Hedmen Headers

Well, I got a set for 40 bucks. I was trying to get the driver side in first and the k-member was in the way. I grind about 1in to 1.5 in on somespot. I still can't get them to fit, so will new motor mounts help? When I get them in I got about 2in of ground clearance.

Also, what kind of motor mount will I need? Can i get some cheap one at autozone for 10 bucks?

Longtubes, I bought some solid motor mounts. I'll have to put them in, in a couple days.

Re: Hedmen Headers

I put long tubes on my '82 T/A 305, they are a pain. Those cars weren't meant for them, I hammered mine in a tiny bit, but my ground clearance is terrible. I wish I had sprung for shorty headers and ran some 3 inch tube back to a more open, muffler friendly location.

Wow that's way more ground clearance AND more tubing than I have, lol. I have about an inch if i'm lucky and they stop at the glasspacks, not legal but not permanent either. I plan to route it out the sides.

Yeah, I should get my new motor mounts in tomorrow..I'll have to jack the car up and take the a-arm off to get the motor mounts off. I'm going to run 2" duel exhuast the rest the way out.

Re: Hedmen Headers

I started the motor mount and everything about 10. I never took a A-arm off before so it took me a while to get it off. It was a B**ch to hold the motor mount nut and turn the bolt but I got it. After I grind about 2 1/2 hours and putting the headers in and dropping the motor, I think I put the headers in and out at least 12 times. I only put in the drivers side for today taking about 4 hours. I only have about 1-1/2" of ground clearance but the speed bump gave me about 2-1/2" now if not sure. When I turned the car on the sound was priceless. I love the loud, I just can't wait to get the duel exhaust hook up.

Re: Hedmen Headers

I don't think something is right here. I had to cut about 3 in off the A-Arm and maybe 1/2 in into the K-member on the passenger side. It took me probably 4 hours to get everything cleared on the passenger side. I don't know if my 4 speed manual to th350 swap helped any, I used the same cross member. When I get paid I'm going to buy a new transmission mount bushing and see if it lifts the tranny up a little so I get better ground clearance. I heated the heater up with running the car for 30 mins then took a jack and lifted the headers up to get a couple of inches of ground clearance. I'll have to take a pic and post it here.

Re: Hedmen Headers

He may not have been lying, like I mentioned before, I have longtube headers on my Bird. I have only slightly more ground clearance than ymenic's picture shows. These cars simply do not accommodate longtube headers. Since you have gone this far, I would suggest turning your exhaust clamps sideways and possibly cutting the flange off and welding the collector right to the header itself. Otherwise you may have to scrap the LT's and invest in some shorty headers and fab the rest.

Yep, you don't want to see my LCA or K-member on the passenger side. I just need some new rear and front spring to bring the car up a little bit and new tires and I should clear these speed bumps a lot better.

Re: Hedmen Headers

Try your best to look for copper gaskets they seem to be the best for lasting and not leaking once you get them seated on. usually takes tightening the bolts twice once on install and after you heat them up and drive a while. sure you probably know that but thought i might just say.

I had to remove the oil pressure sensor and bang a corner of the body a little bit along with a few dings on the headers but they went in fine.

WOW!!! Makes me glad I went with shortys for th IROC! I highly recommend the hedman 68470 shortys. I had to weld in the A.I.R. tube kit and an o2 sensor bung, but I didnt have to modify anything.

Re: Hedmen Headers

No problems installing the 68460's here, no grinding or cutting needed, both required to be installed from underneath and driver just required removing the oil pressure sensor which i broke and had to be replaced and passenger side only the starter had to be removed and reinstalled.

That looks like a C2/C3 corvette header the way the primaries run there and with the collector like that.

i had to remove my starter, other than that the headers went right in. and my ground clearance is pretty good, around 5 or 6 inches. im running the heddman long tubes into heddman s-tentions and summit glasspacks dumped under my seat. i dont know why people say you cant run true duals on a 3rd gen, mine are great

Re: Hedmen Headers

It's been so long since I put mine in but I do know I didn't have to cut anything. As I recall the drivers side went right in, the pass. side was a little bit of a bitch but got it done.

LOL Glad to see I'm not the only one who knows about the wonders of flex pipe. I ran my exhaust true duals through flowmaster 40's with dumps and was constantly dragging them. Now that I don't worry about tagging or inspecting it I just run dumps on the headers uncorked.

when you have long tube headman headers. There S extensions are your best friend when it comes to the tranny cross member.

Why have free-flowing exhaust when you could have flex pipe instead? ;-)
