Hanger For Painting Misc Parts

I fabbed this little painting rack after I decided to start painting miscellaneous car parts at home and didn't have anything to hang them from. It's kind of hard to see, but it's hanging from the bicycle handle. The frame is cut from part of a chain link fence (that part that holds the fence end next to the pole). I bolted it together instead of welding since it is galvanized. I drilled four holes in one side of the triangle and inserted "S" hooks. I normally hang it from my engine hoist. It works great and I like it so much that I've decided to make a larger paint rack out of 1" angle. I was thinking of something about 6' high and 5' to 6' long. I'd mount the thing on wheels and make it fold, so that it would be easier to transport. I have a lot of friends that paint too! Anybody already build something like this? Any helpul ideas?

Yeah, I think I bought like a 50 foot spool of steel wire from Harbor Freight for like 50 cents on sale or something. I just hang stuff with that usually. Hangs stuff as heavy as a caliper so it's pretty strong.

Re: Hanger For Painting Misc Parts

I finally finished the rack I originally wanted to make (I needed to save up to buy a welder and teach myself to weld first). Yeah, if I had a tree I'd probably take advantage of that, but my place is only five years old and my trees are still pretty small. I think I might still bolt my regulator to it and add more hooks. Here it is...

I hang stuff with bailing wire or an old coat hanger, from my garage door opener beam in the center of the garage. I can hang something between 0-6" off the ground, so I can use pretty tall stuff if need be.

Re: Hanger For Painting Misc Parts

I think I have a serious problem when it comes to my car and tools, etc. that I use on it. I go waaaay over board when it comes to making tools and waaaay over board when it comes to buying parts. I swear it will never be finished at the rate I'm going. My next project is already in the works... a portable stand for the water separator/pressure regulator. Yeah, I'm probably nuts, but I'm having a good time. Thanks for all the different ideas, fellas.

Re: Hanger For Painting Misc Parts

I used to work in aviation and we'd have all sorts of racks for painting parts. But now I have a trusty hook and a bent coat hanger in my garage that i use as well as a 2X4 with a series of rods stuck in it for holding odd and tubular parts.

Yeah, being an aviation mechanic helps out a lot with ideas, etc. Now if I just had the time to work on my car I'd be all set.

Re: Hanger For Painting Misc Parts

i work at a fabrication shop and we use portable welding curtains so that we dont blind the people around us. that looks just like the frame for a portable welding curtain. yours looks like it may be a little more sturdy.

Re: Hanger For Painting Misc Parts

Yeah, I suppose I could hang a curtain from it too. I forsee many uses. I just have to figure what. I don't really intend to break it down unless I have to move it. It does take up a lot of space, though. That just means I need a bigger garage...
