Exhaust real hot i mean hot
Ok heres my issue i started doing more bodywork this week went to start the car it will not idle i have to rev it up to 2 gees and keep it there as doing so i noticed a smell and the exhaust got really hot all the way down to tips does anyone know what would cause it
seems like the idle problem and exhaust problem have to be linked seeing as i started the car 3 weeks ago it was fine
someone said that there could be critters in the exhaust which will not let it idle ..

Re: Exhaust real hot i mean hot
if it aint idleing on its own, its probly too rich and hence why you need to give it more throttle (more air) to keep it running. Running rich and at 2000 rpms will quickly heat up the exhaust. Also, whats the engine timing? too much retard on timing and abit rich on fuel will heat up pipes ALOT

Possibly high backpressure. take off the exhaust, and check it for flow. Possibly do have some critter in there, and you were smelling... well... cooked critter?

Yeah, but you have to take the catalytic converter out. A bright light at one end should be visible from the other end. Or just run it with the front of the converter unhooked If your neighbors aren't to close.

If it all of the sudden started doing this then unplug the CTS near the thermostat
I recently had to repair a LO5 with super rich startup problems. Turns out when the CTS goes bad it either gives no signal or max signal of -70C or something very cold. The ECM compensates by adding fuel for this arctic air coming in. Since its not really arctic air it just drowns on all the extra fuel

Check your timing by loosening the distributor, and having a helper keep the car running from inside of the car, and adjust and slowly let off the throttle to have it idle. Also check for any vacuum leaks, that could cause a no-idle issue.

Cadillac is an AUTO MAKER, not an Emissions device, and having one on yer car sure as hell doest make it a cadillac.
the emissions device is called a CATALYTIC converter, because of the face that it is a Catalyst

Re: Exhaust real hot i mean hot
Check in the Tech/General engine section
Unhooked exhaust rules out the cat. To test the CTS unplug it and fire it up. Same problems means the CTS is not the culprit
If the timing is way off it can run lean and cause the exhaust to get VERY hot. Check with a timing light rather than attempting adjustments blindly. Be sure to disconnect the base timing connector near the HVAC box if you do reset the dist

4: installed new TPS sensor
5: Replaced the IAC
6: Set the timing as stated to 0 and brought it up by 2
