Starter/Headers Clearance Issue
I have a set of Dyno Don's headers. My car has a 168-tooth flywheel that I'd like to keep. I purchased a mini starter from Summit, it has a 3-position adjustable mounting block. Only 1 position looks like it'll work, but when installed it's very close to the header. I also bought some of the Mylar wrap to put around the starter, but once I do I fear that it'll end up touching the header.
Is there a minimum distance needed between the header and starter? What about if the heat wrap is touching the header? Or is there a better mini starter to use with the Dyno Don's? Thanks.

Re: Starter/Headers Clearance Issue
I'm not sure about Dyno Don's headers however I found that the over the counter replacement for a 96 Chev pick-up with a 350/5.7 is very small. Smaller even that the unit that replaced the original massive Delco unit.
They've gone from the size of a large soup can, to the size of a beer can to something even smaller in diameter now.
I have pics of all three is you'd like to see them.

Yeah, pictures would be great. Would like to see how they compare to the mini starter I just purchased. Thanks.

I just so happen to have my starter off. I will take a picture later. And I have to ask, where did you find a Yuengling can in Canada? I grew up in PA.

That's the same as the "intermediate" sized starter that used to be listed for my application. Even with the ultra small unit, there was still a some interference with installing one starter bolt and the Hedman header I use. I've learned to crack the bolts loose at the head which allows enough room to get a socket on the bolt.
I like Pabst too.

Re: Starter/Headers Clearance Issue
I have 2210s and I bought a PMGR starter that clears. I also bought a CVR but it does not clear. The PMGR bends the bolts and the starter starts grinding after 5 or 6 starts. The CVR works all the time but hits the headers. I have gone through 3 flywheels and bags of factory bolts 12338064. The CVR and 88-91 Corvette gear reduction style starters seem to work the best but the PMGR starters are very good. The old huge boat anchor starters are dinosaurs.

Re: Starter/Headers Clearance Issue
The starter I bought from Summit has an adjustable mounting block. After playing around with it, I finally found a mounting position that allows the headers to be bolted up and doesn't touch the starter - however, it is very, very close to the little vent.
I plan on wrapping the starter to keep heat off of it, not sure hot to handle the vent - do I some how cut a little hole in the wrap? Or can the vent be wrapped, too?
As my starter issue is (I think) solved, the next quest is how to route the transmission cooler lines so that they clear the starter and the headers/exhaust.

Re: Starter/Headers Clearance Issue
I have Dyno Don headers and the stock "mini" starter on my '91. It wasn't close enough for me to even give it a second thought.

Re: Starter/Headers Clearance Issue
Is the stock starter the same one skinny Z mentioned above? Does this starter work for a 168-tooth flywheel or is it for the small ones?
