Straight Pipe Help?

Hey everyone, new to the site. Just looking for a bit of help on my 1991 Camaro RS. Okay, so basically I have a bone stock 91 Camaro RS with a 305, and im looking for cheap solution for an exhaust. I want a mean sounding exhaust, but im looking for a few HP gains at the same time. What do yous think about straight pipes? What if i remove the CAT (I know people who could pass me for emmisions) and muffler and all, and just replace it with straight pipes? How would it sound? Will I see any gains? And what size piping should I use? Thanks a lot

Re: Straight Pipe Help?

On an RS, the whole exhaust system sucks from the manifolds to the tail pipe, its all way too small and restrictive. If you want a better sound, just get an aftermarket muffler or chop the stock muffler off. I'd leave the cat on or it will be way too loud.

If you want power, get L98 manifolds or shorty headers, a 3" high flow cat, and a 3" cat back.

I have a 91 Trans Am with the same exhaust you have, size and everything. I just have a flowmaster muffler on it and it sounds good.

aaahhh nice thats what im looking for ahah..ill probably just eventually get a performance cat to free up air flow a bit

how much could i possibly get out of the 305 engine? i know the RS isnt the fastest car but with some mods could i make some kind of improvements? i just want the most out of my car without shelling out too much money :P thanks alot people

Re: Straight Pipe Help?

you would be lucky if you can get 300hp in the 305,its not really a super all out motor like the 350.

Re: Straight Pipe Help?

What kind of sound are you looking for? With straight pipes it will probably be raspy at certain rpms.
