Re: how much ***** does a 305 have?

my stock 305 TBI with an exhaust cutout and open 2.73s, also with 4spd auto will peel out and wonderburn the entire 60' at the dragstrip, if im in 1st...and if i slam the gas, and it almost always chirps 2nd.

cant wait to see what she does when i get the new motor and 3.73 posi in.

I thought the "Fabrication" section is about how to make stuff up. Oh yeah I forgot we're talking about a 305 having *****. Guess you'd have to "fabricate" a good story about that! Sorry guys this is just too easy.

Re: how much ***** does a 305 have?

There is some slight more hp in the roller cammed lg4's than the earlier ones, if you go by the data provided at this site.

My lg4 has never had a problem laying rubber. It's a later one without cat as stock, so teher might be a lil more pep to it, but I would think the limited slip rear, and stock 245 tires would make more grip to make up for it. It has a 3.23 rear end btw.

Actually this is what I do for fun with the car every day. Mash the go pedal and go sideways through city intersections and such. good fun

From a standstill if you stab it, it will spin out all of first, into second, then move.

Obviously they didn't know where to spend the money. I could spend 1/2 that and make a 305 go into the 12s. My 305 is pulling around 5,500 lbs with 3.08 gears and is still quick.

Re: how much ***** does a 305 have?

Well, I swapped in a 700R4 from another F-Body(and this one isn't limp wristed). If you stab the pedal to the floor, the old bird will lay rubber for about 50-60 ft. and she'll wiggle her tail to the right and chirp for you in 2nd. This is all from an LG4 305 with 200k miles on the clock, the only mods are an Edelbrock Performer intake,Accel Super Coil,Accel module, and Flowmaster 50 series muffler. And she still got the 2.73's.

I totally agree. Port the stock 601 heads. bigger cam and better gears would have yielded better times. These guys obviously have never been to this site. lol

Yeah, mine is even faster now that I have gotten the shift points sorted out, put premium fuel in the tank, adjust the timing and fueling in the chip, and gotten a new set of tires under it. In the videos it was shifting too low, was getting ALOT of knock retard (If you listen carefully, you can actually hear it detonate on the WOT 2-3 upshift) and running too rich.

Re: how much ***** does a 305 have?

ya know last year i got pulled over for "laying over 50 ft of rubber" atleast thats what the cop said, but that was with my falken tires, i got yokohoma tires and now i cant break the grip on the ground, i mean, theyre awesome tires for that, but i wish i could smoke them a bit lol, and yes, my 305 is slow, i just replaced the ORIGINAL 1987 spark plug wires, cap and rotor, and yeah, that might have been robbing me of maybe like 15 hp cuz i can feel it now, try a total tune up of your car and see how that works, it feels great to me now, but i still cant light them up, but thats why i'm going to try to get my hadns on a junker 350 and build it up a bit

oh and by th way, incase you were wondering.........a 305 third gen CANT beat a new 6.0 GTO....just found that out tonight, so ummmm yeah if you were thinking about taht at all, yeah, it wont beat it

Re: how much ***** does a 305 have?

my 305 H.O. will smoke the tires if you punch it but that is just for fun a good car sticks to the road not slides around every corner, but the smoke show is just cool lookin btw has anyone seen those tires with pigment in the rubber so it produces colored smoke?

Re: how much ***** does a 305 have?

yeah ive seen them....i considered getting them but then i realized that ishould get actual tires, and not tires that'll give a color show if i smoke them....my yoko's get real good grip, i got pulled over by a cop for "laying atleast 20-30 ft of rubber" (i still think it was 15 tops) with my old falkens....they were such crap, these new tires get so much grip im pretty amazed by them, but like you said, a true performance car will stay glued to the road, but that is if youre going for performance, if you want to get muscle then deff get the falkens lol (too bad they'd only be good for like 10k miles, theyre such crap)

Re: how much ***** does a 305 have?

Well, performance is relative. Sure a 305 is nothing if you compare up against a 632, or any bigblock for that matter, or almost racetuned 383's and such.

