Looking for exhaust shop around mid LI

I live in Selden, NY. Anyone know of a reliable shop in the area I can go to to have duals installed on my '83 Z28 (305, 5spd)?

Also, being the car is now 25yrs. old, it had it's last emissions check last year. As a result, with the new exhaust system I'd like to remove the cats. Is this a good move?

Thanks!

Re: Looking for exhaust shop around mid LI

why would you want duals on a 305?? Unless your going to drop a bigger engine in, or do one heck of a 305 build, the duals is a waste of time and money

Re: Looking for exhaust shop around mid LI

Thanks for the advice. I've put a bigger cam in, new manifold and rebuilt the QJet. What exhaust setup would you recommend if I wanted to get a deeper tone?

Thanks!

The HOOKER cat-back with the AEROCHAMBER will give a good sound without the drone of the blowmaster.
Just look around at all the manufacturer websites and find the sound you want then order the 3" cat back with that muff. All the major manufactuers offer a cat-back for our cars--just find the sound you like and spent a lil cash

Re: Looking for exhaust shop around mid LI

I am running a 3 inch cat, with a cut-out on the strips and has a nice deep rumble, without the hassles of a true dual and clearance issues

True duals does not magically equal better than a properly sized single. Although one would not glean that from the million "I want to put a dual exhaust on my car" posts in this section. Single 3'er will be more than what you need.

Re: Looking for exhaust shop around mid LI

Thanks for all of the responses. They've helped a lot (and saved me some $ too!). I picked up this car last year and I'm trying to do most of the work myself. Spent lots of time reading / researching what's best.

At the risk of giving away the fact that I'm still fairly new to this, can someone tell me what's meant by "cat-back"?

Thanks!

A system that is bolt-in from the "CAT"alytic converter to the back of the car.

Re: Looking for exhaust shop around mid LI

Well, being the car is now 25 yrs old, in NY a yearly emissions test is no longer required. I'm thinking of taking the CAT off. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks!

Well, you can run whatever cat you want or no cat... that's your option. I'd say if it's gonna be a DD, keep the cat on (just for the environment's sake)... a weekend cruiser, sure just run a test pipe. There will be basically no performance gain between high flow cat and test pipe... just gonna make the car sound a little less refined and change the smell of the exhaust a little.

You may have trouble getting a shop to do it for you though since it is still illegal to remove the cat (they just don't inspect for it). The nice thing about cars of that age is that there is no charge for the emission test at all, so it's like $10 to get inspected.

if you feel like driving into Huntington, there's a Meineke on Jericho in Huntington that does pretty good work and he won't rip you off. the guy's name is Larry and i've gotten work done from him on several different cars and i have no complaints.

Re: Looking for exhaust shop around mid LI

Thanks for the info punkdude. This helps a lot.

How does the Thrush Glasspack sound? I'm looking for something with a deep tone.

Thanks!

Re: Looking for exhaust shop around mid LI

the Thrush glaspack sounds nice- it doesn't sound like a typical glasspack with that nasty tractor tone to it. it has a nice idle and isn't too loud but has a nice sound under acceleration. i'm pretty happy with it.

here's a vid i posted in another thread:

Re: Looking for exhaust shop around mid LI

Just stopped by the local muffler shop for an estimate on a new exhaust system from headers back. Guy quoted me $550 using 2.5 in pipe (not mandrel bent) with a Flowmaster 40 & chrome tips (single pipe back to muffler, duals out).

Sounds kind of high, am I getting ripped off?

Thanks!
