Fuel Cell questions

I am considering installing a plastic fuel cell in my Iroc. The car is in pieces now, basically just a bare chassis, so I hope it will be the right time to do this.

Can somebody that has a rear mounted fuel cell post up some pics please? I did a search but could not come up with anything.

Do track regulations state that I have to have a firewall as well? I am concerned this will turn into a mess if that is the case and I want to keep the decklid operational.

I would like to try to find a tank that would hold around 10 or 12 gallons I suppose. Any tips or suggestions are welcome.

If a fuel cell is in the rear, it needs a firewall to isolate it from the driver's compartment to be track legal. Since third gens are hatchbacks, there's no easy way to do this except to just fabricate something.

Years ago when I was still running gasoline and had a cell mounted in the rear, I fabricated a firewall so that when the hatch closed, it sealed on the underside of the hatch. The firewall wasn't pretty as it was made from about 8 pieces of sheet aluminum all cut and pop rivited together. This is a 4 gallon cell.

Since then, I've moved the fuel cell to the front since I have so much removed under then hood, I have the room.

Ok then, so I will have to have a firewall then. Yeah, this makes for a real beotch then trying to do something that will look clean for street use too. Gets really tricky when considering the need to actually SEE out the back window huh?

I wonder if I could get away with inspections at the track using a bolt in firewall of sorts? I am betting that's a no-go and it needs to be welded in or riveted as you did. Add a rollbar to the mix and that makes it even more tricky!

i'd just weld a sump onto the factory tank if possible, as it's the easiest option for high fuel demands without a plastic fuel cell in the back. but it'll be another 10 pounds or so for the tank instead of a fuel cell.

someone makes a stock replacement fuel cell for 4th gens. And being that we can fit 4th gen tanks into ours i don't see why it wouldn't work. Price is steep though. I think 4-500$'s

Ok guys, thanks for the tips.

Since I don't plan on having any real monstrous motor in my car in need of huge fuel flow, I think I would be better just leaving this alone.

My tank is full of water from sitting outside improperly stored, so I was going to try to do the fuel cell project in order to create some more room under the car for a better rear exiting dual exhaust too, but it sounds like a lot of work for nothing. The weight saving thing isn't of real concern either since the stock tank is pretty light for the most part anyway. I think I will just clean up the tank and flush it out really good.

I think my time would be better spent on somthing else.

Stock tank is 25 pounds empty. That's not light.

Have any details on this?
