Cat converter heat sheild

i had to remove the catalitic converter heat shield a few years a go when i installed my SFC, alstons. I just recently built a new exhaust and just finished fitting a set of custom dual 3" cats, i havent run cats for a few years, got tired of the smell. I started the car up tonight and the floor is getting so hot over the cats that the undercoating is melting/smoking and the carpet is getting a bit warmer than i would like it to be. I actually had the car fill with smoke from the undercoating coming up through the shifter boot.

So my question is simple, i can just make a shield of of sheet metal right? it doesn't have to be a special material or have a special coating? Just bend and formed to the floor leaving a small air gap between it and the floor? about 1/2" or so?

any input?

thanks
-Phil

Re: Cat converter heat sheild

Sounds like the engine is lean and that's getting the cats too hot.

But yes you can make any kind of metal heat shield you want. You might also need some dynamat under the passenger side carpet.

I have the shield off of Berlinetta #2 that I won't be using. It's in good shape.

hmmm, hadn't thought of that, the carb was tuned with the engine when it was built, so i dont think the carb could be the issue. I did however, just install a new fuel system and im having erratic pressure issues, maybe thats causing it if it is in fact lean?

Would the possible lean condition only cause the cats to overheat? or all the exhaust? because without the cats i never had a heat issue like this.

The erratic pressure issues will definitely affect it.

Installing the cats possibly changed the fuel and timing the engine wants. But I'd say fix the pressure issue first and see.

The cats are more sensitive to fuel issues than the exhaust pipes are. You'll see the cats glowing red before the headers will.
