hooker header questions

I`m about to install a set of 2460 ceramic coated headers that will replace the flowtech headers and y-pipe I`ve been running.I will of coarse need a custom y-pipe.With a properly built y pipe do yall think I`ll notice a differance in power or get better e/t or speed?
Why is it everyone runs the y-pipe to the passenger side similar to the stock exhaust.I realize its probably for ground clearance, but would there be any benifit to try something like the LT`s use comeing straight back off the headers and y into a single pipe behind the trans?Any better flow with shorties run like that?Seems a little easier to run but would probably loose some clearance?
Next question is.Why does everyone recommend the 2055`s over the 2460`s?Other than I`ve read the 2055 has a thicker gauge material which may be restrictive, but isnt 1 5/8 1 5/8 regardless of the gauge of the material its made out of?I know the 2055 comes with a y-pipe that I`ve also read has issues that can be resolved with a little work, but as far as header to header is there really a differance?

Re: hooker header questions

I don't have 2055's, but from what I've read the Y-pipe on them is actually quite good. As for going straight back and then going into a Y behind the transmission, I don't think there is room for a catalytic converter underneath there. Plus pretty much every catback system goes to where the stock cat ends. You'd need to build a new intermediate pipe to hook up to the muffler.

Then there is the fact that the cost of getting a Y-pipe made and the risk of how good will it turn out is not worth it. The 2055 gives you a guaranteed good fit and it just about always cheaper than the 2460 + custom Y pipe.

Re: hooker header questions

Well that makes more sense.I sometimes forget about people having to run a cat.Seeing as I paid 50 bucks for mine I should come out ok with a custom built y.I have a buddy from way back who owns and his family has owned an exhaust shop since I can remember.I told him exactly what I wanted and will be there to stop ant BS him or his employees might try.The LT style 2 into 1 behind the trans looked a little easier than all the turns that it would take to run where the stock setup with cat would be.

The 2460 are made from a heavier gage than the 2055's. Since the tube diameter is OD, a heavier gage tube will have a smaller ID than a thinner gage.

There is a y-pipe from Hooker for 2460's, but it's only 2-1/2" after the two sides join, and is intended to replace the cat on off-road application LO3's (what are the chances of an off-road LO3?). Buying the y-pipe and having it modified for a 3" "Y" will cost you more than just getting 2055's from the get-go.

Re: hooker header questions

This is what I got from the guy for like 55 bucks.I thought it was a pretty good deal.I`m trying to get a guy who is selling his y pipe for the 2460 to seperate it from the rest of the catback he is selling. He doesnt want to do it yet.If he will It shouldnt be that expensive to mate it to the flowmaster y that will run into my 3" I pipe.At any rateMy friend at the exhaust shop said he could build me one for about 150 using all mandrell bent pipes. We may use a good bit of the driver side tube from the flowtech y if it looks like we can make it work since it`s 2.5 to the "highflow tubular cat".Stick that flowmaster y in and fab up the tube from the passenger side to the flowmaster y.
Damn I forgot about the od measuring.Whos Idea was that.Rather misleading, but my fault for not remembering.I will just be happy to get rid of the flowtechs and hopefully I`ll notice a differance at least when I go with the magnaflow muffler.

Re: hooker header questions

I just looked up the 2055 ceramic headers.Even though my y pipe will not be ceramic coated I will not come anywhere near paying over 800 bucks for my set up.The thicker gage of my 2460`smay give me alttle less performance than the 2055`s but with the differance in price I`ll be ok untill I think I need LT`s or come across a good deal.IIRC the 2460`s will support more power than I`m making. For 800 somthing bucks I could buy a whole aftermarket intake setup for my car.The non ceramic coated is almost 500 bucks. All thats out of my price range for now.
