Heat Shield / Rattling Problems

I have a 1992 Firebird HB, it has the 305 motor.

Coming from underneath the car is this rattling. I was told it was the heat shield. I haven't had time to get under and look yet, but I was wondering if it is the heat shield...do I really need it? And if it is the heat shield causing the rattling...why is it? Do they typically loosen over time? I'm not even sure what it looks like. How is the shield on there? Welded? Bolted? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Any kind of diagram or mental picture would be great too. I just want to be able to drive my car w/o the rattling.

Get under there and check it out! A diagram isn't gonna help.

Re: Heat Shield / Rattling Problems

The heat shield is spot welded on and would be a pain to do. When I had this problem, I just went to the hardware store and bought hose clamps and made them the length needed and put them over the loose shield. Problem solved for less then $5.00.
