Trying to get the perfect exhaust note...any suggestions?
I did a search here and read the FAQ, but I feel like my question wasn't answered.
I'm trying to keep my 2.5" piping but I'm going to switch out the headers to the Hooker 2.5" comp shorty headers, cut out the cats, and remove the flowmaster 80 series that came with the car.
Personally, I like the sound produced by the 80 series, but to me the sound doesn't go with the look. When I look at the styling of the GTA, I think a sporty V8 sound to come out not the American Muscle rumble. Nothing wrong with that sound I love it just not for this car.
There a muffler out there that gives off the sporty V8 sound? When I mean sporty, I'm thinking BMW, Aston Martin, Corvette, or even Audi V8s. I know the sound is determined by the engine and how its tuned and built as well, but I want something close....maybe less of a muscle car rumble or something...hope I'm not sounding too ignorant. I was gonna go with Borla XR-1s when I was still thinking of doing a true dual setup but based on this year's budget I think I would have to back off from that until I'm ready to do a 350 swap. I was also gonna go 3" but I didn't want to lose torque so I decided to stay stock diameter. I hope you guys know what kind of sound I'm talking about.
Anyway, I know I've been posting a lot of threads around here but I'm trying to setup a list of things to do and what type/brand parts to buy so when the time comes I won't have to spend 3 hours - 2 weeks trying to find a part I like. So far I've been setting up the canvas or so to speak (ie rebuilding headlights, tune-up, replacing missing/broken parts, etc.). Almost done, so I figured now would be the perfect time to get things together. Anyway thanks for the help.
EDIT: I guess what I'm looking for is something more of a higher pitch and less of a throaty sound.

FWIW, LT1, L98 and LB9's all sound completely different through the same exhaust (I've had the same cat back on all of them)

The last exhaust I had on my 82 trans am had a sound similar to what your talking about I believe. It was Hedman longtubes 2 1/2 y pipe I built no cat 3.5in I pipe with cutout under seat an 2.75in over axle into a STOCK 01 trans am muffler with the stock oval tips. It had a higher pitched unique sound IMO. I LOVED it. Il post some videos later if wanted. I had a mild 305 in it cam intake milled 416 heads th350 and stall.

Its going to be a bit tricky but im sure its possible. You will probably need to fiddle around with different combos to make it perfect. I would suggest borla or corsa. But really you need an ls1 for a high pitch being aluminum and all.
