Nice opinion you have there. And thank you for the insult.
Do you even understand what it take to make customs fender flares, I don't think you do. You can't just order these and stick them on. I've got over 100 hours in mine so far and many more to go,

Thank you, Its a lot of work and a long way until it's done. I won't do a build thread until I'm finished or close to it, But I keep everything documented and lots of pics.
Twin_Turbo, I'm not to worried about what that person thinks, They have there right to there own opinion, And you know what they say about them. It was how they stated it making them look like an opinion.

If it help at all, im doing a widebody build thread with flares, 4"over on rear and 2"over on fronts. Check last past for last weeks update, should be in primer week or so.
Just a thought for the builtnotbought crowd.

Re: Fender Flares on a third gen
I'm unsure when I'll be finished with this project, I just have so many other projects like 2 motor homes both big block chevys getting fuel injection and turbos, I have a sail boat and a ski boat to work on, just finished putting a motor in the ski boat, and all those are for one customer, well one motor home is mine, and what I am using to design everything for my customer, since they are the same exact vintage RV, So my Trans Am is last on the list of things to get done, but I did just buy a new roll of fiberglass so I'll be doing some more work on the TA, I'm not happy with how my hood turned out last time so I'll be making a new one, A little thicker this time and hopefully the ZL1 cowl will be right this time,

That looks great on your car and you can fit some really wide tires under there, And with what you're doing with your car I'm sure you could use them.

Re: Fender Flares on a third gen
Ye but the pics don't really show the front of the cowl at its widest point and how as you look up the cowl towards the windshield it goes in an 8th of an inch on each side, This was caused by the hood being curved as firebirds hoods are, So I'm going to modify this one for a plug, then make a new mold. and then a new hood.
It has to be right for what I plan on doing for the paint and simple grafixs.

I have emailed that used car place about 3 times trying to get info about this car and if there is wiggle room on the price.
I like what you guys are doing in here. Keep the ideas bouncing and trial and error until you get it right. Haters keep hating. Its just motivation for an even better end result.

So, nobody has brought up wheel sizes yet. If a guy wanted to run a 15" wheel.... Rears 10-12" wide? 4-5" BS? Fronts 10" wide with a standard 4" BS? Probably have to do some sort of spacer to get it perfect once the flare was built.
I'm only guessing. It's been several years since I researched widths, BS and tire sizes to stuff some tires under my Caprice.

15x10 on rears will fit with 5.5" back spacing. Yes, they come close to the fender but do not touch with the correct tire.
15x10 with 6.5" backspacing will fit also if you shave the bump stop, trim some metal, and tap the front edge of the fender well with a hammer.
Depending on the rear fender flares you might get away with a 15x12 with 5.5" or 6.5" back spacing. At that point your backspacing wouldn't change you'd just be increasing the rim width to bring it as close as you could to the outside.
I think there would be a point that looking cool would become looking like a car with messed up backspacing trying to use flares to be legal.

Honestly, if you are going to flare the fenders, don't even waste an ounce of time on the 15" wheels - they are extremely limited in both tire patterns and also brake clearance.
If you are serious, step right into the 18" wheel club - a stock 3rd gen can run 295-35-18 tires on 10.5" wide wheels without any problems. Add 2" of flare allows a 12.5" wheel and a 335 width tire. 335 on all 4 corners with the right suspension is a world beater...

Re: Fender Flares on a third gen
okay, i have decided i am most likely going to drop the custom fabbed fender flares. tires would cost a fortune, and so do the rims. i am going to get some custom fiberglass fender skins that extend the wheel wells out 1.5 inches. since i can already fit 9.5 inch rims all around without any modification,,,or so i have heard, i am going to get 4 deep dish corvette zr1 wheels. hyper silver. 17x11. i just dont know what spacers to run though. is there a way i can measure what spacer size i need?

I'm sure you have checked the wheel and tire section but there are plenty of post about this size wheels and back spacing.

Well I had to share, think I posted couple months ago I was in mist of doing something like the fender flair/wide body. I have a pretty detail thread for those who are interested, but I have 2" up front, nose is about 2" total but not much to mention. Rear is 4" over total, 2" in quaters withba 2"flair at too apex, 3.5" on aprons making a 2" total at taillights and rear bumper.
Last two pics are after 4tg gean rear swap (should be noted) as the others are prior.
After swap I don't have much to kill, and am looking for rims now, key is offset, corvette rims seemed like best bet at first, but after really looking and tryn a few on, there are maybe one or two stock sets I even consider. Two reasons, one...there are flat face rims and actually kills the wide look plus your not really getting out of the stock lip area, just wider tread under car.
Two....cost, might as well grab a set of MMT (I think there called,) aftermarket corvette rims and still, not out of the well...by much, the rear helps big time but still not enough for what your adding (if you rearlly add width to car and not reshape the fender/quarters to look flaired)
But old school welds or craigs, now....have offset, which get out from under car and the lip....ampifies the appearance of depth.....it'll look deep n wider, plus you can still get in 10" width which kills the rear, skinny jean look....
Unless you wanna spend the money for CCW rims....ahhhhhhhh....sexy....but they are worth more then my whole car and if I had that budget, I'd....probably do it...,
So, trick is wider =; offset....

If the op isn't done yet, maybe try vents in the fenders like the new c7's. Make it a little more aerodynamic.

I would LOVE to get my hands on a set of these. The biggest downside to these is availability. As in, I've never seen a set for sale. You've found lots of weird stuff, have you seen them for sale?

If it takes me 100+ hours to take a ****, that doesn't make it pretty. Fender flares and side pipes are the two things on the list of "Cool Car Aesthetics that Don't Belong on a Thirdgen". They are just ugly. Don't want to flame anyone, it's your car do with it what you wish, but if someone posted up "How to make 22's fit on a thirdgen", you know darn well we'd have 90% of this site telling them how disgusting and stupid it would be on a thirdgen, not to mention tasteless. Same thing here.

Now it's OK if you don't like fender flares but that is all you would need to say if anything, So are you here just to bash peoples ideas and cars or are you going to contribute in a positive, helpful and creative way?
