home made torque arm mount

home made torque arm mount
ive searched for hours and cant find much, so here it is.
i keep breaking trans mounts big surprise right, if its from the torque arm yanking up on it then, what if i was to fab up a solid mount for the torque arm? take the load off the tail shaft, i think if i just solid mount the trans it will break the tail shaft.
dosent seem too hard to do rather than spend big bucks on a kit from summit
has anyone done this? if so do you have pics?
any input would be greatly appreciated i will post pics if i build mine

pick up a poly trans mount, it will hold up a lot better than stock.
if the car has more power than stock and that why things are breaking, it would be a good idea to relocate the arm from the trans.

You can fabricate something to move the torque arm off the transmission but the factory torque arm is flimsy and flexes a lot anyway and isn't the best choice to use. That's why a lot of TGO members have converted to an aftermarket torque arm. They're adjustable for the pinion angle and the front mount is moved onto a new tranny crossmember.
You can't "solid" mount the front of the torque arm. It needs to move forward and backwards as the diff rotates through it's arc. If the front mount is solid, the diff will bind. All the good aftermarket torque arms have some sort of floating front mount. The early Spohn design www.spohn.net was a simple slip joint. He now uses a shackle.

wow cant believe ive been a member for almost a year and this is my first post.
i know about the weak arm but im laid off so i have to do this cheaply for now. ive got some plate and tubing i should be able to come up with something. might just beef up the arm some while im there, thanks for the help folks

well here it is dont hate its a first attempt and i have another cross member it seems pretty good, it did move the pinion angle down a bit but no adverse effects

Sorry bud, but thats full of fail. The stamped stock cross memeber has almost no torsional rigidity.. itll twist that up in a hurry. Do no run that! start from scratch with some square tubing. take a good look at some of the manufactures like BMR and Spohn.

i would use that one you have to make sure it will work, then take that spare cross member and reinforce the sh*t out of it; fill in all of the holes with some 1/8" plate...or you could make a new one out of some steel tubing and just use your idea for measurements (i would lean toward this option). just use your head and try to make it as strong as possible so you dont have more problems. if you can post up some better pics; it might help us see what you've got going on and maybe we can provide some suggestions.
