82-84 Firebird Rear Bumper Reinforcement Cushion
Hey guys ! Hope all is well.So I was told when you change the Rear Bumper from a 92-82 Firebird, you need to change the impact absorber, because the bumper would stick out too much. Any leads -? Please send me a PM
Thanks
Thanks

If your talking about putting a 92 bumper on a 82, you need to trim a little bit in the middle of the absorber on the bottom, because the license plate section of the bumper sticks in more than the older ones. It only makes it stick out maybe 1/2" total, not noticeable to an amateur, but the holes underneath won't line up. I tried this on my '88 (identical from 85-90, possibly different from 82-84), and like i said, it only stuck out 1/2" and could easily have been trimmed to fit perfectly.

Hey 84 ! Thanks for the reply
I'm changing the Rear Bumper off my 92 Firebird, to a 82 Rear Bumper. I'm aware of the gauging that needs to be done in the middle of the absorber for the 82 Rear Bumper to fit. I'm in the process of getting an absorber from a 82 Firebird, maybe aluminum

If your speaking of the crash bumper, to my knowledge only the front got the aluminum crash bumper, the rear from 82-92 were all steel. My '83 pace car has it's original aluminum front crash bumper.

Hey 84 ! So maybe I'm just confused then, lol. So on my 92, I can add the 82 Rear Bumper with no problems, and only trim down the honeycomb absorber-? What about the holes under the rear bumper, will that match up -? Thanks

Re: 82-84 Firebird Rear Bumper Reinforcement Cushion
Possibility that the 3 center holes may not match up, but I do believe the outter two may fit. Been a while since I've done it on an older car like yours, my latest venture was a 92 bumper on an '88, and the outer two holes lined up so I may have my facts confused, but yes, it should be primarily trimming the bottom center of the absorber, but I could be mistaken only because the 92 rear bumper was so fat, and I do know the absorber underneath was changed, so you may need to trim more.
I believe an '82 bumper on a 85-90 would be simpler, but in the same token, if i remember correctly, the 91/92 rear bumper was broken down into four sections. The whole thing could probably be taken care of with 5 minutes of a saws all or grinder and sliding the bumper on a few times. Sorry for my confusing ramblings, long day and its 2 am and i'm ready for bed lol.
