Fuel Cell Install ?
Ok all I have used the search button and googled the heck out of this and have cam up with very little. I am going to remove my gas tank and cut the sheet metal between the frame rails and Fab something to mount a Jaz 25"long x 17"Wide x 9"Deep Jaz 16 gallon Fuel Cell. I Know it has to be contained so that it isn't open to to passanger compartment Besides a Fuel access Door. I am looking for Suggestions on Mounting, construction, Tips and if there is any body that is proficent with NHRA Rules or a NHRA Tech around that would be helpful.
Now for the Question does the lid on the box does it have to be welded so that if I have a problem with the cell I have to cut the box apart or Can I make the Lid Fasten down with Duzs fastners. I have atached a vew Pics for viewing of what I Have found

If you get a chance to attend an NHRA divisional or national event you can look for sportsman third gens with a fuel cell in Stock eliminator.
What I intend to do (should I ever have the budget to finish the project I started 6 years ago) is mount the fuel cell so that the top is below the level of the "hump" over the rear end. At that point I can fashion a panel that dzus's in that covers from the hump to the back of the car, sealing that whole area. That way a rear mounted battery, or batteries, will be sealed also but should I need to remove the fuel cell or battery I can get the whole panel out of the way with a few quick release fasteners.
Just make sure whatever you cover it with is thick enough to pass tech (.032 steel I think but it's been a while since I've looked at a rulebook).

Here's a pic of the inside rear portion of my TA. You don't necessarily have to make a container for the fuel cell, just fab up a firewall like I did for mine. The horizontal "lid" has a piano hinge on the forward edge so you can lift it up to gain full access to the "trunk" area. With this arrangement you can more easily work on and/or maintain your fuel cell/pump/filter, battery, and kill switch. When the lid is down (as it is in the pic), the rear portion has a vertical edge which closely follows the contour of the inside of the hatch lid, and it has weatherstripping on it to make a tight seal. No Dzus fasteners to mess with, very safe, and NHRA legal. With the firewall/lid arrangement, you don't have to use a battery box either, since it is isolated also.

mike you have more pics of that setup from maybe the inside of your car looking back? i'm curious as to how it would look from the front seat. also if you have one pic from directly behind with the lid up that would be great also. thanks.

Mike, does that firewall go all the way over to the quarter panels or did you do something different there? How is it sealed and held in at that point?

xpndbl3, here's another picture with the lid partially lifted. These were taken when I put the chromoly cage in. Note the stand-offs on top of the rear cage bars, where the rear portion of the lid rests on when it's closed. I don't have any pics looking from the front seat area rearward, but with it all carpeted, it blends right in with the rest of the interior.
83 Crossfire TA, the firewall does in fact extend all the way to the quarter panels. It has all been spot welded in, and a heavy grade body seam sealer was used on all the seams. I didn't weld to the quarters though, so I used a two-part door skin adhesive here, which when the metal is prepped right, is darn near as effective as welding.

Motor City Mike I like the way it looks But I am wanting something a little Cleaner Since this will not be tubed and is a street car. So I am going to Fully In close it in a Sheet Metal Box. My Local drag strip has a forum and I posted there and the NHRA Certified Tech that Works there replied that I can use Dzus fastners or Weld All Thread or Weld Nuts to stand Offs and use Bolts to Hold the lid down. Just as long as the lid sits flush with no gaps and the fastning System is Secure no Problem.
Now I have a Question on Jaz web site it says that the 16 galllon fuel Cell is 25"L 17" W 9"D But jegs says it is 25"W 17"deep and 9" tall
If I was standing at the rear Looking into the car is 17" from the rear to the front Measurment. or side to side measurment. Hmm Maybe I will go with the 12 Gallon it is only 1.5 gallons less than the stock tank. and measures 17 x 18 x 10 it might fit my needs better.

Hey mike… any pics of how it looks by the quarters? Do you see anything from the bonded area on the outside of the quarters (usually when you bond to outside sheet mental when things get hot the parts expand at different rates and you end up seeing a seam or a low spot in the paint)?

83 Crossfire TA, while I have heard stories about this happening also (which is why many people insist on using RTV silicone for this), there is absolutely no witness marks on the outside of my quarter panels. I have bonded my wheel tubs to the qp's the same way also, with no ill effects.

My car is a street car and I enjoy having a stock body and a stock interior. I prefer to spend $500 on a gas tank like that if it bolts in the stock location. I don't like the idea of sawsalling the back end of my car and welding an enclosable box for my fuel cell, although I did plan to do it when I upgraded my fuel system if I could not find a suitable cell with a sump. That was before I found the company that makes those tanks, however.

4th Gen F-Body Aluminum Drag Race Fuel Tanks
Our drop-in aluminum fuel tanks are a direct replacement for the stock '93 - '02 fuel tank. This tank features 14 gallon capacity, TIG welded construction, built in sump with 1/2" NPT FEMALE outlet, 1/2" NPT FEMALE return fitting. Accepts the stock fuel hanger and can be used with an in-tank pump or extrenal pump. We can add your custom inlet/outlet sizes upon request. These fuel tanks are built to order, allow 2-4 weeks for construction.
93-98 LT1/LS1 CAS447 Aluminum fuel tank kit for 93 - 98 4th gen $474.99
Unfortunately I cant find much for a website from CAS themselves any more, they used to have trouble with shipping parts if you bought directly from them and it taking forever, but if you ordered from a vendor it being pretty trouble free, dont know if they just quit selling direct, which seems like the smart move from what was happening, or maybe they are gone and someone just hasnt removed the tank from the site.
Very few minor modifications are needed to install a 4th gen tank in a thirdgen.
And if you have to fight with the tank that much to get it out, you probably shouldnt be working on the car in the first place.

Well, I know that a company called Fuel Safe makes a fuel cell that bolts in place of the factory tank. I was going to use it on my car but the price is kinda high. Not sure if it's what you want but here it is.....
Camaro Racing Cells
Fuel Safe’s Camaro Racing Cells are designed to fit in the stock OEM locations without any major modifications. Mounting straps are included.
SA114 - Pro Cell (24 gal.)
