true duals in Virginia

I also posted this in the regional board but i know not alot of ppl look at that part of the site. I asked a muffler shop here in stafford va and one in richmond va if they could run true duals for me. They said they couldnt bc it didnt come with dual cats. AHA! My fireturd DID come with the dual cat option and they are saying they still cant do it bc of federal law saying no f body came with dual cats. Now i found one exhaust shop that might be able to do it. I will be running dual cats (aftermarket of course) with hedman LT's and possibly hooker areochamber mufflers (that biatch is gonna be LOUD).

Now my question.......i am hoping a mechanic can explain this to me. Is it possible to run duals on my legally? I can provide vin #'s to validate my car with factory dual cats.

VIN doesn't help, because it doesn't say whether or not you've got dual cats. If your car came from the factory with the 350, it could be either single or dual cat. It was an option package, and if their information doesn't include dual cats for '89, their information is incomplete.

One issue you do need to address is the letter of the regulation (I won't call it "law", because the EPA doesn't make laws) which states that the cats need to be in the factory location. Doing that with long tube headers is a real pain, and hurts flow. Just putting them where convenient with long tubes doesn't cut it.

Now, if you get the Hedman emissions-legal shorties for dual cats, you're home free. They go in the stock location, and anything you do after the cats is only subject to state safety regulations, not federal emissions regulation.

Unless you do shorties with a pipe to each cat, then a pipe from each cat out the back.
