That is one WILD set up, how much more HP would a system like this give you and what about turbo lag have you done anything to compensate for it

Re: Some turbo tubing fab.

i can't really tell if thats a radiator or intercooler but, are you really gonna keep it mounted that way? it's a pretty different idea.

Re: Some turbo tubing fab.

All the tubing is actually just aluminized steel. I've used the stuff last year with the turbo without issue as seen in my sig, so why not again?

With the lag, it should be better than it was last year, which it was actually not bad to begin with. The design and that the motor is bigger than last year 385 vs. 400 should help as well. I have a "spool valve" I'm puting before the turbo that a buddy help me make. That makes for a poor mans variable geometry turbo, and seems I've seen others say it spools 500rpm sooner. I'm going to wrap all of the pre-turbo pipes more to keep the underhood temps down, but should also help spooling. Been tossing around the idea of making variable valve timing too, which by itself could make for great spooling and great top-end power all in one. I'm using the same turbo as last year, so overall power potential shouldn't really be much different other than the setup around it being nicer, the turbo being rated for something like 1500-1600hp.

That would be the radiator you see there in its final position. I'll probably be adding some shrouding/deflecting stuff to it either from want or need, but time will tell that story. I do at least know that I have enough fan on it for as much stoplight traffic as you could ever see. It's the temps at speed is what is questionable.

Re: Some turbo tubing fab.

I'm not sure just how well that rad design will work. You have the turbo and all the hot tubing directly above the rad so the fan can blow that heat over the rad.

Re: Some turbo tubing fab.

that's going to be interesting to see how a horizontal radiator will do. how will you fill it up? probably by the overflow tank right? I've found turbo lag is never as bad as everyone thinks it will be. actually it's kinda fun for just driving around.

Re: Some turbo tubing fab.

Horizontal rads are easy. Many dragsters have them mounted under the frame rails or overtop of the transmission. You could mount one under the back of the car if you want and draw the air from under the car to cool it. Plumbing is just a little more difficult.

When mounted in a non standard way, the fill neck is usually at the thermostat housing. Rads in many modern cars don't even have a fill attachment on them. They're tucked away behind the grill and rad support and there's a remote surge tank/reservoir with some sort of rad cap on it. It's also possible to install a fill cap tube in the upper rad hose.

Re: Some turbo tubing fab.

The fans will actually be pulling air upwards through the radiator so there will be no extra heat induced into that air by anything but the road surface. I'll probably do what I did last year and just fill it up at the water neck since it has just a couple bolts and an o-ring seal anyway.

With the trans brake, lag isn't too much of an issue and it'll be setup to launch with 3-6psi depending on traction.

Re: Some turbo tubing fab.

Last years best was a 9.42@ 142, but it should easily top that with what I've done since then. I got a new converter in it and only got to use it a couple times with engine troubles while still gaining 4mph at the 1/8mile. There's going to be a few days at the track where they'll have a street car 8.90 class that I'd like to be in and normally run 9.0s like nothing. Theoretically there's enough turbo there to go at least mid 8's if I push it.

Thats a badass car you got there. I remember watching you build the car up before over on fbody.com That pic in your sig makes your motor look tiny compared to the turbo

I really like the set up , have you been fabricating turbos for a while with trial and error in your set ups

Re: Some turbo tubing fab.

I've just been playing with the car since 2004.
'04: I had the 305 ran mid 14's
'05: 383 ran upper 12's
'06: fine tuned the 383 to run mid 11's
'07: Procharged 10psi to run lower 10's
'08: lower compression and 15psi to run mid 9's
'09: Turbo setup in sig best of 9.44

Re: Some turbo tubing fab.

yeah on the trans brake and 400 cubes, it should leave pretty hard and have little lag. Very nicely done so far. Subscribed
That is a big single turbo, its hard to package big singles in these cars. Hope you dont have overheating issues. Insulate things well and use some of that heatsheilding material. Really helps protect things

hmm....you say the overflow tank has the radiator cap on it on some applications? if that's the case you've taught me a little bit more about my 2002 malibu

I guess I never felt my turbo stuff was ever 100% last year since I don't have a video of that, but how about a dyno from last year:
