86 z28 slicks

I am building a 86 z28 for the track and wondering have any of yall run slicks without putting tubs in...if so do you know what size fits? I will be putting a 454 big block with a poerglide trans. Also need to find out what rear end I can put in to hold the power. If any body knows a person that has built a third gen drag car please let me know . I have a bunch of questions on how to reinforce the frame

Re: 86 z28 slicks

The size of the slicks will depend on what rpm range you plan on using and the gear ratio. If building from scratch, you stuff the tallest tires possible into the wheel wells then calculate the best gearing to use those tires with the rpm range of the engine.

A 28 x 9 slick will fit with no modifications. A 28 x 10.5 should also fit. Mount them on 15 x 10 rims with 5.5" of backspace.

Slicks are measured across the tread. The sidewall of the tire will be wider. A DOT tire is measured across the sidewall. So a 10.5 slick has more tread than a 10.5 DOT tire.

Is this close enough to a drag car for you?

Re: 86 z28 slicks

what is the closest street tire to 28 x 10.5 slicks? Also would i need to change from 2.73 to 3.73 gears to run a tire that big?

yikes...2.73s with a tire that tall would be difficult...I have 3.73's and i don't want to go that tall

MT ET Street 28x12.50-15
Hoosier QTP 28x11.50-15

both are very close in size and have about a 10" tread.. about that gear, you will want at least a 4.10/4.11(depending on what rearend you use) for a 28" tire.. also depends on how fast your car goes through the traps.. faster cars(11's and faster) will want a lower number than slower cars(12+) since you want a drag car to cross the finish line near the shift point rpm..

Re: 86 z28 slicks

FWIW, the M/T 28x9 are closer to 27" tall 27.3 IIRC. With 3.73's and those slicks i am going through the top end at 5k, I need to step up to 4.10's really, but if I was pushing a little more hp then i would be closer to the 6K I need to b at.
