Chambered exhaust Camaro sounds like a truck.... help...
OK I recently did some changes to my exhaust system and need some input.
I have an 85 Z28 with a 5.7 TPI. Hooker headers, and 3 inch single pipe all the way thru. I have NO cat and put a medium length chambered exhaust in place of my I-pipe. I also added a 12 inch chambered resonator after the axle and have a single tailpipe outlet.
The car is nice and loud, but sounds like a damned diesel truck when you get on it.
My question, is there any way to improve the sound without replacing the system all together? Is the source of my truck sound due to my lack of a cat converter or whats the deal? help guys.

I would probably experiment with some type of home made baffel inside the system somewhere.

chambered mufflers aren't much different than glass packs so it doensn't surprise me that you don't care for the sound. I would try one of two things. Put a cat back on it.(a big high flow 3" one) or put the biggest round magnaflow you can fit in place of the chambered muffler in your intermediate pipe.

Put a catback exhaust on it with a regular muffler. Even ricers give me a thumbs up on mine.LOL

Guys, I am not looking to replace my system.... I simply asked if adding a catalytic converter back to the current system would improve the sound and give me closer to what I want.
More specifically, GMMG or chambered users.. please chime in

I have medium powersticks on a 350. True dual no cats with longtube headers.

Does yours sound anything like that? If you hate that sound I would suggest just replacing them with flowmasters super 44s w/o cats.

Hmm, i had a shorter chambered tube from classic chambered (powerstick) on my L98, no cat, tube in the i-pipe, nothing after going over axle, just tips. No truck sound here.
Try taking the resonator off? It may be the longer tube giving that truck sound tho. Shorter is more aggressive.
Else try a magnaflow/dynotech/etc round straight thru muffler. Sorta like a bullet but more packing for reduced sound. Still will be loud but will sound better. Put that in the current chambered tube spot if you dont like the sound.

adding a cat would probably quiet it down some.
im running some super 44s and they were too loud for my likeing. as Edward suggested above, i made some baffles. they made a HUGE difference. the nice thing is i can remove them if i want to get loud. theyre just held it with a few screws. very easy to make also.

I have something similar to that Summit muffler here.... When I bought the car it had some sort of Jegs branded catback... I still have it in the shed....
As far as the round straight thru mufflers, which would you all recommend? I looked at magnaflows website and it comes up with about 40 versions...lol

IMO these TPI engines arent the best sounding naturally. You pair that up with a truck exhaust, and it's gonna sound like a truck. These engines are setup for big torque, they belong in a truck. So, all that haha it's gonna sound like a truck.
You do have a few options though, you can cam it, make it sound a little nastier, you can put a muffler on it, which will add a little rasp to it.

a chambered muffler is a flowmaster type muffler, a chambered "stick" muffler is like the GMMG.

I am still working on my exhaust but I have two 3" by 3" tube mufflers that I am going to try. Then nothing else, up over the axle and exit with two 4" S.S. tips yet to be made.

redneckjoe Knows how to make baffels, I am betting that his has a unique sound and is one of a kind. Now that's what I am talking about, looks like he used the expanded metal for his baffels.

Does it make much difference having dual outlets or a single? Presently I am running a single 3 inch outlet tucked up behind the bumper...

that said, I think it must have something to do with the fact that I have no clue what a "chambered resonator" is. You guys must be talking about something like those "classic chambered" mufflers? Personally I'd just put a flowmaster 40 in teh back and call it a day. Should change the tone, as the flowmaster is what I would call a chambered muffler, and I think they're great for lazy sounding v8's (ie ones with stock/truck cams in them). If you ever put a lumpy cam in it, a glasspack style muffler will sound much better, but even then normal glasspacks still sound like poop.

I should have been a bit more clear... Yes I am running one of the chambered powersticks from classic chambered.... similar to the ones on the gmmg system...

I have true dual X-pipe with short powersticks on my stock L98 5.7 and this sum bitch sounds like a drag car at WOT.
Pulled over once for flooring it in the middle of town
Mind posting a video or something so we can hear how it sounds?
