4x4 Camaro Conversion?

I know this sounds a little out there, but i have seen some third gens lifted scattered across the internet. Right now my baby is up for sale becase i am moving to the UP(michigan upper penisula) for school late august. I was just wondering of anyone out there has done this or know anyone that has. I know you can use a 80's blazer frame but have no idea in all work involved. Please let me know because i dont want to loose my camaro!

I guess that is one way of saying you don't like it.

But nobody asked for OPINIONS of the looks. We don't all hafta like the same thing.

Personally..If somebody tells me that MY idea is dumb, it just encourages me to do it that much more, with the intent to **** them off.

To the OP......We've all seen it done, but with the way some TGO treat those people, not 1 owner has ever come here & said anything about how its done.

Find one on a personal webpage or youtube & ask the owner...You won't find him here.

Re: 4x4 Camaro Conversion?

when you talk about turning a sports/muscle car into a truck - what did you expect, cheers and standing ovations?
its darn ugly - so go and buy a blazer and let someone who really wants a 3rd gen buy yours.
its not keeping you 3rd gen to turn it into a truck.
here is an idea, put it on a truck frame, cut the back off and make it into a pick up truck with a camper shell, and park it right there in front of your mobil home park.

Sad, but true.

Although id never do it to my beloved camaro i think the idea is kinda cool, i mean what could be better then sitting in a thirdgen in about 3 feet of mud? my car gets stuck on grass if theres a slope. personally though it shouldnt be done to a mint car, maybe one thats got no hope

Re: 4x4 Camaro Conversion?

what I think would be cool would be an AWD (for handling, not off road capability) camaro or firebird, ya it would be a Pita to make work, but it would handle like no other!

Re: 4x4 Camaro Conversion?

again, I would never do it to my Trans Am, but I would definitely get a beater Camaro to do it...that looks like it would be fun... There is one in my area that might be for sale...seems to be in an old car lot...

Different strokes for different folks man!

Goofy looking for sure, but I respect the effort. It takes a lot of work, even if it is just done up hillbilly style.

I would never do this to my car but maybe a beater . the yellow one looks good but the red one looks awfull . I have seen many cars put on 4x4 frames some looked good and others looked like total s*** .

Re: 4x4 Camaro Conversion?

yeah, those no longer qualify as camaros, and they no longer fit the definition. They also suck for off-roading, as they make it hard to see the trail immediately ahead of the front wheels.

Re: 4x4 Camaro Conversion?

The red one is too high for the tires. With solid axles, ground clearance is very limited. To lift the axles up, you put taller tires on it. To fit taller tires, you lift the body up with a suspension or body lift. Those solid axles won't have much wheel travel so it's unlikely taller tires will ever hit the fenders.

You can see the lift blocks under the front and rear springs. Although it's common to do a lift on the rear springs with lift blocks, it's a no-no to do it on the front. Properly arched springs should have been used.

Re: 4x4 Camaro Conversion?

looking at the above pics makes me think about when I was a kid, I think I had some HotWheels or Matchbox cars that were like that...all they need is a front ramming bar and big metal bumper on the back! nontheless I would DEFINITELY drive that around and still make it fast...

Re: 4x4 Camaro Conversion?

I have to agree that most do look terrible, but then again i dont want to loose my baby. i know it would not be much of a camaro anymore but still would hold value for me. has anyone converted to AWD in a third gen?

I already knew this thread existed, I just needed the URL. A "search: for 'AWD' turned it up....

Re: 4x4 Camaro Conversion?

I've seen a 2nd gen that was done sitting along the interstate near Twin Falls ID.

Personally if I was going to do this kind of conversion it would be to a Ranchero/El Camino/Sprint/Caballero.

I think most who perform the conversions don't really do things the right way anyways. lol

If I did it, it would be with a Subaru powertrain so you could keep it relatively stock looking. Much $$$ though.

That red one is on a Ford frame, or so the left rear wheel looks like a late 80 early 90's ford wheel

Re: 4x4 Camaro Conversion?

see, i can let things slide like crossing american muscle with import street tuning, because its still a car, and still a camaro more importantly, but when you lift one off of the ground. its no longer a car... and am i the only one that realizes that a Camaro's POV is positioned way too far back behind the front wheel base to make an effective off road vehicle? if your going to butcher a beatiful creation just sell it to someone who will make it a work of art... go do like the "thugs" are doing these days and put an 8 foot lift on an impala

It's probably not all that difficult. I am sure 90% of them are just K5 frames with Camaro bodies stripped down and bolted on with custom fabricated body mounts. Seems simple enough.
