Fuel Cell size and location

wishing to add a fuel cell to my 1991 rebuild any ideas on best size and location? i'd prefer to locate it in original location but have concerns about size and suspension travel ( cell hitting rear )

thank you

Re: Fuel Cell size and location

I am building a fuel cell that fits in the luggage area. It should hold about 16 gal. It will have a sump that sticks out through the bottom. I am also thinking about adding a neck on the side to utilize the factory fuel door. I still need to design a lid to cover it once its installed. This is a picture of what I have started. It looks like a mini truck toolbox.

Nice design. Honestly since there is limited fuel cell options on these cars you could easily sell those.

Re: Fuel Cell size and location

Thanks. I will see how it turns out. Im not sure what kind of liability would be involved with a fuel cell. I was going to order the street kit from ed quay. I think its only 11gal though. I wanted something that would be closer to the stock tank in capacity.

Re: Fuel Cell size and location

You planning on putting some type of firewall between the top of the fuel cell and the interior of the car?

Re: Fuel Cell size and location

Yes. Once the cell is finished I will work on a firewall to separate it from the driver. With using the factory fuel door location to fill the tank. It will eliminate the possibility of spilling fuel inside the car while filling the cell.

This blog shows my fuel cell and the hole cut for it. I am building a sheet steel box that will line the hold, house the cell, and have a firewall lid for the rules. I will have pictues of the box on there soon.

Re: Fuel Cell size and location

I think a fourth gen tank will fit our cars, which stands to reason a 4th gen cell also would. There is one here: http://www.nastyperformance.com/93-97F-Body.html. It might take a little modification, but I would think it would work. I don't know of the quality of this company or their products, but I have thought about this for the formy, just haven't gotten that far with it yet. Anybody try one? it's got to be easier than trying to build your own. Ryan

Re: Fuel Cell size and location

I got a fuel cell in my car. It is SUPER not legal though as it is in the cabin with me. I cut a hole in the floor and made a cover. Maybe someday I will weld a cover over it and add some sort of door for safety... No idea. It is a 15 gallon cell from summit.

Re: Fuel Cell size and location

I saw a aluminum fuel cell in 91-2 firehawk a few weeks ago. It was in the stock location.

I've always wanted to remove the deep well in the trunk and make it flat across the fram rails and then build a monster 25 gall cell under the car that uses the factory fuel neck and twin intank monster pumps..
I just couldnt bring myself to cut up my car..

Just an FYI guys you can make a removable cover for the fuel cell. A few local guys have covers that are removable with zues connectors.

Why sump it? Tthe factory tank is a wedge. I just drilled a hole and added a short bulkhead before I had a cell.

Obviously you don't know vary much about race cars. If you don't sump the tank how will you ever raise the coolness factor about the car? I don't know about you but coolness of a car is allot more important the functionality.

I will get some pics of mine posted tomorrow. I did exactly this same thing. I didn't use twin in tank pumps, I'm using an A1000 external setup.

If I'm not mistaken I think BlueBeast did something similar to his car. Don't quote me though.

Re: Fuel Cell size and location

Mine. With piano hinged lid and 3m weatherstripping around it to make it as air tight as possible. Theres more at my blog. The passenger side corner got kind of screwed up so I'm going to get those like leather breif case end caps to make them nice.

I had to rattle can black so no rust tries to pop up on me in the mean time before I get time to paint the car. It sits on top of the panhard top brace. And the locating tabs on the sides are bolted through.
22guage steel. .033'' thick. Made it to nhra spec which is min .028 I believe.

Re: Fuel Cell size and location

I have been wrestling with this idea for a while. There is a company that makes a sumped aluminum cell that is made to fit our cars, but I cannot recall the company... Gotta be NHRA legal...

Re: Fuel Cell size and location

Here is a pic of my approach to the fuel cell problem. I did have to cut out the well and sheet over it but, I gained alot of area underneath. The bars actually hold the tank up against the bottom of the car. I added four tabs on the corners just for piece of mind. It's still in the construction phase so please excuse the mess.

Thats pretty slick, where did you get that cell and what size is it?
and are you nhra compliant? Those rules on thickness

I had the cell custom built so I'm not sure on the capacity. It was built with .120 wall aluminum so I'm sure that it is strong enough. I would think that it should be NHRA compliant. It's basically in the stock location and not inside the cabin of the car. The cell does not hang below any part of the chassis or body. I'll have to read the rule book to see though.
