hooker shorties and flowmaster cat back

I'm getting ready to buy a set of hooker shorties, 2460hkr, and I was going to go with the american thunder cat back, flo-17228. Will the "y" pipe that comes with the flowmaster system work with the hookers? or do I still need to buy the hooker "y" pipe?

The y pipe on the "SLO"masters is for duel cats. You will have to get a custom pipe made for the headers.

I try to stay away from mixing and matching--usually turns into modding, which turns into more expenditure/annoyance than if you'd purchased a matching system. You might consider the following direct-fit system:

The Hooker 2055's (Jeg's 520-2055). Catco high-flow converter (Summit CTO-9118). Hooker catback (Summit HOK-16823HKR).

If you have a y-pipe that's designed for a stock cat location, and a catback that's designed for a stock cat location... the only problem you'll run into is fitting the cat on there... And if the cat is a stock replacement direct fit cat, there should be no problem.

Essentially that's the case for the "direct-fit" system I suggested--it's simply significantly better than OE.

But the flowmaster sounds 100x better.

Thats a matter of opinion only, i happen to disagree, especially when it comes to the hooker system.

Yeah, I've had Flowmaster 80 series mufflers on two camaros now... and they sounded pretty mean... But, I started listening to clips around the net and Flowmasters just sond more hallow and metallic to me. The Hooker sounds more like a well oiled machine and more refined. I'll be installing that hooker catback (HOK-16823HKR) on my '87 tomorrow in fact.

Yeah, the hooker sounds too refined. Like, camaros and firebirds are made to sound rough and rowdy and raise hell, like the people that drive them. If you want that refined "purr" then I would buy a vette or something.

Re: hooker shorties and flowmaster cat back

Wow, thanks for the quick response guys. The hooker 2055 rout is a lot more expensive, plus the guy who had the car before me pulled out the a.i.r. system and plugged the stock manifolds. Could I use that combo but with the cheap hooker shorties and the hookey "y" pipe off summit?

Yet again, a matter of opinion only.

The hooker doesn't exactly purr, it does however muffle the engine(isn't that what a muffler is supposed to do) unlike a flowmaster, which from my experience actually makes the exhaust note louder at idle and i think many would agree.
