Steering Wheel Possibilities!? - Need Help

I again apologize for my lack of knowledge about cars,
i just want to be 100% sure of what i am doing before i follow through and waste 200 bucks.

First question, Can I attach this steering wheel to my 91 gta firebird? - http://www.jegs.com/i/Grant/470/440/10002/-1

And second, can i attach this to my steering wheel?

That kit may not work with the airbag steering column. Also, be aware: Removing the airbag is illegal in some states. (Not telling you not to do it, though.)
Good luck!

Re: Steering Wheel Possibilities!? - Need Help

I used the silver version with the kit. I had to trim 1/8 inch of the black plastic housing on my 92 column to get it to fit. Other than that, no problems.

As far as the horn button, I think a member here is using that. Or maybe just a stick-on emblem.

I thought I heard that the shaft on the airbag column was different on an airbag car.... Glad it's not though!
Good luck and post some pics when you have it installed!

Re: Steering Wheel Possibilities!? - Need Help

No unfortunetly the steering wheel dosnt have much of anything to do with steering responciveness. If everything is in good working order the only way to simply improve the steering responcivness is with a "quick ratio" steering box unless you have one already. What it is is a steering box with a different set of gears in it that allows you to turn the steering wheel less to achieve the same movement of the wheels when compared to a regular steering box. That being said these are old cars and its not uncommon to have the front suspention/steering box alittle worn out. If your complaint is that you turn the wheel more than say .5 inchs in eather direction and nothing happens in terms of the car steering somethings worn out and needs to be repaired to tighten things up.

I drove my friends cobalt, and the steering response on that made me want to tighten it, because it makes for a better ride imo

But yea i love how on this site everyone is a mechanical genius.

Re: Steering Wheel Possibilities!? - Need Help

yes, it is...
I always hatted my horn button, the one that came with the steering wheel. Mine kept popping off. I bought a Grant Horn button for a GT wheel (signature series). Just to see if I could mount it... when I received it, it came with that black ring (originally silver) with the bolt holes in it. Pretty much, it has the cuttout for the signature horn button, and bolt holes, so what I did is take some bolts and BIG washers on the bottom that overlap in the actual steering wheel... and hold the ring in place and the ring holds the button in place...easy!
The only problem is for you to acquire the ring, so can try online but I'm not even sure what its called or how to look for it... What I've actually thought about doing and will try to do tomorrow if I have time, is to make a full plastic circle the size of the steering wheel hub and sandwich it in between the top section and the spacer of the wheel. Then cut out the perfect hole for the button. I think it will look cleaner... let me know if you need clarification...

Re: Steering Wheel Possibilities!? - Need Help

yup. Its the same size and dimensions of my autobots horn... I think the only mod necessary is to cut down the back of the button, but it doesn't affect performance of the horn at all...

Re: Steering Wheel Possibilities!? - Need Help

that is awesome! I am gonna do that down the road. I love to install subtle transformers/decepticon marks in a car where it looks good and not corny.
Ill probably ask u again when i do mine, lol.
