Stock steering column and rack, anyone?

Does anyone have a stock steering column (double D shaft) and going to a rack? (3/4" shaft)
Have any pics?
Did you use 2 or 3 u-joints?

Re: Stock steering column and rack, anyone?

This is the kit that I got from Racecraft

The 1st pic, the u-joint is hooked to the rack, then to the 3/4" hollow shaft.

It's looking like I need a 3rd u-joint and a heim joint, to stabilize the shaft, to get the proper angles to go around the headers.

Time to fab more stuff....

Re: Stock steering column and rack, anyone?

I have the steering shaft almost done
Had to cut off the end of the stock column, then put in the coupler to attach to the 3/4" smooth u-joint.

Here is it, in place, just have to finish welding the shaft up.

Here is the plate to get welded to the frame, so that it will hold the rod end, to keep the shaft in place

Can you add a couple of shots of the rack itself?

Re: Stock steering column and rack, anyone?

I'm just getting around to preparing to install my rack. I have double D style shafts and Flaming River rack and 2 universal joints and a support heim.. What I'm lacking is the universal joint that you used at the column. Where did you get that joint? It looks like it's got a number on it but I can't see all of it. I'm wanting to attach to my column and use my double D style shafts.

Re: Stock steering column and rack, anyone?

I got all stuff from RaceCraft.
This is what I used
https://www.racecraft.com/steering-s...mn-p-1449.html
They recommended this for more street driving

They also have this for more strictly drag racing applications

Re: Stock steering column and rack, anyone?

thanks for the links. I see the kits require cutting the column and then sliding that piece in the tube. I've messaged Flaming River and from what I understand there is a joint with a 1" double D that will slide up on the factory column end without cutting it. One of the 3/4" double D shafts I have is drilled through and I believe it will slide up into the end of the factory column if you didn't want to use a u-joint. I prefer a joint at the column like you used and I have the heim for the support.

Re: Stock steering column and rack, anyone?

I messaged Racecraft and they recommended the joint you have which requires cutting the bottom of the column shaft. I also messaged Borgeson and Flaming River and they say the 1" Double D Joint will fit the column without cutting. I do like the Racecraft setup with the piece that slides inside the column. I think I can do the same with a piece of 3/4" Double D shaft inside the column and use the 1" Double D that slides up on the existing shaft without cutting.
