Exhaust Cut-out

I'm going to be removing my smog system and EGR tubes when I do my engine upgrade soon. Would this be an option to put in place of my catalytic converter and how would it sound/perform on the street but also the strip. To be clear I would only have the one dump at maybe a 45 angle towards passenger side under the car.

I hope to change over to the Eibach pro kit next year. The motor is estimated to produce approx 400 crank HP and will be pulling hopefully 6k rpms.

Re: Exhaust Cut-out

bro your gonna hurt power. when i cut out my cat and just ran it test pipe style with a turndown under the passenger floor at a 45 degree angle i wanted to shoot myself in the face. it sucked. so loud and it was definately noticeably slower.. up to you though.

id wait and get a full decent exhaust for that motor when u have the cash. go slp loudmouth or loudmouth 2 and give it some room to breathe. or maybe a mufflex 3.5" with a magnaflow? thats not too loud and sounds nasty floored...

Re: Exhaust Cut-out

I wasnt thinking of running just the cutout but I have to put a pipe in there to replace the space the cat will leave behind. I do plan on racing at the strip a couple times each year and that would be the time I would most likely remove the cutout.

When you noticed it was slower was that at lower RPMs or higher? Can the motor flow more air through it at higher revs and therefore produce more power without needing to run through the muffler?

How do the gaskets on these things hold up? Are they prone to leaks?

Re: Exhaust Cut-out

You will not loose power with a cutout. What you will loose, is bottom end torque but you will gain in the top-end.

This is NOT due to a loss of backpressure which is a very common misconception. It is because of the wavelength of your exhaust. The wavelength is different lengths at different RPM's (Long down low and short up top) and you need the right amount of pipe to "tune" the motor to make optimum power at that RPM.

I run a straight-pipe system on the street with no cat and no muffler while retaining the stock exhaust routing and noted NO loss in bottom end torque but did note a slight increase in breathing up top.
