what long tube headers will fit on a 85 camaro with manual trans

hey wanted to put long tubes with a full exhaust on my camaro. Went to a shop that put on my sub-frame connectors, they told me that they don't make headers that will fit on the car because its manual but i saw that hookers would work just was wondering if i could get some input before purchasing them.

thank you

Id advise against it unless you have a way to make a custom exhaust and can fabricate a custom crossmember to get decent ground clearance.

But yes, the Hookers will fit. Just measure how much distance there is between your crossmember and the ground. Then subtract whatever pipe diameter you plan on using and you'll see how much clearance you have left.

I am going to bring the car to a custom exhaust shop, just want to see if i could get long tubes instead of shortys. but the car has lowing spring so it doesn't have mush ground clearance

Then your likelihood of getting a decent exhaust system with LT's dropped to 5 percent. I would get shorties for sure at this point.

DEFINITELY do shorties. It takes a lot of motivation and knowledge of workarounds to actually make long tubes work in these cars.

Most workarounds involve a lot of custom work with the crossmember and tucking pipes around the transmission. Since you have a T5, you dont want to be locked into that time bomb forever, so even a "proper" custom exhaust that tucks around the transmission in ways that shops simply will not do will be a bad idea for you because you're not going to have the T5 forever. If you do then you're not serious enough about power to warrant long tubes. Wait until you decide what you want out of the car... what engine platform, what transmission, what power level etc, and then decide if you want to do long tubes.

Like I said, go under the car, and measure the distance between the crossmember and the ground, and subtract whatever diameter pipes you're wanting to use. You will see you have almost nothing left, and if you find an exhaust shop that's even willing to make this exhaust for you, they're just going to go straight under that crossmember. There's no other way to do it without getting super creative and taking some risks.

Yup. T5 only lasted a year or two behind a mild 350. Now running a TKO and it's a larger trans.

On my 414 build I still went with shortys for all the reasons mentioned. I routed the pipes by the trans and still had to do a lot of "work arounds" to get decent ground clearance. And my car is stock height. I ended up with 4" ground clearance at the lowest points (which is actually in front of the trans x) Going with any route besides the stock location sacrifices clearance and is a lot of work.

Re: what long tube headers will fit on a 85 camaro with manual trans

Im in the process of getting headers for my 305/t5 camaro as well and have been reading lots of obvious problems with clearance. Im leaning towards the hookers but i would like the extra power from the longtubes. Hedman makes a set of lt's for our cars but i dont know what kind of modifications id need to make them fit (angled/short plugs, earlier mentioned crossmember, etc). Would they be a good fit? I plan on running them back to a catless x pipe with magnapacks. Ive got a full pack of E3's waiting to go in but im not going to install them if the headers i get wont fit them. Any info would be great! Thanks!
