Re: i wana sump my fuel tank
what do you mean by sump? Do you mean baffles? so when your gas is low and you turn hard, you wont get fuel starvation? If so, then 4th gen tanks have baffles in them... If not, explain what you mean...

Re: i wana sump my fuel tank
Are you referring to ordering a sump kit from Jeg's to run braided SS lines from the tank up to the engine compartment? If so I am in the process of having this done to my tank, just waiting to get it back from having it cleaned.

Re: i wana sump my fuel tank
haven't seen too many factory tanks sumped. You could easily do it with a BRAND NEW tank, but I would not risk working on a used tank that had fuel in it already. DON'T DO IT!
with a fresh clean tank, there are different methods to use, if the tank was flat on the bottom, (it's not) you could use a moroso sump pan, which would require you to drill some big holes in the bottom, and then weld on the pan and this would give you the sumped connections.
for an f-body tank, you could probably just drill a hole at the lowest point and weld in an AN adapter fitting. NOT on a used tank.

I did this to mine. I took the original tank to a radiator shop and they boiled it clean. I cut a square hole out with a cut-off wheel and had no problems. I've heard that you could run a hose from the tailpipe of a running vehicle in to the tank's fill neck. The lack of oxygen will prevent explosion. I never tried this though.

Re: i wana sump my fuel tank
getting it boiled out by a radiator shop is a good way to go, but the best way to actually do this is to mark out the location for the sump and then instead of cutting the whole piece out drilling a few holes in the area where the sump will be welded. The result will be that the original tank floor will act like a baffle preventing the gas from sloshing out of the sump.

Re: i wana sump my fuel tank
I had my used tank sumped. There was no reason to buy a new tank mine was in good shape, i just filled it with water and soap for about 3-4 days and rinsed it out well then had a shop weld it in. The sump is from Summit. No problems what so ever. There was no smell of gas after cleaning it out. Results:

Re: i wana sump my fuel tank
Just pour the gas out, and throw a match in it. The tank won't get wet, and the "poof" burns off the remaining fumes. A buddy of mine, and I, tried to "blow up" a junk gas tank, that had gas in it. It was a non-spectacular sight.

I just put a bulk head fitting I the lowest part of my tank. I never had an issue and ran my fastest time with the tank that way.

Re: i wana sump my fuel tank
What size bulk head fitting did you use for the guy? I will be running a Holley projection unit and don't want to hide the fuel pump in the tank. TIA.

Used a bulk head fitting on mine works fine in a straight line hard turns will uncover the pickup.
tank out let size will be determined by out put of motor/ fuel pump capacity. Good luck

Re: i wana sump my fuel tank
I cut 5 holes into mine like a dice shape. Then welded on the jegs sump kit, but drilled out and welded in a -10 fitting in the center, -8 is too small can't find a pic of it right now but basically fill the tank with water through the gas filler neck and dump it out a few times then cut out your holes, then grind the tank down to bare metal and weld up the sump with the gas tank filled with water obviously.

Re: i wana sump my fuel tank
Hey xpndble, you got any pics of the sump that's in your car right now? And what kind of exhaust do you have? I want to do something similar but I am running a full exhaust with a deep muffler in the stock location and I am worried that the muffler will be too close to the sump and not allow it to work. Basically, take a look at the pics the Stevo put up and now pretend that the factory muffler is in place. Do you think that it would work? Any insight?

Re: i wana sump my fuel tank
I'm going to bring this old post back up. Just got done with a cheap sump. I used a $20 oil pan bulge instead of a $75 sump. Doesn't look the best but it's hidden and allows a muffler by shifting it 3" to the left.
I'm running dual -8 supply lines for a budget turbo 5.3 project.
