My new side exit exhaust
I decided for some dumb reason to cut off my old exhaust, 3" dynomax mandrel bent with magnaflow 3"in/3"out muffler. sounded good but was too quiet, i could here me engine more than my exhaust and i have the ford injectors and they tick loud so i don't wann hear that. In total i spent a little less than $150 dynomax bullet muffler 3" $40 i have used it a few times already, 3" mandrel j-bend $40, adaptors$15, 90deg 3" stainless tube. $25. and about $15 for the hangers. I first tried this without the muffler and it was to loud, open header loud. But i should have put a muffler on it in the first place because adding it afterwards hurt my ground clearance slightly. I'n total i have 4 1/4-4-1/2" of clearance at the lowest point. The bullet muffler didn't do alot but it make a differance. When warm at idle she sounds nice and tame but at highway speeds it's loud and at WOT it's rediculous loud.

Re: My new side exit exhaust
I should probably also state that i did feel a nice increase of power across the powerband, it use to bogg off the line sometimes stall, now it doesn't bogg or hesitate at all. But this new found hp could be a result of my imagination, cuz we all no that some modifications don't net you any additional hp. But i like the look of it and have had no issues with ground clearance yet, but i will stay away from speed bumps.
And ya i drive her in the winter, she is always dirty, i painted her 3yrs ago and it wasn't the best paint job, i don't have any money for new paint plus she needs some other body work done.

NICE, i love those wheels , and that colour looks great with that combo. Does your true dual setup exit only on the passenger side or do you have it exit both sides with dual tips.

Re: My new side exit exhaust
True dual? Or dual tips?
Sound clip? I have a Magnaflow bullet too, & can't decide if I wanna buy another one & do true dual side exit, or just turn my single out to the side, like yours is.
BTW....Love the Snypers!

Re: My new side exit exhaust
I'll try and get a so clip soon. i was gonna do true duals, but i already had the dynomax bullet and it's a 3". I was gonna go buy 2x2 1/2 cherry bombs but i wanted to keep the price down. Besides i have alot of 3" tubing kicking around that was free. If you go true duals i would do 2 1/2", 3" is way to big for anything under 600hp, and with 2 1/2" you would have awsome ground clearance. I may actually take this system off in a few months and built a 2 1/2" dual setup

Your exhaust looks great! I bet it sounds just as good as it looks! I drive my car every day and through every snow storm. You can't get away with a clean car in the northeast. Your exhaust is awesome though. One thing at a time.

Re: My new side exit exhaust
mine is a true dual, super comp long tubes and rest custom made with two spiral flow mufflers and then kicked out to the side, and it only comes out on the pass side...keeps the noise down on my side when i drive cuz its prety loud due to the motor i have....as you can see in the pic....kinda nascar inspired

Re: My new side exit exhaust
i wish someone would just go ahead and modify there floor pans and kick them out the sides threw the gfx with no sacrifice to ground clearance. If i had the money and time i would have already done it i dont use my back seats anyways.

I was planning on doing the EXACT same thing to my 87GTA, thanks for the pics!!! Do you have a cat still installed? Is it a nice smooth deep tone, or annoying crackling?

Re: My new side exit exhaust
I like side pipes, but none I've seen are long enough for 3rd gens, so they look like an afterthought & not designed for the car (because they are too short).
Find/Make some long enough to fit RIGHT & I think they could look good.

Re: My new side exit exhaust
Wow thats pretty loud, kinda raspy though. Do you have any mufflers at all? I might do something similar but use chambered powersticks before going out the side.

That really looks good! I think it is great you dared to do something different! can not wait to hear the sound bit.
I did something close on my vette however mine required a little cutting of the rear bumper lol

Re: My new side exit exhaust
thx forthe kudos guys, and yes the car has mufflers, if you look at the pics carefully you can see them, they are only half inch wider then the pipes, its the smallest ones i can find, spiral flow mufflers i beleive cant remember for sure....but its the smallest ones on the market....

Re: My new side exit exhaust
I thought about doing true dual 2 1/2" but they were about $50 each for the spiral flows and i already had the 3" stainless tubing, i had awsome clearance without the bullet muffler but it was too loud without it, i had to dent the floor pand flat in some spots for best clearance. I coluld have made it fit alot better but i had already welded up the entire exhaust so i had to do it this way, i stil havn't scraped it once, and hopefully never will. It sounds about the same as charged350's at WOT but at idle it's as quiet as stock setups.

Re: My new side exit exhaust
What does your car run in the 1/4, i'm hoping for 13.8, if not then i'm gonna be doing an LT1 intake conversion. I'm runnin a 305 with about 9.5:1 compression and stock heads and intake setup.

Re: My new side exit exhaust
What could you possibly have thats so secret to make or sound like that? lol! To me, it's way too raspy. That probably has to do with your mufflers or whatever those are. If I was to make something similar, I would use Powersticks or Stainless works chambered mufflers. I don't know about routing it down the center either. Maybe off to the side like the stock setup would then bending it out before going out the side.

Re: My new side exit exhaust
as of now, the car runs 12.4 with a 355 with 7.5:1 compression.....after the turbo.....were in single digits, but also after the turbo i have to get rid of this exhaust.....all 4 inch flat pipe exiting in the same spot hopefully.

Re: My new side exit exhaust
I would like a sound clip of the roiginal posters exhaust.
electric cut outs are on way for me, I miss running open headers for the 3 days till i got my exhaust welded, perfect for highway cruisining... just a mellow tone,
charged, your car isn't as loud as it could be, haha, did you use a glass pack style, and run them backwards or pour water in them? or is it just like a sound resonator not a muffler?

I gotta wait awhile for some warmer weather. here in Alberta weather sucks sometimes +15C NEXT DAY IT'S -10C and i only have a cell to take a video with.
Yes i only have a single pipe on the passenger side. with my sub frame connectors it would hang down way to low on the drivers side, with this setup i can still use my flowtech y-pipe. If i didn't have frame connectors period i would have little to no ground clearance loss, it would tuck up real nice against the floor pan. I did have to bend and flatten some parts of the floor boards to get optimal clearance.

Love the side exit, toyed with the idea for a while myself. I like the smooth tone that my X-pipe gives. The crackly sound does kinda have a pro-stock sound to it though, no doubt that car is tough.
