Exhaust options? Prices, AIR and headers

Like many owners, I am wanting to place some headers onto my iroc. I have the 305, but it's in great condition. I have it out of the car to paint the engine bay and figured I would regasket it and do some headers.

Based on my readings: am I to understand that the Y pipe is the main problem? I don't think I have the original Y pipe...it's 3 inches wide. Not sure how to check if it's the original. I do still have manifolds.

That said, I'd also like to keep the AIR system, but I must be frugal with the money. And nearly $600 for either dyno don's or the hooker headers with AIR seems a bit steep; I do know they have a y-pipe too.

Is it ill-advised to get something like the summit racing headers, or some other below $200 set, attach the $80 hedman kit (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/he...t/model/camaro) and roll with my possibly aftermarket y-pipe?

With the summit headers and the hedman kit I'd be at $200. Even if I wanted a y-pipe, most are below $120 so then I'd still be below $400. That's $200 that can be used for other parts, tires, or vacation.

So, my question is: To keep AIR and have headers, why does no one do it this way? Are the below $200 headers that sucky?

And yes, I know, most people some how have tons of money and just buy the uber pricey stuff. But I am a poor mechanic with a family and house and beloved Camaro and I'd like to header my car without losing my house.

Thanks alot folks, I hope to learn something here and maybe be of help to others.

First time you buy anything will do, next you will want something good.

I never understand the waste of money, but I'm sure others do.

Re: Exhaust options? Prices, AIR and headers

I'm not sure I understand what you mean there Don. What I am wanting to know, is how un-wise this route I've explained would be. Or, if it would do. Mind you, it's about $200 off or so from getting your set. So, if the value, longevity, and performance of the cheaper route are much less than the alternative (Dyno Don, Hooker, ect) then I would obviously pony-up and get the better quality. I'm wanting to go a lower buck route here, but if it's not worth it then I can save up or something.

Always cheaper to save up and get the good stuff.

Remember you get what you pay for! & You usually end up spending twice as much when you try to go cheapo.

I'm personally saving up for a set of dyno dons+y-pipe. Did a lot of research on his rep & product.

BTW what in the heck is AIR?

Re: Exhaust options? Prices, AIR and headers

AIR is the smog pump stuff. Stock manifolds on camaros with the smog pump have these little tubes that route to the smog pump.

Man, I was hoping to get by with some money to save, but I guess I'll try to get those Dyno Don's. He really does have a great rep. going on.

Re: Exhaust options? Prices, AIR and headers

I don't have the smog pump anymore, so I guess I won't have to worry bout that....

& yeah its always best to just get the good stuff!
