cylinder
the internal diameter of the ring gear and the centre is the same
all will swap in to your axle
the axle half shafts are a different length to the firebird and camaro as far as i know
the spline is the same SAE sized 28 spline, spline as used on the 28 spline ford 9 inch and the firebird and camaro 9 bolts

Re: HISTORY & APPLICATIONS:
The Borg Warner 9 Bolt Rearend is actually called the M78 Rearend or "78 series". It has been made since the late 60's in Australia by a company called BTR Engineering Ltd. BTR was bought out by Borg-Warner under which company name the rears were produced for our cars. In the last few years Borg-Warner was bought out by Dana Corp. and the rears are still produced by Dana today in the same BTR factory under the "Spicer Axles Australia" name. www.spiceraxle.com.au/products.htm#srd
The rear is offically rated @ 220 kW = 295 HP
@ 435 Nm = 320 lb/ft
It can support a GVW of 2740 kg = 6041 lbs
The above ratings seem to be a bit conservative, as one member I know of has one that has survived the abuse of a 500hp/500+ lb/ft Big Block for a few years now. The 9 bolt offers a few advantages over a 7.625" 10 Bolt: 4 pinion spider gear design, shorter distance between carrier bearing caps, and a 7.75" ring gear diameter adds strength.
All 9 bolt rears for f-bodies use 28 spline axles.
Another advantage over the 10 bolt is it uses pressed on tapered axle bearings allowing the axles to be bolted in instead of using c-clips. I've heard several people say the 9bolt is stronger than the Dana 44. I do not believe this because in my many years of research, I've never seen one shred of FACT to support it. The dana 44 uses bolt in axles and has a larger 8.5" dia. ring gear versus the 9 bolts 7.75" dia. ring gear. Most, if not all Posi Dana 44's built for camaro's were 4 pinion versions also. Dana 44's were used by GM as service/warranty replacements for problematic 9 and 10 bolt rears, then offered them thru GM Performance Parts, and they were then used on the 91-92 firehawks if that tells you anything.
85-90 9 bolt equipped f-bodies were available with either standard open differentials or limited slip versions as well as several different ratios including: 2.77, 3.08, 3.27 (G92 w/auto), 3.45 (G92 w/stick), and a few 3.70 ratio's came in some 85 & 86 Firebird's w/ RPO Option Codes L69 (305 "High Output" Carb Engine), 5 speed trans, & G92 =Very Rare!
3.27 and numerically higher gears will not fit on 3.08 and numerically down carriers. If you have a 2.77 or 3.08 rear and want 3.27 or higher you will have to get a 3 series carrier. www.9bolt.com.
The "Limited Slip" or "posi" rears used on f-bodies used what is called the "Seperated Cone Slip Resistant Differential".
They also make a better version called the Hydratrak SRD but it uses a different spline count on the axles preventing it from being a direct swap into our rears
Vehicles originally equipped with the 9 bolt rear:
Australian made cars: Certain models of Ford Falcons since 1971, Holden Commodores from 1986 thru 1991, Chrysler Valiants since 1971, certain Aussie made Toyota Corrollas & Coronas, Nissan R31 Skylines/Pintaras & certian Datsun's, Mitsubishi Sigmas, Leyland P76s ...1997-up Morgan Plus 8s have the Hydratrak version. In the UK the rears were used on certain Vauxhall models and Jensen-Healey's.
I've also heard that Ford uses the 9 bolt center section in their Escapes and Mazda Tributes, but I haven't verified it yet.
The Nissan Austraila PN for 3.9 gears is 38100-J7100
3.7 gears were used in R31 Skylines with manual trans, the PN for those gears is 38100-J7110
4.1 gears were used in R31 Pintara's (manual or auto) and the PN is 38100-J7000
Holden's and Fords got nothing shorter than 3.45 gears AFAIK.
In 1998 the Australian magazine "Street Machine" did a series of articles on this rear axle, Another member has posted it somewhere in the thread below.

Re: HISTORY & APPLICATIONS:
No. Negative. That is wrong information. The difference in the thickness of the different "series" ring gears is way too much to accommodate with shims/spacers. It is true that there are different carriers for the different ratio ranges...and you need the right carrier for the corresponding gear ratio range.

Re: Everything I know about 9-Bolt Rearends!
If it's Series 2 you need the "thick" gear set. If I remember correctly one half of the carrier is the same on both series but the other is smaller on the series 2 hence the thicker gear to make up the difference.

Re: Everything I know about 9-Bolt Rearends!
As you go numerically lower in gear ratios, the pinion gear getss "bigger"....larger in diameter. This requires that the ring gear move to the left. This is accomplished w/in a series, by ring gear thickness. At some point (as you go down numerically in gear ratios), the ring gear gets too thin and you move to another "series" where the ring gear flange on the diff carrier moves to the left...and you start at the (numerically) top of that series with a thick gear again.
A "2 series" gear may be as thick as a gear from a "3 series". The diff carrier will be different.

Re: Everything I know about 9-Bolt Rearends!
I am desperate to find a 9 bolt posi 3.27 - 3.45 ratio carrier w ring and pinion, my pinion and ring are good but I heard it has to be the same set you can't mix and match?
I am in Canada. does anyone have a good lead?
Thanks
Chris

Re: Everything I know about 9-Bolt Rearends!
Not mixing and matching is about ring and pinion gears, meaning, you cant just take any 3.27 ring and mate it to any 3.27 pinion, just because they are the same ratio isnt enough, they need to be a matched set to operate as smoothly as possible.
BUT, you can put any series 3 gearset on any series 3 carrier, and any series 2 gearset on any series 2 carrier.

Found a 9 bolt rear end! its a little sloppy but its still good, its around 20 ft lbs as long as im not doing burnouts and what not it should last till i can yank it out in a couple months and rebuild it or get a new one right?

Re: Everything I know about 9-Bolt Rearends!
Another 9 bolt needs help.
Pulled the axle from the '86 T/A parts car for my '91 and found it has almost no posi action. (Dump the clutch and you'll spin both for 5 feet or so, then one wheel from there. No posi action during cornering)
Took it apart to find worn cones (no surprise). The case looks OK, the cone ends just barely kissed it.
My question is machining. How much and at what parts of the cone? What do I tell the machinist?

Okay so the cones have a taper to them. Meaning of the flat end one has more diameter than the other. The idea is to machine off the smaller end. The posi unit uses springs in the middle to force the cones toward the outside which uses friction to grab the sides of the case causing the axles to lock since the cones are also splined to fit the axles. As for how much it just depends on how bad the cones are. Obviously It will need to use shims to take up the additional slack. There is a post here that discusses the window and spacing that should be used. Posted from Thirdgen.org App for Android

Re: Everything I know about 9-Bolt Rearends!
ok, I machined the cones .030. When fitting the crossshaft, it rocks a tiny bit even without anything under it. I suspect it's bent. Tried different positions and same result from the same arm. I think I'll have to live with it even though it's certainly not ideal.
Whats the typical amount of shims used here? .070 and no difference yet...

As far as shims you will just have to add til it is tight. I did one cone with the cross shaft and spiders in place and then the other. This got me close. But the total shim was less because doing one side at a time doesn't take into account the play in the spider gears. Also, it is helpful to have everything clean and dry when checking clearance. With everything "close" and it bolted together I was able to feel and hear the side clearances. I got it to just about "0" clearance.
One final note, if you set it up tight you may notice some popping and clunking in turns. Make sure you use the GM additive. The part number is somewhere on this forum. But if you go to the parts counter they have it. It's well worth the $8.
