muffler location..?
So i plan on running true duals. Please don't say a single 3 is better. you won't change my mind and your wasting your time. So i am either running 2.5 or 3", i have not decided yet. I plan on running the pipes out the back, where have you guys actually put the mufflers? i plan on running either cherry bombs or something of that nature. yes i know it will be loud, thats what i want. So i guess my question is....Does the location of the muffler effect the sound/bass much? my old chevy truck had about 5 feet after its glasspacks and you could feel it rumble when you walked by and it had a great sound....Yet most pic i see on here and else where people are dumping the pipes right after the muffler. How (if) does it efect the sound?

Re: muffler location..?
Single 3.5 is about the same area as a dual 2.5, but it has less internal surface area, so less drag on the exhaust. Im all about long tubes, but make a decent y-pipe and take it over the axle. If you prefer the sound then I can definitely understand that, but you'll have a hard time keeping the ground clearance reasonable.
Also, I've never heard of any flowtech LT's for our cars. I'd go with teh Hedman's, tehy're good and cheap. Cant imagine the flowtechs would be any better, if they're really for our cars.

Re: muffler location..?
It's my understanding that the closer to the engine the muffler is, the louder it will be. Mines an American Thunder muffler, in place of the cat, and it's got a pretty agressive sound for a six cylinder.
Cherry bombs/glasspacks though reduce high frequency sounds, so in theory if you ran two on each side, one a couple feet after the headers and one before it dumps, you'd have a really deep sound.

Re: muffler location..?
yeah infernalvortex, i can't find any info about them even on flowtechs site, but they are still in the box, and it say's 82-92 camaro v8. i may get them, he only wants 100. ....theEndofanera.. as for the running 2 mufflers in a row...so your saying run 4 total mufflers?????? i have never heard of that, and seem more of a pain/waste. my friend has true 3" with glasspacks and they are located right infront of the rear end, it rumbles hard... that's what i am looking for, but i have to be better than him, we have a competition going on.....

Re: muffler location..?
Yes, but that's only in theory, on a V8 you're not going to have enough high frequency sound to warrant that - one on each side would sound good, especially if you had them before the rear, I can't predict how much pipe size will affect the sound though... Having dual glasspacks or a muffler and glasspack would probably be best served on something like v6 where it produces tons of whine. I was mostly thinking out loud there haha

In theory, the classic chambered glasspack will probably rumble harder then your buddys.Or dumped cherry bomb extremes.

Re: muffler location..?
Pipe diameter/size will effect the sound, so will exhaust length. A shorter exhaust will be louder than a full catback,but....... You need enough motor to back up the larger diameter or even shorter exhaust size now. Otherwise, you may lose velocity/power. Larger size pipes cool the exhaust down, sound louder and reduce backpressure, but lose velocity/ exhaust speed. Shorter exhaust sounds louder, but moves the powerband up in the rpms, sacrificing some low end torque. I say if you are pretty much stock/mild build then go with a 3" ypipe or dual 2 1/4 inch ypipe and a 2.5 inch catback with a nice sounding muffler. Hey do what you want tho, it's your car. Does that thing have cats on it?

Re: muffler location..?
On my bolt on L98. I lost some low end power when i removed my muffler. Just so you get an idea. Sure it sounded louder and deeper, but i missed the power when i had to deal with driving in traffic.

Re: muffler location..?
That what i was leaning towards. I have been slowly getting the car ready for the swap. i was planning on the 406 being in the car this summer but i got orders so i am waiting until i PCS. gotta get my house ready. but i will get more road time in fl. But i am still planning on doing the exhaust this summer, just not the engine swap.

Re: muffler location..?
I got a 406 and went with 2210s into a 3 inch y into a 4 inch mufflex system with a 4 in and two 3 out spintech muffler, It is the best sounding exhaust I have ever heard. If I had it to do over I would stick with the 2210s and then use chambered 3 inch and then go to the oval shaped pipe into a boom tube exited in front of the back tire. Similar to what nascar uses. They have clearance problems like we do and there exhaust flows great.

If you're doing duals, then fitment is a much bigger consideration than sound.