But, I see it all a bit different. If you read HOTROD, in the last issues they have had this section about "commuter rods", and all seems to be 4 bangers and slant sixes.....wft is up with that? Compared to that, a 305 is pretty ballsy, especially if you add a cam and exhaust. Still no match for real muscle, but as I see it, it's an ok overall compromise for a daily driven car, instead of having that 632 chevelle collecting dust in the garage, and driving a 4 cylinder voyager to work. Well, atleast for me when I pay $7.50 a gallon for gas. Most commuter rides isnt as ballsy, especially here in europe where newer ls1's, mustangs and such are nowhere to be seen. But sure, on a racetrack or on the occational car cruise, you'll find plenty of them making the 305 look wimpy.

Re: how much ***** does a 305 have?

Tilstad is right about performance being relative. Compared to the god awful Chrysler 225 slant, or actually the even more god awful third gen 2.8 V6, the 305 makes a 3rd gen feel rocket ship propelled.

well your plain not smart........ dont post misinformation.........

a 305 with 11 to 1 dart heads , higher stall, and big cam would easily run lower 12s upper 11s depending on porting and cam selection.

anyways heres a cheap 305 build by another magazine since the 15 sec 305 that carcraft spent 5 grand on doesnt exsist.....

http://www.popularhotrodding.com/eng...o_testing.html

thats a 370hp very mild vortec headed 305 combo, expensive not realy and definetly would yeild a 12 sec timeslip.

as for a 305 having ***** from factory, yes i think the ho models did damn good for there era.

a dual cat 305 with the ho cam made 230 hp and over 300 trq. The 350 car only made 10hp more wth about 40 ft lbs more torque with the extra 45 cubes using the same overall design.

anyways back to topic i have a lb9 5 speed 89 car and it imo is far from ballsy, fun for a dd and plenty of power yes but, nowheres near what i'd consider fast and it has most all bolt ons.

currently with a set of 255/60s posi and 3.08 it will sometimes slip a bit if i punch it at a 20 mph roll but, its far from burning rubber unless i drop the clutch around 2500-3k and stand on my brakes.

Re: how much ***** does a 305 have?

FYI:

My TPI LB9 layed down 209rwhp, 287rwtq on the dyno last week. Its running a LT1 cam, manifolds, Magnaflow catback, msd igition, 3.42 gears, LS1 Al. driveshaft.

Oh, and when revving down, it shot a big fireball out the back.

Im told with headers, a good Y, and a tune, my pitiful little 305 will be running 220 - 225rwhp, 290 - 300rwtq.

Who says these things have no *****?

Cam - $20
Catback - $400 (bought it for sound)
MSD Ignition - $200
LS1 aluminum driveshaft - $100.

Re: how much ***** does a 305 have?

305 is pretty darn stout. I had a brand new 86Z28, 305 QJet, T-5 and I think a 3.08 -- but, don't quote me on that part. It was so mean off the line -- bone-stock -- that a guy in an automatic Z once asked if mine was a turbo.

I can't believe this thread is still going. Who cares how much one-legger rubber people can lay down with under 200 horsepower cars? They are still under 200 hp cars

i really doubt there all under 200 hp cars my 305 tpi went a 12.94 at 107 yesterday all motor and a 11.93 at 116 with a 100 shot on it and im pretty sure it takes a little bit more then 200hp to go a 12.9, and my car doesnt leave 50ft burnout marks maybe 20ft untill it hooks and starts pulling

Of course they are not all 200 hp cars, but a whole lot of them are. If you read the posts where people are commenting about what their stock LG4, TBI, V6, etc does for a burnout, you know what I mean.

Re: how much ***** does a 305 have?

Well, one problem could be a 25 year old car with original motor, in a time when a gallon of gas was 1.35. That was alot in 1986. Minimum wage was 3.35 and a Datsun B210 or 120 y for you folk across the lake, was 3500.00. The cars were built for economy. I have driven alot of cars. The fastest Firebird/Trans Am is definitly the 2002 Trans Am/Formula. The Formula is the sleeper, with well under 1000 made in 2002. I think it was 420 auto and 420 manual. But, if you want a fast car that spins you need to change out rear end. You could have a motor spilling out hood, but if you have a dog rear end............. Trans slipping isnt adding to you power either.
