Oil pan that will play nice with a y-pipe?

Oil pan that will play nice with a y-pipe?
I've got a 2 piece RMS block with the driver side dipstick going into my GTA. Mockup (thanks to a warning from Dyno Don) revealed that my cheap stock-style oil pan doesn't leave room for the y-pipe to cross underneath. I could cut & modify the pan, and I could cut & modify the y-pipe, but before I do, I'd rather see if there's a plug & play option available here, i.e. an oil pan that leaves room for the y-pipe to cross over. The headers & y-pipe are Heddman. I don't remember model numbers, but they were the basic non-AIR and non-O2 sensor model.
Anybody have any oil pan recommendations? When this motor was in my IROC I had a Summit finned aluminum oil pan, and although it was snug, it DID fit. I elected to swap out this pan because having the drain plug as the lowest point of my undercarrage scares the crap out of me.
Here's a picture of the old & new oil pans, though the flash wound up making the extremes of the new pan hard to see:

Good luck finding a pan....I tried and couldn't. I found out my Y-pipe wouldn't fit the hard way.

I had to have my cross-over pipe refabricated and plan to wrap it with header wrap to keep the heat off the pan.

I dont know if they still make it but my hamburger pan has alot of room, more than the moroso one I had pm me your email and Ill get under the car with dons crosover pipe and snap a pic. Just quicker than posting it to photobucket than getting it off my galaxy 2 phone. Its a 7 quart I believe. It sits in about 1/2 inch from crossmember so no wacking it like I did with my moroso.+ You have at least 1/2 on either side of pipe to pan an to crossmember so no burning paint. Dons an excellent welder as I can see from my headers, to bad he couldnt reproduce this pan, its the nicest one Ive seen for thirdgen routing of the exhast and its a kickout deep sump.

I have run one in my car for over 20 years; stock L69 (BIG), Edelbrock, & SLP exhaust, at various times.
It MUST be used w a windage tray.

Like I said,
Canton makes a great pan for our cars. For early or late blocks, all the bells and whistles you'd need.

I dont know if that one fits. I had a moroso 7qt that said "fits 82-92" . It fit like crap with the crossover exhaust. I had slp headers at the time. Well the hamburger pan I have now I know it fits 10x better than the moroso. I wrap my hand around the pipe which is 2 1/2 inches and I can stick the pipe in the channel with my hand on it. Its that nice. Someone pm an email , Ill send you pics so you can post them here. Thanks

Hey guys. I'm kind of in the same boat. I'm building a 427 using a Dart SHP block. It says "Uses 1981-1985 stock style oil pan & dipstick". Is there an aftermarket one that will work with shorties, or even long tubes with the mufflex y pipe? It appears my answer is no-lol

Re: Oil pan that will play nice with a y-pipe?
On my '85 I had in GA, I used the Hedman shorties and Y, my pan was the stock old '85 Z28 oil pan. The Hedman Y did touch the pan, barely, but one single hit with a hammer fixed that. I hit the pan, not the grossly-undersized pipe. Correct move is to not use Hedman's tiny Y, which is only 2" under the pan. Find one that's 2.5" there, and becomes 3" where it meets the passenger side.

The CMC cars use these pans, and they have to run a lot of stock stuff.
Looking at this pan, or the other ones offered for other blocks, they look like they would have plenty of room.
Also pelnty of measurements avalible on the site to check for yourself.
If nothing else, email them and ask.

Re: Oil pan that will play nice with a y-pipe?
You don't need a special pan for 3.75" stroke, and if you're using 3.75" stroke, you have too many cubic inches for Hedman's Y-pipe. It's really not adequate for a healthy 305, let alone a mild 334. Further, why invest in a fancy oilpan when you'll get more performance for your dollar just using the stock pan with a decent Y?

I dint see a fancy oil pan as an investment in horsepower,
for me it's an investment in keeping my engine alive.

-I was referring one I can use for my car, since I'm currently having issues with my Dyno Don Y-pipe fitting across my oil pan....
EDIT: My dilemma starts somewhere around post 205ish of this thread..https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/exha...headers-5.html
The OP (Jim) is just looking for a pan to accomidate a Y-pipe on his 350, I'm not trying to hijack his thread.....we just happen to have simular interests in finding an oil pan...

