Headers Hurting Performance?

Hi, I have a 91 camaro rs, and my friend went out and bought an 83 camaro. When i was talking to him, his dad said that Headers hurt a camaro's performance because everything already on it is fine. now, judging from what i already know about headers, and different modifications, I want to say this is bologna. I have headers on my camaro, with true dual exhaust, and his car is bone stock.

so am i really making less power with my better-flowing headers than he is with his stock Exhaust Manifolds? also, i know my car makes a little more horses than his, but im just talkin about the exhaust. any and all input is greaty appreciated. thanks.

Matt

That is 100% wrong. Go show him a log exhaust manifold from a thirdgen camaro, and then put a header next to it, and tell him to tell you the same thing.

I also gained 2mph in the 1/4 by getting a set of hooker 2055 headers / 3" Y pipe.

He is wrong. You will hear many people say that headers hurt performance but they do not understand their function correctly. Tell him to run a mile breathing through a paper towel tube and then tell him to run the same distance breathing through a soda straw. Which will allow him to produce more power?

The most common misunderstanding of headers can be summed up by application and quality. Poor quality headers will likely leak and selecting the wrong size headers (like putting 1 7/8" long tubes on a 283) can result in less than ideal performance. These two factors typical deter the majority of people who don't understand basic performance upgrades.

Youd be surprised. Someone was telling me today that a mechcanic told me his upper valve cover was leaking. I told him to tell him that its probally the lower valve cover gasket!

But either way, hes wrong.

1.I just don't understand why you want to go faster?
2.Why would you want a loud exhuast?
3.You could be saving that money to buy a new car.
4.That cars not worth that much.

AND MY ANSWER IS:
Why don't you take a ride with me?

idk if i agree id rather run sum good manifolds then headers . but besidestha i had the center dump manifolds on my 350 57' belair and full exhuast and those classic 50s sound mufflers from flowmaster . after removing it for hookers and sum purple hornies glasspacks i think power decreased . altho it sure as hell did sound wicked! but at crusing speeds it had the wrose droneing sound inside it was obnoxious .

it all depends on what u buy i think putting headers on my car hurt perfoemance , i bought the flowtech headers with the y pipe and they have to flow better than the stock manifolds atleast i thought but i think i lost 15-20 hp by puting them on they sound great not to loud i havn't had to replace the header gaskets yet but i did the collector gaskets i'm not sure how i lost power by using headers but if u buy the good 1's u will gain hp.

I would say this, that every single race car in exsistence have a custom made exhaust. Whether it's straight open shorties on a John Force dragster or tuned mid and long tube headers on Nascar and the same goes for Indy and F1. It is well established that tuned headers complete the package. The mistake many make is in going to a system that is too large for the output of their mtr. A stock or even mildly warm 350 will be fine up to 2" duals. Any bigger pipe than that and performance will drop off. Only full race engines truly benefit from a wide open no restriction pipes. Because they run wide open all the time. Street cars need a bit of backpressure just so they can be tuned right. A perfect example is the 3" single on the 350. 1 7/8 per side into a 3' pipe split in 2 again at the back. With a cam and a bit more fuel/air volume the 2" system then offers a benefit. I'm changing out my cast units for Hookers as soon as the weather breaks. Just looking at them tells you that they flow gas better. But I am leaving the rest of the system stock. My car is not a all out racer and the $ spent on a full mandrel bent will never realize the tiny bit of power gained. Joe btw a 3" pipe is a 3" pipe all day long.
