How to connect exhaust pipes?

Hi there...

I have a "dumb" question about my exhaust system on my 87 Camaro.
I have just finished rebuilding the whole engine and transmission.
It's a 305TPI with 700R4 transmission.

I have bough some headers to my car. Hooker 2055HKR, and a Catco 9118 catalytic converter.

The Y-pipe on the headers are 3" and the converter inlet is 3"..Since I am NO expert on exhaust building I just have to ask. How should I connect the converter to the Y-pipe since they are both the same sice?..
Any special tool to make the diameter bigger or what?
Welding??...Please helpe me out here..

Another thing is that the outlet on the Catco 9118 is 3" and my cat-back system from the converter and back is 2.5". How to make theese fit together??

Re: How to connect exhaust pipes?

they can be butt welded, or you can get a 3" ID/ID band style clamp, or have an exhaust shop expand the pipe on the cat or the y so they slide together.

for the other side, get a 2.5x3 reducer

Hey thanks for that quick reply..
I had in mind acutally all of the answers you gave me there..
I just wanted to ask you guys that have done this a couple of times before.
I ain't familiar with building exhaust because so far I have been so lucky that everything had been bolt on's and that is an easy job..

Re: How to connect exhaust pipes?

because of where it is, i would prefer to not butt weld the cat, if you go the welding route, have one of the pipes expanded, then weld it, it will be stronger and wont crack with the heat.

I dont like the band style clamps because they dont clamp the pipes enough and they tend to let things move around unless you put screws through them

okay..I was not planning any welding because I have already mounted the headers and the y-pipe at the engine and that was a he.. of a job I must say. A lot of bending and stretching to make them fit.

Now I just want to connect the converter with the y-pipe somehow and then bolt on the cat-back system...