Re: Oil pan that will play nice with a y-pipe?
Factory 400 sbcs did not have notched or special pans.
Most likely the interference is due to large counter weights on an aftermarket crank or larger rods.
No need to sit a speculate. Just send Canton an e mail or call them and ask if it will clear.

EDIT: Too bad I see every measurement on that Canton ad you posted except for the one that counts for y-pipe clearance...I need to ask them how it measures from the lip of the front seal area to the bottom on the front part of the pan...and that sucker's not cheap....wow...

Re: Oil pan that will play nice with a y-pipe?
Most likely is a aftermarket crank issue....I just know with both that and 5.7 rods, it'll rub with a standard pan. I believe the Canton pan would work nicely (by looking at it)...I just need to ask them if they sell a simular notched model.

No its not a cheap pan, but by the time you get a new stock one, add a windage tray, a cranck scraper, you are getting up there, and still have a pan that is not anywhere close to this one.

Re: Oil pan that will play nice with a y-pipe?
OK - I called them. The pan posted above is not notched, and the Tech guy coulsn't assure me a Y-pipe would fit under it. He said since it's a road race pan, it's really meant to run Long tubes and not shorties....but I still think it might accomidate a Y-pipe. I went out ond measured my stock thirdgen pan, and so long as the front part isn't deeper than around 4 1/2", and the rear sump going forward isn't longer than 8", it might just fit...but that pan isn't notched so it's of no use to me. It would be close even if you didn't need a notched pan.
The only other pan he had was this:
https://www.cantonracingproducts.com...ion&key=13-082
But the sump is too long at 9"....guess I'll keep looking.

Re: Oil pan that will play nice with a y-pipe?
Probably why I opted for a forged crank in the first place, and better rods. Crank scrapers, windage trays and trap doors are great, but not really needed....unless you frequent the track.
I tried the exact oil pan Sofa posted earlier in this thread...it will fit with the Y-pipe, and is your best bet (and cheaper than the Canton)...but you'll need to get the ARP main stud kit for the windage tray, and it's not notched....which is how I first discovered I needed a notched pan in the first place BTW...but I can't recall whether I used it on my 305 or 400..dipstick location...maybe Sofa could shed some light on that...
I'm wondering if this pan would actually fit...I know it doesn't say it's for an F-body, but...

Re: Oil pan that will play nice with a y-pipe?
I'm late to this party but I know the 244T pan will work as well. Many guys over on the f-body road race forum run stuff like this with a Y pipe.
Also, some stroker assemblies clear stock pan rails and some don't. I've had good luck with a small ball peen hammer, a dolly, and a coarse flat file in re-forming oil pans to clear stroker connecting rod bolts. Obviously I can't hammer out an extra 1/4" of clearance but if it's just a small amount it's not too hard.
I had to clearance the block on my Camaro to fit the crank but the canton 242 pan I'm running in that application clears the crank. I'm using SCAT crank and rods in my GTA, the rods were ground for clearance at SCAT and that whole rotating assembly fit in my L98 block with NO grinding or clearancing anywhere. Stock pan and all..

Click down here, 2nd page, post #56, and look at this Canton oil pan with Dyno Don's headers and y-pipe. I'm in the same boat although I need a pass. side dipstick. This pan is a lot of money but I may end up buying it just to get past this hurdle.

Reviving an old thread but finally have some pics to post up...Canton 244T with SLP headers. Middle photo the crossover looks to be touching the pan but it's just the camera angle...there's a nice little gap between the two. The exhaust fits like a glove around the pan but no touching or interference, very happy with how they work together.

Does it have a DS dipstick? Allow clearance for aftermarket cranks (3.75" stroke)??....I do love the way it's made, although pricey....

Re: Oil pan that will play nice with a y-pipe?
Based on some of the posts above I think it does require some massaging depending on your stroker application. The 244T is PS dipstick but they have the 244 that's for thirdgen's with DS dipsticks & 2-pc RMS and the 244M for PS dipsticks & 2-pc RMS. There really isn't much info on Canton's website though regarding stroker applications. They are pricey but occassionally pop up used. I got mine for a crazy price...$75 + $25 shipping on ebay. Even better was that it was brand new, had been on a display engine at a speed shop. I just lucked out that no one else bid on it!
