Small leak under hood?

Hi everyone,

Ok so my car (since I bought it) has been rattling it is more underneath than anything. I did some research on them but Im thinking its a small leak or crack somewhere. I watched a video on a broken exhaust manifold and the sound coming from that kind of sounded like what I have going on except it was way louder and you could here it from the top of the car. You can just barely hear this from the top. BUT! I turned my heater on with the door closed ( first time doing it I live in heat so no need for it really). I was sitting there for about 5 secs b4 smelling fumes coming through my heater. Im thinking there is an exhaust leak possibly under my hood. When I rev my engine the sound goes away too. I just did a valve adjustment and I'm pretty sure all that is good. But its running good running good then a sputter or two sometimes looks like Im losing oil pressure and my left tail pipe spits out semi cold air sometimes.

Anyone can tell me for sure this is an exhaust leak or what it may be. (Im buying new exhaust/headers/glasspacks for it here in a bit but just need to know if it is for sure an exhaust leak. I can take a video for anyone who is interested if you need more info).

Re: Small leak under hood?

No one has any info. I just wanted some more info, beyond what I gathered so I could rule it in or out. Because what ever it is Im going to fix it. If no one helps here than I guess ill just replace the whole exhaust system.

you do understand that nobody gets paid to monitor and answer questions; don't you?

Next, you posted this in the exhaust section and the general engine section would be the best place for it

In this section you are suppose to make threads asking what is the best exhaust for your 20-30 year old car thinking the question has never been asked before

anyway, put it up on drive on ramps and get underneath to listen. Do not assume that it's an exhaust leak

Re: Small leak under hood?

Best way I've found to locate the vicinity of an exhaust leak is seafoam- found a cracked manifold and loose bolts last week when I seafoamed my Colorado.

I thought exhaust was all one thing thats why it was in this category even if it is under the hood haha. But I will attempt at putting my posts in the correct place from now on haha. Re: Small leak under hood?

yes I read the can but It told me to ask professionals and if the can is not a pro and neither am I. Im assuming someone on here is =} by the way this seafoam sounds like it works wonders. Does it work as well as it says it does? If so Im going to buy another can.

Re: Small leak under hood?

there is a flap in the passenger side manifold that closes when first fired up cold , they tend to start flapping around a little , not saying this is your problem but it's a place to start .

Please; explain further id like to know a little more about this. How can I pinpoint this if there is a way. Should I take my exhaust manifold off and see if its broken? Thanks for the reply every one is getting me closer to my problem! The noise is driving me crazy haha I've done so much to it and I got it to be a faint tapping. I put half a can of sea foam into my crankcase, and put this fuel injector cleaner into my gas tank. It added so much power its crazy. But the tapping is still there. When I walk around to my exhaust I hear a sputter (only from left exhaust) and my car looses power and then quickly regains it. Could this flap be causing this? My left exhaust also shoots out cold air when this happens.. plus the left exhaust isn't really that hot in the first place but you can notice a change. Like I said I rev it up and it goes away no problem with it sputtering then, only when its idling. Its upsetting all I need to do is fix this tapping then I can drive it after I buy some new tires. (can drive it now but would feel better when its gone)

Re: Small leak under hood?

unless you have true duals which are cars did not come with don't put much into the temp difference in the exhaust , the flap ( sorry i don't know the right name ) is in between the manifold and the y-pipe on the pass side . But if your buying headers that will go away anyway .Make sure if you put seafoam in your oil to change it relatively soon you don't wanna leave that stuff in there too long it can hurt things when left in.

Re: Small leak under hood?

So it only makes sound while you're idling?

Is the noise dependent or independent of engine speed?

Is it a rattle or a tick?

Check your spark plug wires, there could be one that's not properly connected, as well.

Man... That sucks! I just did an oil change. Since Im changing the oil again. Which do you recommend something that will reduce the white smoke coming out of my exhaust. there is a little bit and when I rev it a burst of it comes out. I heard something about synthetic oil being good for that. And since I just did an oil change do I need to buy a new filter?

The 'flap' is the EFE valve. IIRC, the valve was replaced on TBI/TPI cars with a simple spacer.

Re: Small leak under hood?

When I put it in drive and what not it still does it but not as bad as before. This car was running a really high idle when I first got it, and that clanking noise was almost unbearable. It almost sounds like something is loose somewhere almost a knocking more than anything. I did a valve adjustment and it made the noise simmer down a bit. When I bought the temp sensor for it the idle went down a little then I did the adjustment and it runs perfectly now. Every time that clank noise gets to its peak my exhaust sputters a little and my engine seems to loose a little power. Thats why I was thinking it may be a leak because its loosing back pressure.

I was thinking it could be that flap thing or the EFE valve knocked loose by the previous owners. Because they rammed the exhaust into something and its really bent. So bent some brackets broke off underneath. But other than that everything is fine with it. Oh but now it seems to be overheating and I think thats because I put sea foam in it and ran it for a while. There also is a hissing sound coming from the hose on the back of my block ( I think this is where its at) if not I have no idea where it is. Still how do I tell if I have an exhaust leak? I just replaced all spark plug wires and spark plugs so I know its not that. But there is some wires that aren't plugged in and I was wandering if one were to be a knock sensor would that give me my problem?

I also thought this was a lifter. I really don't know how to pin point a problem without taking the engine apart first. I can take video and pictures of what you want. You can tell me what to do and I will do it, I just want this clank to disappear. Im buying headers very soon now that I found a good deal.
