Home made headers for my new 305 TPI
Wanted a set of shorty headers to use the extra room that a tube K member has, so this is what i built. Now a question, what do you guys think about a X-pipe just in front of the cats to balance the cat temp and flow.

That looks awesome. I was just looking at my new tubular k member and wondering what cool things I can do with all that room.
What the specs?
Tube diameter?
Whats you plan for the rest of the exhaust?
How close to the starter do they get?

Re: Home made headers for my new 305 TPI
The 2 1/2s will go to 2 cats and then to a existing Magnaflow 3 inch system.
I was going to scrap the 3 inch and go to 3 1/2 but 2 local guys just switched from 3 to 3 1/2 and lost hp (low 12 second cars with 380+ rwhp) so my thinking now is to keep the existing 3 inch and try the 3 1/2 later.
The starter is one reason i did the headers, the new set has a lot more room around it.
The K member is from BMR fabrication, I give it a 6 on a 1 to 10 scale.

Re: Home made headers for my new 305 TPI
If it were mine I'd put the X pipe where it fits the best and can be built with the fewest compromises, then let the cats fall where they may as long as they aren't too far from the engine. Some of the smaller cats today are pretty tiny, I bet you could stagger them before the X pipe and still have room. I think the newer cars like vettes and camaros have the balance pipes after the converters, but that may be for diagnosic reasons.

Re: Home made headers for my new 305 TPI
With the dual cat factory location, having one cat 47 inches from # 8 ex port and the other cat 95 inches from # 1 exhaust port the drivers side is going to be colder
The picture is of the dual 3 inch to 3" cats and 4" single from my street strip car it's a auto so i ran the driver side pipe under the torque convert (9 inch converter) to get the shortest pipe and see how long it still is.
also a picture of the x pipe i made and a location for it. what do you think.

..Looks like this isn't your first go 'round at TIG welding, nice work.
I had no idea you were going to make that kind of power and spin that kind of rpm. I do agree that dual cats are needed and I think 2.5" pipe is going to be fully utilized, if anything dual 3" may not be out of line but is difficult to package.
I was not envisioning the stock routing of the dual cat setups, I do agree that with one cat a large distance from the engine that it would be cooler.
My first idea would be to stagger 2 small cats right off the engine. If you look at the 3rd picture in your first post, maybe you can put the cat for the driver's header close to the pan, then put the cat for the passenger's header the same distance from the collector as the other side, maybe it would end up right behind the passenger side A arm. That may get the cats close enough to the engine that you could then just put a Y merge collector were the stock cats go and be done.
Here are some of the cats I'm thinking of. The smallest I found is still 4" around and that may not fit...

Here is an interesting character that may make packaging easier

By the way, I'm still shocked at these guys running single 3" cat backs at such high power levels. It have read a few articles where it was proven that small tail pipes will support lots of power because the exhaust has cooled and shrank by the time it gets there. This must be what is happening with these guys getting away with a single 3" cat back exhaust and putting down nearly 400whp...

About 470-490 hp at 77-7800 rpm with a max rpm of 8600 with that much airflow 2 cats are needed i think
Awesome headers, even better looking motor!

Haha, thought so. Those headers look dope, should save you a few starters as well.

The state i live in, you have to keep the cats in the stock location and more.
IDENTIFYING A NEW CALIFORNIA AFTERMARKET CATALYTIC CONVERTERS - As of January 1st, 2009, what you need to look for to ensure you are selling, buying or installing California LEGAL catalytic converters:
The body should be clearly labeled with the following:
C.A.R.B.- EO Number: (example: D-193-88)
Part Number: (example: 34015)
Date Code: (example: 0109)
Directional Flow Arrow
1/2" Tall Numbers Must Be Visible From 5ft. Away
With all this having the right cats is a big deal here in California.

The only help I can give at this point is simply to mention that stainless steel tubing will hold heat as well or better than ceramic coated mild steel, so you may not have as much temperature difference as even a stock application. I'm sure you already know this, so I'm not really helping.

Great work w/ the headers. Reminds me that I need some TIG welding lessions.

Re: Home made headers for my new 305 TPI
That's one rare manifold!
I remember reading the history of that manifold, 2 prototypes? I hacked up and stuff, then one sold mint on ebay that was found in the back of the shop as they were closing out.
I think that's the right history.

Re: Home made headers for my new 305 TPI
The 3rd one is not hacked up, I have that one. Jerrys is the only one with the EGR adapter. Mine is the only one with the modified fuel rails and the bolts with it. The only mods that were done was some epoxy work on the inside and the runners enlarged and epoxied up in the short radius. I removed the epoxy in the plenum. Enlarged the rubbers all the way and smoothed out the casting. I think mine is actually the 1st one, the other 2 were mint, never installed.

Re: Home made headers for my new 305 TPI
Interesting concept to use an X pipe in front of the cats. I wonder if this will have any significant performance changes in both power and emissions output?
Biggest question is, can this thing actually pass emissions with a 240 solid roller and only 305 inches? Those 280xfi cams are passing in larger 350-360 motors but do you think that solid will pass cali standards??

Orr89RocZ do you have a cardomain? I'd love to see you build and possibly add you as a friend...

Re: Home made headers for my new 305 TPI
I had a cardomain but its not 100% up to date and doesnt have all my pics on it. My turbo build here has more information on it with more pics. Same with my Fquick i need to update it.

thats some good work man! what intake is that?
roughly how much did you spend on supply? im getting a price quote for headers on my ls1. and they want about 1000 for parts and labor. i want better clearance on my set up .
