Does removing the cat make the car louder??

Does removing the cat make the car louder??

I currently have Hooker Headers, a high-flow 3" cat, and the 3" Flowmaster cat-back on my car (355 TPI). It sounds nice, but it's not loud enough. I was wondering how removing the cat would affect the sound. Thanks.

Yes, some. It also changes the tone.

when I took off my cat. it made the car sound mean. before it sounded like a v6 :-)

I have heard from people that removing the cat and having the Flowmaster American Thunder 3" cat back makes it sound like crap. But I don't know. Like I said, I have headers, and after a few more mods I'll be around 350 horsepower if that makes a difference in noise. I want it to sound like the old Camaros/Chevelles, etc. I love the popping/throatiness. Does it really change the volume and sound a lot? Thanks again.

If you want the popping sound then remove the cat because that is exactly what you will get.

i have 2 different cats-both the 4 bolt flange style used in 85 and i think in 84 in the ho cars. one is the original one and it has maybe 5000 miles on it, the other one is holl-wed out, which is used most frequently (daily) i am running headers too with a banks power pack exhaust. with the daily driver cat in place the car sounds so much more "crispier"-no, not like breakfast food. snappy and more huevos as an extra bonus -see food reference above- with the bi-annual necessity in place (original cat) the tone gets really muddled and power levels definitely go down. what is" popping sound", backfire? if so it aint the cat. exhaust leaks, bad a.i.r. check valves, too rich air fuel, i believe. gutting the cat alone wont cause backfiring. :lala:

I believe the popping sound he is looking for is also known as rasp. When you step on the gas, the car kind of rumbles with a "popping sound". I personally think is sound like crap, but some people like it, and removing the cat will give you that noice.

The popping I want is not backfiring. It is on practically all 60s-70s muscle cars. Maybe it is a "rasp." It is like being able to hear every cylinder fire with a very crisp throaty noise. I know everyone here has heard it. Thanks again.

GGA - I just don't care much for the pop pop pop pop. It is kind of annoying, kind of like backfiring, just annoying. I like a constant deep rumble sound. I know there a some people that like that pop pop pop, but it just doesn't sound right to me.

A lot of that pop pop pop is caused by the air pump. Mined did it when it was hooked up but when I took the belt off because it squealed it didnt pop anymore. Also, I think that if that isnt what you are talking about there is some poping that you get due to somthing with the lack of scavenging or something, I just think I remember reading about that somewhere.

I have headers 3in cat and 3in edelbrock catback. i put a straight pipe in for the cat and it sounded horrible. I put the cat back on.

mkos1980, your straight sounds like crap you say? i have a 350, and i cut
open the cat and put a straight inside to get me through inspections, and it
sounds simply mar-ve-lous! maybe you have a 305 or something different....
what do you have on your exhaust??

My 72 has goes pop, pop, pop,pop when i let off the gas. I believe it is because of too much carb. I have my friends 800+cfm rochester carb on the car because it was there and it did help a good deal in power, but it still is boggy around 40+mph when you nail it

The car sounds great with the converter. its just after my head and cam swap is when the car got too loud to go with a straight pipe.
