I got everything tacked into place today. The mufflers tuck up high and really dont hang down at all. I also did put the mufflers in with the rear axle hanging down so I know the exhaust and driveshaft will not touch. Here are two pictures showing everything.

This next picture is from the front of the car looking back. You can use the 3 bolt flanges as a reference point.

How about some pics from the back, showing tube to axle clearances? What did you do for tips & exit? Tucked or below the bumper? Pics man!

The exhaust is going to end before the axle for now. He's going to drive it (hopefully this weekend for the first time in over 5 years) and see how loud it is. If its louder than he wants, then I'm going to run it over the axle. If he goes over, hes not sure about what tips yet. He has some nice stainless rolled lip tips if he decides to use them. If not, there will be turndowns on the current setup.

I'll take a picture tonight of how close it comes to the rear axle. With the rearend all the way down, there is only maybe an 1/8" between the mufflers and the driveshaft and torque arm. The exhaust from the X back is getting mounted solid. Thats why the flex sections are there just before the X. We did that so the exhaust could get routed very close to the floarboards without rattling on them.

The headers are shorty headers. Not sure exactly as they came on the Camaro I have now which use to be his car years ago. The mufflers are Magnaflow straight threw. All the tubing used is mandrel bent 2.5".

You could always turn the ends towards the side, instead of going over the axle.

Not necessarily going out to the sides, but at least aiming them to the side, to help get the exhaust out from under the car. Turn outs......

Thank you everyone for the compliments. I just noticed I had more responses. I'm planning a T56 swap on my car so I've been busy planning that out.

Good idea. I'll probably just lightly clamp the turndowns on for now to see how it sounds with them positioned differently then weld them when we find how we like it.

Exhaust itself isnt a side hobby but building cars is. I'd actually consider it more of a passion. I love fabrication. I'll take more pics of his car but I have done 90%+ of the work on it. Its got about 2 or 3 years worth of work done to it. Even my car I completely built myself. I spent a tad over 5 years building it.

Thanks for the compliment but I dont think you'd want me too. I spent probably about almost 20 hours working on this over the last month or so. I can see areas that could have been improved, but overall I am very happy with it considering this is the first time I've done exhaust like this.

The exhaust is comming out tommorrow to get fully welded up so I'll take more pics then and hopefully a sound clip too.

Re: Just about done with my brothers exhaust. What do you think?

Very nice work on the exhaust!!!! With the right mandrel bends and a bit of patience IMO it will always be a better fitting and performing system then the "store bought" systems--let alone the muffler shop specials with all the gimpy, restrictive bends that the usual exhaust tubing bender puts in the pipes! Very well done! Another case of "If you want it built right, build it yourself".

Re: Just about done with my brothers exhaust. What do you think?

All right. Well I pulled it out yesterday to finish welding everything. I had one of the pipes going into the X fall off, I guess I didnt have it tacked good enough. So I welded everything else and now I have to put the the exhaust back in the car, tack that one pipe again, then pull the exhaust back off to weld it, then put it back in. Oh well. Here is a picture of the complete exhaust off the car. I also took 2 pics of the motor its going on.

As you can tell, there are still some loose ends to tie up under the hood. The motor runs fine, but we still need to clean up some of the electrical.

Re: Just about done with my brothers exhaust. What do you think?

The whole system came out looking great, as well as the detail work on the engine! Congrats on a very nice project, patience really pays off!

I started using those flex's too, sure does make for a lot tighter clearances on the rest of the system without having to leave room for movement..and eliminates a lot of rattles once it's all installed and the car is a driver!

Re: Just about done with my brothers exhaust. What do you think?

We drove the car tonight!!!! It moved on its own for the first time in almost 6 years. I'll get a sound clip of the exahust sometime in the next few days but for a nearly stock motor, this thing sounds mean. We also painted the entire exhaust so nothing will rust.

Now I will admit we didnt drive it much. We moved it foward about 50 feet then backed it up another 30. We just needed to get it out of the garage and into the driveway. But it moved on its own power.

The one thing that bothers me about the exhaust (but I am not about to fix) is that everything tucks up real high except the X itself. I guess I didnt have it high enough up in the car when building it and it hangs down kinda low. He probably has about 4 inches or so of clearance. If it winds up being a huge deal then I'll fix it, but that means cutting up the entire front half of the exhaust.

Re: Just about done with my brothers exhaust. What do you think?

I figured I'd post some pics of the exhaust installed on the car. The lowest part of the exhaust is the flex tubing right before the X itself. Its only about 2.75" off the ground. I'm kinda worried about it over bumps, but we'll see what happens. It could go up an inch or so, but I'd have to cut apart almost everything to shift things around so thats not happening except for if he has tons of issues with it. The mufflers are 6" off the ground and I promise they do not touch the driveshaft or torque arm. They do however hit the floarboards but are mounted solid so hopefully there is not too much noise from them. At idle there is no noise from this. The tape measure in the pics is 3" tall.

I'd worry more about the heat from them setting the carpet on fire from the heat. Or at least heating it to the point of smoldering & smoking/stinking up the inside.

Re: Just about done with my brothers exhaust. What do you think?

Huh, did not think of that. I have some heat wrap that I may put between the exhaust and the floorboards. We just got done putting new carpet in and I do not want to pull all the interior back out again.
