Best way to avoid trouble with the law is to go out of your way to be inconspicuous. Doesn't matter what the law is, the popo's can and will make up their own laws and they can and will toss you in jail and charge you and you'll be out bail, lawyer fees, time, and respect, and then you'll have to hope you get a judge that won't just agree with the police to spite you for being a cocky A-hole anyway.

People go to jail and get convicted every day for doing things that are legal because our legal system is so convoluted and complicated and every person responsible for interpreting it will have their own intentional or unintentional interpretation bias.

The only way to prove something is legal is to pay a lawyer to convince a judge that it's legal. You can go down that road if you want, but trust me, you do NOT want to be on their radar for something so trivial as exhaust.

Dude... your exhaust IS illegal. not only will that setup tip the db's, your running no Cat, and I assume, no AIR system.

Even in an area where there is no emissions testing, you need that cat to be legal.

Have you looked into how much you could get fined for tampering with the emissions system?

I have NEVER heard of someone actually getting a federal fine for removing their own cat... But there is a first time for everything. and pushing something like this could be that catalyst. (see what I did there? )

It is FEDERAL LAW to not tamper with emissions systems. Just because you dont have emissions testing does NOT mean it's legal. It's VERY illegal. Cats MUST be in stock location. You cant just weld them in and be legal. You need to back off before you get hurt. Get some blowmasters or something.

Also, just a tip: No one wants to hear your obnoxiously loud car to begin with.

I will repeat myself - you do NOT want to get on the bad side of local law enforcement, ESPECIALLY over something so trivial and stupid as exhaust systems.

I know you're young (Im only 25, I remember) and you think you have rights and entitlements and the world is supposed to be fair to you and so forth - that's not life. Reality is that cops make up the rules on the spot, and for you to overturn them you will have to pay a lawyer. Reality is that your exhaust is very illegal and if you insist on forcing the issue, you are going to end up in a world of hurt, regardless of how "fair" the cops were being or not being. The world isnt set up to be fair, it's set up to hammer the nails that stick out - dont stick out.

wrong. Emissions are federally mandated. your car came with an AIR injection system to reduce emissions. It is against federal law to tamper/remove that system.

I couldnt care less what you do to your car emissions wise. Most people wouldnt care. but fact is, you are indeed breaking federal laws with your modified exhaust. you can get called on that and get fined exorbitant amounts of money. Is it really worth it to push these folks instead of quieting down the exhaust a bit? Or at minimum stop drawing attention to it?

monty how are things in portland mi different from clinton township. my car had the exhaust cut off and was loud as could be and i got smiles from cops. michigan doesnt have laws against modded cars exhaust i dont think

I'm sure they have exhaust laws everywhere. They are just enforced less in some places. Here in NC (the motorsports capital of the world), there are lots of loud cars that rarely get tickets. They are still illegal though.

Any "Primary" road can be considered a "Highway" Think of them as the roads that get plowed first when it snows. Primary motorways to get from Point A to Point b.

"Streets" generally include backroads and residential motorways.

I am lucky that I live in a town where the police don't bother themselves with this type of petty BS.

Granted, the cops here are pretty petty or retarded I can't decide which is a more fitting description, but I'll give you an example:

I have a .030 over 305 with some bolt ons, free mods, modified intake and hooker 2055 headers and Y-Pipe into a 3"/2x 2.5" straight pipe exhaust. No cat and no muffler. Believe me even with the stock TPI cam it sounds like a monster.

Two nights ago I was with my friend helping him check out a Thirdgen that had been for sale on the side of the road for quite some time (He ended up buying it). The house was on the southbound side and we came from north, so we had to park on the shoulder with our cars facing the wrong direction (Other than the direction issue which IMHO doesn't make much sense that it matters which way the car is facing, nothing was illegal about it). We both even put our hazards on and thought it to not be a big deal.

About 10 minutes into the conversation with the seller, a local cop pulls up in front of out cars and puts on his lights. Get's out acting like a total arrogant dick and says he writing us a ticket. I ask him for what and he very belligerently asks if I should be parked with my vehicle facing the wrong direction. I told him I didn't see a problem with it and his response is "oh well to each their own laws ".

A second cop who I was familiar with pulls up and begins talking with us. He gives me the WORST on the spot made up spiel about how the blinking hazard lights attract drivers at night "Like a bug to a light bulb" and that's what causes roadside collisions .

Anyways, they give us the $25 non moving violation fines and tell us to move our vehicles. Neither of the officers said anything about my exhaust when I started the motor nor the fact that I was operating a car with antique plates while dressed in my work uniform. Ticked me off so bad after we were done looking at the car I left the guy's driveway, put my foot to the floor in the middle of the turn, locked up the Eaton in 2nd gear and had the car going sideways down Rt.1

Yeah, cops are stupid. There are good cops, but for every one you come across you can bet there's 3 more douches waiting around the corner with a radar gun. With that being said, I have found the BEST way to avoid trouble with the police is don't attract attention to yourself (This coming from the guy with a straight pipe I know but you catch my drift) and try to develop a good rapport with the police. They always patrol through my neighborhood and see me working on my car and whenever I bump into them at a 7-11 on their doughnut run I always be polite, ask them how It's going and attempt to make small talk.

As for not attracting attention to yourself, I don't know how your driving habits are, but try to broadcast a laxed image of yourself. Even when I had my old setup with edelbrock headers and a flowmaster muffler, if I spun it to 4 grand from every stoplight I'm sure I would have gotten snatched a few times myself.

it seems to me from your postings that you made a stink when you got in trouble and you are now receiving the shitstorm that follows that. You have to be respectful to other people, especially the police, if you want that kind of respect in return.

as for your case, you have nothing. your bbc engine swap is illegal, and the exhaust is completely illegal, nothing you can do about it. Only thing you can do would be to complete the exhaust out the back with a muffler of somekind, something that looks like a muffler. That way the car has a "proper exhaust" and they cant complain about it anymore. Bullets are stupid loud anyway, and im sure this car is a heck of a lot louder than you think or say it is.

They make straight through performance/race mufflers, usually a perforated core with sound deadener wrapped around them, dynomax, borla, dynatech ect all make these, and i have one on my 86. It looks like a muffler too, that will aid you, and its still pretty loud. Not obnoxiously loud like what your car must be like, but still great sounding.

You can do what you want with cats, since your exhaust does not follow the factory routing, so you will never get the cat where it needs to be. However, you can get high flow bullet cats that will do the job, and still flow very well. they will help with some of the sound and the smell of the car.

You dont want to hear it, but the car will sound a LOT better with mufflers of somekind on it, might even perform better too.

And dont try to start a war over the "female" officer hasseling you. That will just create more friction and a larger shitstorm. She is completely in the right with your case and ultimately in the end you will still be wrong, and you will make yourself look even worse.

wow I would fix the noise before they tow it. Just because you like it does not mean others do and they have to deal with them to. Witch means they have to do there job. Every state is different. She was doing her job you should tell her thanks for just the ticket and not towing it. You don't have the right to break the law. But I was young once know how you feel it just does not work that way.

You're lucky that the cops haven't decided to ticket you for violating federal emissions laws and handing you the associated $2500 fine for not having a cat. Those cops that you think are hassling you are actually cutting you some slack by not giving you that ticket, but if you **** them off long enough, that will change.
