Re: cutting fiberglass
cutoff wheel works good.
Tried a jigsaw one time cuz i didnt want the garage full of dust, but it puts to much force up and down and can start ripping the cloth up off your surface you bonded it to.

Cutoff wheel is the only way to go.
Unless you like to itch and cough alot I would recommend long sleeves and at minimum a surgical style mask when doing the cutting.

Re: cutting fiberglass
I wouldn't use that method. They have bits kind of like that roto-zip, they are kind of like drill bits, but you can cut through drywall, wood, fiber glass or damn near any material, it doesn't cut up the hood at all, it comes out great. This is the same way a lot of body guys cut fiberglass or drag racers for doing the same type of work on the 'glass hoods.
My dad and I did it on his 68 GTO, cut a whole right through the hood, for the 11" K&N ontop of his 1050 dominator, and just put some plastic stuff they had at autozone around it, to keep it smooth, since its around the air filter, it looked great, check it out, go to www.cardomain.com/ride/471099 and go to my dad's 68 GTO page I made for him.

Re: cutting fiberglass
Its like edging, basically the same stuff a lot of cars come with from the factory. It is in the shape of a U, and they usually havce it around the doors, where the door for the car opens, so you don't oen it into things. But we used it for the space around the air filter. It isn't expensive. I believe they called it door edge molding.

Re: cutting fiberglass
Has to be something high-speed. Cutoff wheel, die grinder, etc are all good. Hacksaw, etc is bad.

Re: cutting fiberglass
a small note of caution . corners of cut-out area should be rounded , not a 90 degree cut . 90 degree cuts on a semi-flexible surface are an invitation for cracks to form . good luck .

Re: cutting fiberglass
That door edge molding is to go over anything, but its better suited for rouned curves and edges, not square edges or 90* turns. It worked great on my dad's GTO, did you look at it?

Re: cutting fiberglass
I did my hole today, as seen below, i nicked it a few times, no biggy. I tried the door moulding but i would have to cut a bigger, rounded hole for it to work and then i wasnt sure if it looked ok. I will just leave it as is for now until I come across something else that would trim those sharp edges, oval just didnt look good, thanks for the idea though.

Re: cutting fiberglass
I'd worry about it cracking in the future with the square edges but it looks like a good cut.

Well our whole for the 11" element, was just a circle, no oval.

Re: cutting fiberglass
Find a Eclipse in the junkyard & cut the fake bulge out of the hood, then weld that into your hood to prevent rain & crap from getting in.

Re: cutting fiberglass
ya there are some epoxies out there that would probably work good... but thats kinda what i was thinking to, find a stock hood with a buldge on it, or even get a small scoop and put it reverse or whatver looks in place on that car...

Re: cutting fiberglass
You could always get some foam to build your mold, 'glass what you want, pull it, and 'glass that onto the hood...

Re: cutting fiberglass
i would consider any kind of bulge if I can make it look good next to that 2" cowl.
the edges are not squared completely, it has a round edge to it.

Re: cutting fiberglass
but the secret anti-itch solution is covering your arms in talcom powder it seals your pores and makes it easier to wash the fiberglass off after. OHH YA one more thing cold shower, take a cold shower hot showers make the itching worse because hot steam opens your pores.
